I've visited El Azteca several times over the past few years. Every time the service is super friendly, the atmosphere in fun, friendly and inviting and the food is solid. I LOVE their mucho nachos, Soooo good! The beans and cheese just melt off of every chip (Mmmm just thinking of it makes me want to jump in the car and head over there now!) As for the main course I've had several dishes - vegi burrito, shrimp burrito, crab and shrimp enchiladas, quesodillas.. All were outstanding. Every time I'm at El Azteca I Need to have a margarita and their margs are HUGE and delish! Don't pass them over! Also their desert flan is spot on! I've been coming to El Azteca for years, as it is one of the few non-chain restaurants in the Clarksville area. In addition, they serve up Mexican food, which is my absolute favorite. Prices are very reasonable, and I've never experienced anything less than great service. On my most recent visit, I had the steak tacos, which were absolutely delicious. The steak was cooked just how I liked it, and they were topped with cheese, lettuce, and guacamole. The tacos are served with refried beans and rice. In addition, they always bring out fresh chips and salsa right after you sit down, but only the first round is complimentary. The restaurant is pretty small, and almost always crowded. I got there right at 5 on Friday, and was able to get a table no problem, but by 6:30 when I left there was a long wait. I would definitely make a reservation if you can. Things were good to the bill came and then we were missed charged, misquoted and very rudely approached about the whole thing . The manager was no help whatsoever I would not recommend this place , if you do choose to go however I would strongly recommend that you make sure to check your bill They overcharged us by about $45 and would not correct the mistake. read more

You wouldn't expect how good this restaurant is from the outside. The food here was pretty solid and service was quick. The menu is fairly big with a good amount of options. Definitely not than many healthy options if you're on a diet though! For appetizer we got the ceviche which is a mix of different seafood in a glass filled with lime juice. For entree I ordered the azteca chimichanga with beef. It came topped with sour cream and lettuce, and with beans and rice on the side. Cleaned my plate it was so delicious! If you are trying to get your Mexican food fix this place is pretty good. The service is great and the staff are very friendly. I only wish the portion sizes were a little bit bigger especially the sides of rice and beans. If you eat in you get only 1 free chips & salsa, the rest you have to order and pay for. I have to say I am spoiled with all the other Mexican restaurants I have gone that give you an endless bowl of chips. How much can they really be losing with free chips & salsa. Their menu prices are higher compared to other Mexican restaurants around the area and I believe I have tried almost all. I ordered carry out a few days back and asked for an extra tortilla. I got one small one and was charged 45 cents, really. For that price they could have least put a large one like the Mexican chain we all know. Went here one night and got amazing drinks and food. Chips were so good and so was the salsa. It was later around 8pm... they still served us and were super attentive. The swirl margarita was fantastic. We each got two. Our waitress was so sweet and i loved the atmosphere in the place. Will definitely return when I'm in Clarksville again! read more

Just had the best fish tacos I've ever had in my life (and I'm from the southwest)! I don't know what kind of fish it was but it was nice big pieces of actual fish, not the little pre-formed things that you frequently get, cooked to perfection in a nice soft flour taco. Does MD have any decent Mexican food? I'm about to find out. Since being in MD and when I lived here previously I found that good Mexican food was almost unheard of in this area. A few people have recommended El Azteca with the caveat "It's not what your'e used to in California" I'd have to agree with that. I'm giving El Azteca a solid 3-ish. Okay, especially since there's basically no other Mexican food around. I don't think these guys would do very well in Southern California, but we're not in So Cal are we. First the good. The margaritas were cheap and VERY strong! The servers were super nice, albeit a bit slow for my taste. We were seated quickly despite the place being packed (always a bonus when you show up hungry on a Friday night). It was also very munchkin friendly. Now, the not so good. The food was just okay. The munchkins had enchiladas and burritos and seemed to be okay with them. The SO had soft tacos. Unfortunately, the beef in the tacos was ground beef. I don't mean to be a jerk here, but I took a bit and I would rather have had taco bell. I say that with no hyperbole. I had an enchilada with all the trimmings. It was okay. Basically okay, but the cheese was a little off. Let's be clear. This place is far and away the best Mexican food we've had....in Maryland. Okay had to review this one, because far too many people are commenting on how this is the best Mexican food ever. Let's be real they make a good quesadilla, the tacos are ok, the fajitas are mehh, the chicken enchilada was gross despite the waiter selling me on it. The margaritas are just ok, however they are not made to order they sit around in some vat of sugary sour mix for hours. The staff is decent I suppose even though they will push you to get a $10 three fruit juice margarita concoction with probably one shot of tequila. Honestly, go to Route 40, Laurel, or if you're feeling adventurous head into Baltimore city to get some real Mexican food. As a lifelong Clarksville/Highland resident, I'm a huge fan of El Azteca. I always recommend dining in with a group of friends and enjoying chips and salsa, margaritas and an entree, but carry out is a good option too. Their carry out is usually extremely speedy and a good alternative if the restaurant has a long wait. I'm a fan of everything on the menu- the grilled fish tacos are great, the enchilladas blancas are gooey cheesey goodness (try with the verde sauce!), taco salad, so much more. My father has gotten the chicken burrito grande before and the chicken mole and enjoyed those. There are so many menu options, you will definitely find something you like. Parking is annoying and scarce- be sure not to park in the 15 minute parking for the liquor store next door. read more

I grew up in Southern California and I spent three years in San Antonio, Texas. I still have not been wow'd by the Mexican food in Maryland. That being said, El Azteca is just as good as a a couple of other Mexican restaurants in the area. It'll hit the spot if you're craving Mexican and want to have a sit down meal. Love love love love this place! I tend to stop here on the way to Linganore Winery or on the way home from the winery, either way I stop here no matter what. My Mother and I just LOVE this place! Did I mention that I love this place? I have to agree with previous reviewers which stated that you can tell if the food at a Mexican restaurant is going to be amazing or nasty based solely on their salsa and chips. This place has some of the best salsa around--crisp, fresh and smells amazing! The décor of the bar is very Tex-Mex styled and the bathrooms are super clean (always a good note to make--shows that they care). When I come here my Mother always orders a California Burrito and I order some sort of Enchilada Special Dish. We NEVER finish all of our food since the food to plate ratio is amazing! Therefore, Dad always has a snack when we get home--he also loves this place but has actually never been there (lol). The most delicious item on the entire menu is their coconut margarita. *3.5 stars I haven't been here in agessss. So today, a few friends and I met for lunch (a slightly more authentic choice than the usual Chipotle). I didn't try my friends' food, but they both said it was delicious (California burrito and crab/shrimp chimichanga). I ordered ceviche and a cup of El Azteca chili. The ceviche was definitely not the best I've had--and I think improperly made because it did not seemed to actually be made with raw seafood. Bleh. BUT the El Azteca chili was TO DIE FOR. Seriously, I haven't had such good chili ever. There was ground beef as well as nice chunks of beef (brisket I think), paired with cornbread--which by the way was wayyyyyy to small (though delicious) The fried ice cream was also really good. It had an interesting crust of shredded coconut and cornflakes. I happen to be a huge fan of coconut, so I loved it. This is my second time here. The first time I ordered a salad and it was lettuce with a small amount of meet on top with nothing else. The service was okay but not great. The second time I went as a group of six. The food was good but the service was terrible. I asked to have the check split in two and the waitress rolled her eyes and said she already had it as one check. She did split the check giving herself an 18% tip and both checks when she didn't even have to refill anyone's water she set a pitcher on the table and we did it ourselves. She also asked my son twice if he would like a horchata refill not telling us the refills are not free. Lastly the calculations at the bottom of the receipt are off by at least a dollar so if you do go there do the math yourself. read more

I used to like El Azteca a lot when I was younger, but hadn't been there in years until today. I remember the quality being better back in the day, but it's still... OK. Solid standard Mexican food. I went with my family, and, as we always do, we prefaced our whole order by telling the waitress we are all vegetarians. It turns out that, despite them having a "vegetarian" section on their menu, their rice (which is listed in several of the "vegetarian" dishes) is not vegetarian. I just don't understand places that do this-- if you're going to list something as vegetarian, make sure it is fully vegetarian. They offered double beans, or subbing in salad for $1. My brother ordered a bean and cheese chimichanga, with double beans instead of rice. His order came out, he took a bite, and spit it out-- it was a crab and shrimp chimichanga. This could have been really dangerous if he had been allergic! They were just barely apologetic--we got drive-by apologies from the waitress and the manager. My parents both subbed salads for rice, but their plates came out with rice on them. The waitress didn't catch it until she got to the table. Overall the food is OK, but the service needs some work. read more

A little bit on the pricey end for what you get. When ordering the steak and or chicken fajitas the meat is very SPARSE you get more onions than you do meat and only 3 tortillas. El Azteca has really held up over the years. We used to go there when my kids were little and it was delicious then. We went there tonight and our whole party enjoyed their food. I had the tacos de Alambre, which have chorizo, bacon, beans, and grilled onions, with melted cheese. Loved it. I had a swirl, which was not that great; the sangria part of it wasn't frozen, so the "swirl" was not swirly. Food and drinks here just aren't very good. Chicken fajita salad is just a plain salad in a taco shell with dry chicken on top (no onions or anything else indicating a fajita) and a scoop of sour cream. The service was nice and quick. The front room is jam packed and very loud. The food was edible but not particularly flavorful and the margaritas were too sweet and syrupy. The plates were presented well and were not soupy or overly cheesy. The chips were stale but the salsa was good. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here but if I was hungry and the line for Great Sage was too long it would be an ok alternative. Veg tip: they have a few options, to include bean tacos and a pretty good chile relleno with a weird (possibly canned) pepper and not the fat, dark green poblanos I'm used to. The bean burrito I ordered turned out to be a burro enchilada style. I'm not sure if it was made incorrectly it they don't know the difference. The food is reasonably priced, and though I only ordered water, friends I was with really liked the margaritas. Service was very good, especially considering how busy the restaurant was. My only complaint would be that the place does get insanely busy. I went there with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday recently, and we waited for about 90 minutes to get seated. All the while, we were waiting in the bar area, but the bar was so crowded that we could not even stand in the area comfortably, without worrying that we were imposing on the people seated around the area. They really need more space for people to wait, because they don't take reservations, so waiting around for a table is your only option on busy weekend nights. read more

Not only has the food gone down hill recently, but had terrible experience today. Ordered lunch special and asked to switch rice and beans for vegetables. Was told that it would be no problem. When bill arrived, enchiladas were $5 more than should have been. Was told that because of the change, I no longer qualified for lunch special. I told them that waitress should have given me a heads up, but manager told me too bad for me. Overall, food has been bad last few times I've been there and now to be ripped off is not cool.
