Really nice place to stop into if you're in Benson. We came here on a Sunday for lunch (note: many places in Wilcox closed) and plenty of people eating. I had a bowl of their deluxe tortilla soup and loved it! I decided against adding chicken but still the soup was so filling and warming. Very fresh vegetables and lots of avocados too. I'd definitely get this again. My friend had a chicken mole plate and said it wad good but did wish the rice wasn't overcooked but then commented that this seems typical. I ate here years ago and enjoyed the experience. I stopped in again two days ago, a Wednesday late afternoon, after a hike nearby. It wasn't yet crowded and was waited on right away. I ordered chicken mole enchiladas for $16.99 which came out quickly. The mole was delicious but the portion was small. It came with no sides. When the bill arrived, I was surprised it was more than advertised, with an additional .68 service fee that brought the bill over $19 plus tip. read more

We pulled in to a small town named Benson on the road back to Tucson to grab a very late lunch. We Yelped this spot and it did not disappoint. Husband had the birria (soup) with beef which reminded us of a Mexican equivalent of a Korean yukkae jang (spicy shredded beef soup). I ordered the vegetable tortilla soup with a sprinkling of queso and coriander which hit the spot. It was refreshing, satisfying and not heavy. The usual nachos and picante was a reasonable amount for two people. We stopped at Magaly's while visiting Benson. There was three of us, older ladies. I ordered the chicken tacos (3), another ordered the chicken burrito and one ordered a cheese crisp. We had waited for about 15 minutes for our order to be taken, even though it was near 3:00 PM and not really busy. The chips and salsa came first, the mild tasted like ketchup, the spicy more like spaghetti sauce and was bland. The chips were hard, mostly broken little bits. The cheese crisp came a good 10 minutes before the other two meals even though it was ordered as an entree. The burrito and tacos arrived on stoneware plates that were so HOT the food was still cooking and smoking. Like fajitas but much hotter. The tacos were on a stand and the shells were so soggy the meat fell out then cooked on the plate. The cheese was burned on the plate. The burrito was too hot to pick up. The plates were still hot when we finished and left. We didn't understand why they were served so hot as it is dangerous so we asked the waitress. She agreed and said we should see the burns under her oven mitts. The chicken was very watery and over salted but otherwise very bland. The waitress was over worked and frantic so not real friendly. Food: Hummmm! Where do I start? Bean and rice were good. Cheese quesadilla was good. Bean tostada Senior plate was not good. We stopped for linner (3pm) on a Saturday. No wait, not crowded, but busy. We were greeted quickly, had our drinks, chips and salsa and ordered efficiently. The salsa was not hot but it was spicy (good). Chips were fresh and crisp. We both ordered #17: beef taco, chicken enchilada, rice and beans. The taco shell was thin, the thinnest I have ever had and absolutely perfect. The flavor is not what Georgia thinks a taco should be but we loved the subtle difference. The enchilada was less amazing but still good. Everything was hot and fresh. Walls, tables and benches were all 1950's style. Real silverware, but plastic glasses. Not loud but noisy. What you want Mexican food to be. 3 salsas that were home made, all 3 delicious. The chips were fresh and definitely not from a package. We both had combo plates. My husband chose chili rellenos and shredded beef taco. The rellenos was crispy where it peaked through the sauce. I had enchilada and beef taco. What a surprise! The sauce on enchilada was not you typical red sauce. This was more like a mole. Scrumptious. The beef taco was crispy with soft, juicy, flavorful shredded beef. I even ate my beans. We are newly relocated to Benson Arizona and we tried Magaly's and we were completely impressed. Loved the decor, lots of Macaws and since we have a Blue and Gold Macaw so we loved it. In my opinion, the interior could use an update, the staff could have been a little friendlier, and the food? meh... I ordered two shredded beef tacos. The shells were hard shell corn that tasted and looked like Walmart (wish I had taken pictures). The rice and beans seemed microwaved. The beans kind of flattened out on the plate, looking sad. Absolutely the worst service I've ever experienced in a Mexican restaurant. After being made to wait a half an hour to be seated despite the fact that they had nine open tables, we were finally seated. First, chips and watery salsa were delivered. Our order was taken, my wife ordered the nachos, I ordered an entree. My food came first. By the time I was almost done with my meal did my wife's nachos finally come (now soggy).
