First time visiting this small, friendly Mexican restaurant. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The restaurant has a decent menu which had a nice selection of seafood dishes and also included Menudo and Molcajete. There is no liquor served but they have beers, micheladas and sodas and juices. I give this place 5 stars because it's above average Mexican food which I surprisingly can never say about Mexican food here in Vegas. My only tip is bring your own reusable water bottle. The area is sketchy but I knew that going in and just took it for what it was. The service was great - they helped us right away and gave us suggestions on what to order. I saw reviews about the decor being tacky but I thought it made sense for the type of restaurant it was. I enjoyed it and found it cheerful. If you take a close look, the art hung throughout the restaurant is actually breathtaking. Now for the food - I have a thing for fish tacos and these did it for me!! They were battered perfectly, had a great flavor and the sauce was tasty. The only thing I'd do differently is order more sauce next time. I WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK FOR THE FISH TACOS! My partner ordered the fajitas and to be honest, fajitas are always a let down for me. All I can usually taste at most restaurants is that charred taste and nothing more. These were so flavorful and every bite was satisfying - I didn't even need to pair it with rice, beans, or a tortilla. I would definitely order this again. The only thing I didn't love was the water situation. I personally hate using plastic water bottles because it's so wasteful and terrible for the environment AND can be easily avoided. Unfortunately, they served water this way here and charged $3 per bottle, which we were not told when we ordered. This was disappointing but next time I just won't order water. I almost always carry a reusable one with me so it won't be a problem. All in all, this restaurant has great prices, is above average in taste and the service was great. After the Las Vegas Lights soccer match, I came here for dinner. I had this place bookmarked for some time and it was close to Cashman Field where the game was played. I knew about where the place was and had no trouble going right there. If you're unsure, open the maps app through Yelp and let the GPS guide you. It's on Fremont Street just past Charleston. Parking is on the west side of the building and the entrance is in the middle of the small space. I entered and waited for a while. The woman came from the kitchen, got a menu, and told me to sit anywhere I wanted. She followed me and gave me the menu when I sat down. I ordered the carne a la tampiqueña which the menu describes as: tampiqueña meat, served with rice, beans, cheese enchilada, and guacamole. The woman also noted I wanted iced tea and she brought me a large glass. She refilled it once and asked later if I wanted more. The dinner was good--hearty food with beans, rice and I ate three tortillas with the meal. It was as I was putting some meat in a tortilla that I noted they had forgotten the guacamole. Oh well, too late as I was almost done. Another time. I was not asked about dessert and I saw no dessert listing on the menu but I really didn't look for any. I was full at that point. Service was quick and pleasant. I don't know how the restaurant got its name but I won't be absent in the future. read more

I had my celebration of christening for infant son at this restaurant. All mexican restaurants i slways order enchilada and by far El Ausente is the best. When you have your first bite you know everything is fresh and not premade. All of my guests love their food and there were 12 of us in the restaurant with me. I cannot tell you how much we love this joint. My brother and dad did recon first... I'm just disappointed I wasn't with them. Yes its a little old building. Old and dated. But this has nothing on the cleaniness, quality and service. Because the food is top notch!! This is our second time 2 weeks in a row coming here. Won't be out last, definitely our new fave. This place doesn't look like much from the outside, but on the inside it has a cute diner feel to it. The staff is pleasant. They have 2 TVs on opposite sides of the room tuned to the same Spanish show. They also have a jukebox and occasionally play music. They have a nice variety of meals to choose from including meals designed for 2. They have horchatas (no refills- waitress gave me a look when I asked for no ice- I hate paying for a glass half full of ice), which in my opinion every Mexican restaurant should offer- I love cinnamon :) They also have some really big margaritas. Bf loves the different types of salted rims they have- he gets Modelo with a spicy rimmed glass. This was our second time. Both times he ordered green chilaquiles, and he says they're good, score 8/10. Last time I ordered the chicken burrito- very good. This time I tried to order chicken tamales, but all they had was pork. So I got the chicken enchiladas plate. I usually like enchiladas, but I don't usually rhapsodize about them. However, these were so good that I actually cleaned my plate! Terrible and earie experience. Friday night about 8 I walk in..was asked to sit down anywhere, it was pretty much empty. But before I came in I could see a man in the dark dressed in black with a gun holster and then I saw a gun? Well turned out it was a security officer? Weird, and not good. Then what I ordered is easily pretty delicious anywhere in Vegas, a chicken quesadilla? But from the first bite I could taste an old greese taste..OK yukk! I was so hungry from driving around looking for where to eat..Then half way thru the meal, I had to pick the large clumps of chicken out on top of that it had almost no cheese? ..It was torturous! Then I gladly left finally..and all I could smell was from the smoke emitting from the kitchen were of the permiating old greese on the way to.my car! Ohh..never again! The waitress was pretty nice.
