Eggplant florentine
Don K.

It's hard to beat the ambiance of dining in an old home. The pressure is on the chef to provide dishes that draw on that feeling of a home cooked meal and wait staff who give that attention of being served by a family member or friend. Here, reservations are necessary as much for the limited seating as they are for the food quality. (While there is an outdoor dining area, it didn't look like it was well-maintained or the owner's priority. Outdoor seating wasn't available on our visit). Our server was pleasant and thankfully referred to my wife and I as "friends" , rather than the lazy and boorish "you guys" you hear in so many places. She promptly provided water and offered us an impressive wine selection. I ordered a glass of Crios Malbec ($10) which paired well with my entree, the eggplant florentine ($21). Service started with a complimentary warm and simple mini loaf of Italian bread. Soft and light , it absorbed the EVOO dipping sauce of flavorful spices and herbs. With a choice of salad or soup of the day (potato and chive soup), we both opted for salads. They were lightly dressed with a creamy balsamic and a hint of garlic. The eye-pleasing chilled salad was a spring mix with red onion, cucumbers and tomatoes. Not one of those after thought salads served at some restaurants. We also ordered a shareable plate of two sauced meatballs ($17) served with a side of velvety smooth ricotta piped onto an oversized leaf of basil. The garlic bread points were so-so but the meatballs were very tasty. A good choice. The eggplant on my dish wrapped around a generous serving of spinach and cheese and slathered with a delicious marinara. My wife enjoyed her chicken parmigiana ($22) and was surprised to find two thinly cut and breaded tender cutlets covered in the red sauce. Enough to carry home some leftovers. We passed on the three desserts offered. Our dining experience ended with two complimentary shot glasses of creamy limoncello. An excellent send off.....

The food was excellent and the service was thoughtful. However, the atmosphere was very bright which distracted from the dining experience

Warned I would have…read moreto get there early, (before 8 am) or they'd be sold out, with high expectations, I decided to take the plunge. And so, I set my alarm to begin my donut mission. At 6:30 am I showed up at the door of Jupiter Donuts awaiting my pot of gold. Or in this case my donut nirvana! I'll be the first to admit, I'm not looking for what some consider the ideal donut. You know the ones that have a multitude of weird toppings. I'm driven more by the texture and taste of the cake. Thin airy Boston creams with little filling, glazed donuts that are too sweet and have no substance are all too commonplace for my liking. Having said all that, you won't find any of that at Jupiter Donuts. However, in order to be the "best", it has to stand out from all others and this is where Jupiter Donuts doesn't quite make the grade. I mixed up my choices to assure a good representation choosing a frosted chocolate cake, a Boston cream, a chocolate frosted glazed and a sour cream. I guess because of all the advance kudos, my expectations were probably not realistic. And perhaps no place could live up to the high praise and subsequent anticipation I had. Unfortunately, although their donuts were good, I most assuredly wouldn't get up at 6am or wait in line for one. On an individual note, the best was the Boston cream with plenty of filling and a firm (not airy) cake. I'd have to say, I enjoyed this donut the most. I'd give it a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. My favorite donut is usually a frosted chocolate cake. Jupiters was good but definitely not the best I've had. Score it a 7. The sour cream as well as the chocolate frosted were average at best with both coming in at a 6. All were good but none were great. I must admit, I'm spoiled by the fresh-from-the-oven old fashioned donuts I enjoyed as a child at a place called Tices Farm. The smell and taste of those donuts still resonates with me after all these years. Perhaps those memories assure no donut place will ever live up to my initial donut experience. But my search will go one for that one donut in a million.

The BLT on a croissant? Buttery, flaky croissant, thick smoky bacon, fat juicy tomato slices - typically I wouid never order a BLT on a croissant, but I went with Carol's (the manager) recommendation and it slapped! Hard. 11/10 My wife ordered the Dubai chocolate croissant and let's just say: it flexed harder than Schwarzenegger in his prime. Layers so airy they almost levitate. Smooth dark chocolate and pistachio. It's sweeeeet. If you like dubai chocolate style creations - this is otherworldly. I asked my wife what score she gives it. She didn't skip a beat. "Numbers are insufficient for that masterpiece." There ya have it! We swing by when we can for their sourdough loaf which are always 10/10. A huge shoutout to Carol, the manager. She's not just helpful - she's encyclopedic. Ask her what's in a pastry, what's not, what pairs best with coffee - she'll walk you through like your own pastry tour guide, always kind, always thorough. It's tiny, yes - you'll eat outside, in your car, or at home. But trust me, when the food hits this level, location doesn't matter. Sucre is a heavyweight champ hiding in a shoebox. Clutch move: they regularly discount the pastries around 2 or 3 until close to BOGO. Enjoy!
