We heard lots of good things about El Barrio and since we were in the downtown area, we decided to check it out ourselves... So glad we did! Being downtown, parking is not always the greatest, but it was a lovely evening for walking less than a block to the restaurant. It was a Saturday evening so there was a little wait, but we were able to sit outside and have a drink while we waited. Once inside, the place was dimly lit, really loud with music and very clean. And for having unisex bathrooms, those were surprisingly clean as well. Our waitress was great, I wish I could remember her name... but I do know she was from Cali. We ordered a couple of strawberry margaritas, which were just your basic drink, but still refreshing. Started off with a basket of chips, salsa and fundido. This is considered an appetizer, so no freebies here. The chips were fresh and warm, the salsa had a nice flavor and the fundido was ok according to the kiddo. We had the grilled shrimp tacos with rice and beans. You had to assemble your own tacos tonight, and order rice and beans separately as the taco plate had no sides, but all delicious.... Beans had a nice kick, the shrimp tacos were missing something in my opinion, but not sure what. We also had the best shrimp quesadilla we ever tried. It has overly stuffed and cheesy with wonderful lime cream sauce to go with it. This entree was a huge hit all around and it did come with a side, so no extra charges. Food first, thoughts after... Oh my goodness. This was delicious. The ingredients were so fresh and the flavors were good. The sopa seca was spicy but delicious. I asked for hot sauce don't think I added any. The guacamole was perfect. Good texture and kept getting compliments from the table. Good portion of shrimp in ceviche and another dish. The service was noticeably amazing. They were always there and always trying to clear things not needed. The waitress was really nice and considerate. Loved our time here. Spacious and colorful interior.

This was my first time here. It was ok. Not sure if I will go back again. The quesadilla had a nice taste it was packed. The queso was very good. We walked in and didn't have to wait long at all.

My favorites were the chicken and rice soup and the potato taquitos. The beef quesadilla was also great, and the service truly stood out. Our server helped us split the entrée and boxed our leftovers with extra sauce. Such thoughtfulness was definitely a highlight of El Barrio. Having to pay for chips and salsa was a bit of a downside, but we still really enjoyed dinner and plan on coming back. The pomegranate margarita was just as good as one you'd find at any bar, and I'd highly recommend it.

GET THE MOLE!! im so picky when it comes to mole. i absolutely LOVED their twist on it. it wasn't super rich like a traditional mole, but sooooo flavorful.

Been here several times. I was there during a weeknight and, not unlike any other time that I have been here it was packed at 5:30 PM. That being the case, I took an open seat at the bar ordered a drink and then food. They have a full bar here and the craft drafts are now limited to only five although they have several canned beer options. It was Tuesday night, so it was Taco Tuesday night, which meant tacos were $3.75 each. I ordered a couple tacos, chips and salsa, queso, guacamole, and rice & beans. Everything was fantastic, especially the fresh guacamole and chips. I wasn't a fan of the rice and beans, the rice had a odd flavor to it that I was not digging.

We stopped in for a light lunch and shared the bean dip, pico de gallo, and al carbon tacos. The al carbon tacos were absolutely slamming, and the bean dip turned out to be a standout surprise--the smokiness really elevated such a simple dish. There's a lot more on this menu I want to explore, so a return visit is definitely in order.

Came here for a lunch with some coworkers. We parked on the street - I didn't drive thankfully, so I didn't see if there was an official parking lot nearby. Service was good and pretty fast. We ordered the queso and guacamole for appetizers and I especially loved the guacamole. I got the Gulf Shrimp Quesadilla and it was pretty good. Seemed like fresh ingredients, maybe a little skimpy on the shrimp. The food is definitely not "cheap Mexican" or the typical "taco/burrito/quesadilla with refried beans and rice" plate, which is more common in my area. Solid four stars overall. I'd probably come back, but I might try something different.

I went here for dinner with a friend! The atmosphere was nice and clean, and we were seated quickly. I ordered the chicken tacos with shredded lettuce, sour cream, and pico on the side, and everything was fresh and flavorful. The server was very nice and checked on us often, which made for a great overall experience.

I think you either love this place or hate it. My husband really likes it and I am not a fan. We came for Valentine's Day and there was an hour and a half wait, so obviously it is a popular place. Service was fine and I enjoyed the margaritas which came in a wide variety of flavors. My husband got al carbon tacos which he said were seasoned well and he liked how unique they were as opposed to the tacos you'd get at a regular Mexican restaurant. I got the chorizo meatloaf which I think I would have enjoyed more without the ranchera sauce. I didn't realize ranchera was something with a pico base so that's my bad. I was envisioning a creamy type of sauce. I think it all boils down to if you like fancy Mexican or basic Mexican and I just happen to fall on the plainer side of things.

This place is different. The menu is not typical. There are tacos and quesadillas but prepare to explore your palate. I had the Pepeto soup. The half serving is mooooooore than enough. If you are about that spicy life, this habanero-lime soup is perfecto. Roast pork and little corn rounds just help to layer all the wonderful flavors in this soup. Our bar tender, Allison, was great. She made some great margaritas and chatted us up. It's not trendy-more casual and laid back, wear what you like. I can't wait to visit again.

I was very disappointed with my experience at this El Barrio location. We arrived during a slow afternoon and politely requested a booth, which was refused with noticeable attitude. Throughout our entire visit, at least three booths remained empty, making the refusal even more baffling. We were seated next to a door that was supposedly "not in use," yet staff repeatedly went through it, sending cold air directly onto my face. When a third guest arrived and sat in the only available chair, staff came over and barked at him rather than addressing the situation professionally. When I later asked our waitress if we could be moved due to the cold air, I was met with a condescending look and spoken to as if I were a child as she theatrically locked the door. The food at this location was mediocre at best, but no amount of culinary skill could make up for the consistently poor service. The only reason they got two stars was because I was told the mixed drinks were phenomenal. This is especially frustrating because the Homewood location is excellent and sets a much higher standard. This location either needs serious management intervention or should not be operating as it is. I won't be returning.

We were craving Mexican food, and this restaurant came up a lot in our search for popular spots in Birmingham. It was pretty busy at lunchtime, so we waited about 15-20 minutes for a table..probably longer if it had been more than just the two of us. We started with the guacamole. It wasn't bad at all, solid, but not something I'd rave about or feel the need to order every time. For my meal, I went with the shrimp tacos, and I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. They didn't have much flavor, and there weren't many toppings to make them feel special. I'm a cheese girl, so I was also sad to see they didn't come with any. The green sauce was very tasty, though. Overall, lunch was fine, but neither of us felt strongly about returning. If you're visiting from out of town with only a limited number of meals to try, we'd probably skip this one.

After numerous recommendations over the years we were finally able to try El Barrio and oh man it was well worth the wait. This place is always bustling. The hostess greeted us promptly and was so friendly. She informed us it would be a 30-45 minute wait. We lallygagged around the neighborhood (there are a few bars within walking distance to enjoy). Once we returned we snagged a few spots at the bar. The bartender greeted us quickly. We ordered a strawberry margarita and it was light, delicious, and so fresh. We decided on the queso and added the chorizo. Honestly the best queso we've had. And the chips were just as good. I got the steak tacos and he got the barbaco quesadilla. The tacos were so good. The steak was so flavorful, tortillas were fresh, and the cabbage was a great added crunch. The quesadilla was so big, crispy, and full of flavor. In my opinion El Barrio is the best bang for your buck. read more

I was skeptical that I'd love El Barrio, as much as my friends hyped it up, but this is my new favorite spot. Good drinks and the food is incredible - the goat cheese queso, beef barbacoa quesadillas, and all of the salad are my family's favorite dishes! One of my favorite spots in the area!! El Barrio will always be such a great, charming spot to visit in Birmingham! This isn't your regular Tex-Mex -- it's better. The wait staff is amazing, as always, the food is consistently great, and the margaritas are definitely my favorite I've ever had. I've only ever been during Covid times, but their adaptations to keep customers as safe as possible do not go unnoticed. read more

We were told to go here by just about every local we talked too, definitely a neighborhood favorite! We ordered salsa, worth the money! And unlimited refills. Next up entrees, my boss ordered the Chorizo meatloaf, he said it was his favorite meal so far in Birmingham! I ordered the Steak, it was cooked perfectly. The potato's were so different but so good. A unique take on food for sure. We also ordered the Barrio cornbread, looked very fancy, tasted very good but we were so full we couldn't finish it. Can't wait to come back to Alabama, this will stay on our must go list. read more

Great food! Long wait.. I was finally able to get around to visit El Barrio after almost two years of wanting to do so! They have very odd hours in my opinion but they actually stay open later than the hours online show. We ended up getting there by 7pm and it was packed.. a very small space inside with limited seating. They told us it would be a 35 minute wait but possibly sooner if we didn't mind the bar or "sharing a table." We said either was fine. This was my first experience sharing a table at a restaurant but it wasn't bad because there was plenty of space in between us and the other diners. The restaurant is not a traditional Mexican restaurant where you automatically get chips and salsa. You have to order it. The prices aren't horrible but they are a tad higher than a traditional Mexican restaurant, but not much higher. I got the beef enchiladas which were delicious! And he got the chicken enchiladas. The queso dip is pretty good. And the margaritas only come on the rocks which was a disappointment. I really enjoyed the restaurant but I would choose a traditional Mexican restaurant because I love frozen margaritas and free chips and dip LOL read more

Recently visited El Barrio with our daughter, her first trip...my second. I've always enjoyed eating at this restaurant. This was no different. We thoroughly enjoyed the Queso Fundido and chips, as well as the Gulf Shrimp Quesadilla. Delicious meal. Oh, and their margaritas. Can't leave a review without saying how tasty they were. We don't make it to downtown Birmingham to eat often, but this is definitely a spot to go back to. read more

This is my first time coming here and I have to say I HIGHLY enjoyed my experience here. Between the very friendly and informative waiters to the owner taking care of me and my guest as we waited to be seated. Now to start off, parking is going to be difficult to find especially on the weekend and get ready to wait for a good min if its crowded because of the small to medium interior. But once you get inside its very beautiful and homey. Everything I ordered I enjoyed because of the uniqueness of each dish from the seasonal guacamole with bacon bits and sliced strawberries to the chicken enchiladas. You WILL get your money worth ordering from here because the portion of food is enough to feed multiple people. In case you're not hungry the bar and drink selection is quite nice itself, so just come in and grab a few drinks while you wait or chill outside. read more

Depending on where you're from, the food here is trying hard to be a modern twist on Mexican food, to which I wasn't impressed. Lacked flavor mainly. The establishment appears to be popular because it's location but you should come here with low expectations. You'll be satisfied that way. I had hired hopes I suppose. Service was as you expected. Atmosphere was ok. Couldn't tell the theme to be honest. Kind of like multiple people had a spin in the decor. It's not bad but it's not great either. read more

My husband and I are in town for a music festival and went here for lunch without knowing anything about it and I am so happy we did!! Another great experience at El Barrio. As always, the only complaint is the long wait time, but it's worth the wait! We always put our name on the wait list then go grab a drink somewhere nearby, like Collins Bar or Atomic, and they call to let you know when your table is ready. First, the drinks are always very fresh and not too sweet. I highly recommend whatever their seasonal margarita is. I got the Pomegranate Margarita, and it was great. The salsa is very fresh and has a nice, subtle chipotle flavor. Even though they charge for salsa, it's worth it, plus they give you free refills. For entrees, we ordered our usual, the Spicy Chicken Tostada, and the Friday special, Pork Barbacoa. The tostada has tons of fresh vegetables on it, so it's similar to a chicken salad. The barbacoa has a unique combination of winter ingredients like brussel sprouts, apples and pecans. It's one of those seasonal menu items that I look forward to all year long. Atmosphere: Nicely decorated, darker lighting, great place to catch up with friends. Pretty busy, pretty loud. Food: Al pastor tacos - man were they delicious. The pork is full of flavor, absolutely love the sauce in it. The pickled onions and cabbage mix give the tacos some tangyness and crunch. Queso fundido - I just love queso, and man do they make it well. I believe theirs is goat cheese based, which gives it an extra tangy twist. Absolutely loved it. Guacamole - well made, fresh avocados. A great addition to anything that you order. Spicy mezcal margarita - must try. They aren't cheap on the alcohol. Service: A bit slow, but still good considering how many tables our waitress had. We had a great time, didn't even notice the time go by. read more

Short Review: Excellent food, casual atmosphere, great/friendly service. The food is what I'd call a Mexican/Southern fusion. It's unlike anything I've had. A must try! Long Review: My first trip to Birmingham and I was looking for their version of hipster. Tucked in the middle of a gentrified block in downtown Birmingham , this is definitely it. A new take on "Nouveau Mexican" with a Southern flair. The ceviche is absolutely excellent; nice starter. The Chicken Tinga is a must try. Its chicken thighs slow cooked over cumin grits and topped with a chipotle broth mixed with mushrooms, poblanos, bacon and peas. Hats off to the chef; its excellent! The drinks are amazing - they have an array of margarita drinks. The signature Barrio margarita is really tasty, but the Grapefruit margarita is especially tasty, and mist importantly not tart. The servers were really friendly, and so were the other patrons. They really got this one right. 5 stars for the food, ambiance, and service. Its a special place. read more

I double dated here a week ago and enjoyed it a lot! They have a nice outside area with a lot of seating for Covid regulations. I've heard a lot of good things about this place, and don't get me wrong my experience was great, but I just didn't love everything there. I had the seasonal guacamole to start and there was probably less than 1 avocado in it and a lot of extra stuff that adds well to the flavor, but adds poorly texture wise. Things were just stacked on top of the guac and not mixed in making it annoying to eat and also overdoing the flavor. My ceviche was pretty good though so that really made my night. However, everything my friends got looked delicious. The plantain chips with pork on it was awesome, the queso was great, and the tacos looked amazing. I'll be back in a couple weeks to try some of the other menu items and reupdate if I love them! read more

I can't really review because it was shut down at 11:30 today. We were coming for a birthday lunch, checked the website for hours, there was no notice it was closed for New Years on the website or on the door. Very disappointed. We went to TastyTown and it was delicious!!! I highly recommend it. read more

The food and drinks are amazing and the staff is friendly, but they make it incredibly challenging to eat there due to their strange hours, unreasonable waits (since they don't do reservations), and small capacity. Reservations would make eating here much more worthwhile, but for some reason they don't seem to agree. It's almost as if they like having the place unreasonably packed on weekends... For example, I've tried to eat there 4 times in the last month: * Wednesday 7pm: Closed for a private event. We were given free guac coupons to come back another day. Not sure how often they do private events, so we didn't mind and went elsewhere * Friday 5pm: 1.5 hour wait (crazy considering how early this is). We decided to eat elsewhere * Following Friday 9pm: We knew the waits were crazy on Fridays, so we figured we could wait it out and squeeze in at a later time. We showed up at 9:05 and they said they were closed and they couldn't take us. This is one of the most popular restaurants in Birmingham, so why on earth would they close at 9pm on a Friday?! Imagine how much business they're turning down! * Sunday 1pm: Closed all day. Thankfully we looked it up, but again, imagine how much business they're turning down by being closed on a Sunday! I could understand limited hours on Sundays, but again, I can't imagine how much business they're missing out on. Again, once you get a seat, this really is an amazing restaurant, so my recommendation to anyone is to go Tuesday - Thursday or Friday for lunch. I haven't tried Saturday for lunch, so that might be worthwhile too. Friday and Saturday evenings just aren't worth it as you're going to wait for hours and people are packed like sardines near the bar. If someone at El Barrio is reading this, please consider taking reservations and at the very least being open till 10 on the weekends. These small changes will significantly improve your customer's experience. read more

Omg good don't even began to say how good this place is. My daughter told me about it because I am celiac and they have amazing Gluten free food. They will sent someone out who is very knowledgeable about GF. I will always go back her and I love love the people who work there. You may have to wait , but that's always ok with me. Wow, the reviews were not kidding, this place was packed the moment it opened. Glad we read the reviews first. We got here right after it opened. No tables, but we were able to give our names and sit at the bar. We ordered drinks and the guacamole. That guacamole was the best I've ever had. .no lie. They also had a seasonal guacamole which was candied bacon and strawberry but since I'm on the diet we didn't get to try that one. Right after we got the guacamole we were offered a table so we really lucked out with a short wait. We both ordered the salmon because we are becoming that couple who order the same thing. Lol. Salmon was cooked just right and was really good. Since we had a gift certificate to use up, we also ordered dessert to share. We got sopapillas which is ice cream with cinnamon twists. Delicious! I am not a picture guy. I am a food, experience and service guy. Experience/Service: Attentive and casual experience. I met the owner/chief the day before, because my storage place is above El Barrio. I instantly liked him. Let me tell you what told me I would like this place instantly. My son order a diet coke. They brought a carafe of diet coke. Lovely, little thing but it counted. Food: Yummy. The corn appetizer was so good, wow. I got the scallops special, perfectly cooked. Not over seasoned and presentation was lovely. Son got Taco's El Carbon (Steak), some of the best I ever tasted, he agreed. My wife got Chicken Quesadilla (More like a very special BBQ Chicken Quesadilla). WINNER, we all agreed. Everything including the chips with Guacamole appetizer were top shelf good. Oh, yes I had THREE El Barrio Margarita's. $7.50 per was a really good value, so I had three, I think, I can't remember. Two days later, I took my son for lunch El Barrio. What does that tell you?? El Barrio never disappoints -- their staff is friendly, their food is fresh and delicious, and the atmosphere/decor is pretty perfect. I usually get the vegetarian quesadilla. I started ordering it because I was a vegetarian, and now I get it because I just really like it. I've had a wide variety of menu options, though, and I really like them all -- the tacos are fantastic, the brunch is really good, and I appreciate that their salads are substantial and creative instead of being afterthoughts. The cocktails are also excellent, and they serve local beer. I've visited El Barrio for lots of different reasons: lunch with a friend, brunch on the weekend, by myself during the work week, with a big group of coworkers, with my parents (who never like to experiment with food), and with foodie friends from NYC (who always like to experiment with food), and every visit has been excellent. El Barrio is extremely popular, and it gets pretty packed, so go early if you're hoping to get seated quickly on the weekends especially. read more

It is a cool little place. The atmosphere is really nice. You may have to do community seating at one or two tables... The tables are also close so intimate conversations are not best here. But if you want AMAZING FOOD....this is it. I had the chips and dip with peppers. Delish and freshly made. For my meal I had the spicy chicken tostada . OMG....really good. It is more like a salad. At any rate, my co worker grabbed the meatloaf....and I know what you are thinking....meatloaf....I sampled it and it was so good. We were still talking about how good the food was the following day. And I plan to take the hubby and kiddo next time. (but I think this is more of a date night and group outing kind of spot...but the kiddo loves food like this. ) Will make this a regular spot. read more

The food here in my experience has been consistently great, and the menu seems innovative without being bizarre which I appreciate. The decor works really well for a modern Mexican style restaurant/bar combo, and it's convenient for a drink or dinner after work downtown. As with every great Birmingham restaurant it fills up so getting there early is a plus. I've enjoyed everything I've ordered here (the grapefruit margarita is my go-to drink), the brunch shrimp and grits I had one weekend was to die for, and I really like their chicken and rice soup with salad too. The menu changes but there are always really great options and I've never been disappointed. Hurrah! read more

Very trendy restaurant, one that helped begin the wave of restaurants now making their mark on Bham's food scene. The wait for dinner is typically at least an hour long...this problem can be solved by going to one of the nearby bars. I also recommend going to brunch there, however there are not many veggie options at brunch. The food and service have always been top notch. I love all their salads, their house salsa (I ate boatloads of it, thank you for the endless refills), and I highly suggest ordering the Paloma for two (for one ;)) as a drink. My wife Amy and I finally made it to El Barrio and it absolutely lived up to the hype. In our opinion, this is the best Mexican food in the state of Alabama. Every dish had incredible flavor, was fresh, creative, and perfectly executed without trying too hard. The atmosphere was energetic but still comfortable, and the service matched the quality of the food. You can tell this is a place that takes pride in every detail. Birmingham is lucky to have this gem. We'll definitely be back hungry. read more

This place was packed! We almost didn't stop to eat here, we were so hungry and concerned about the wait. For there to be a lot of people, customer service was still satisfactory. The roasted Chile relleno tasted similar to my Tia's from back home and I was delighted to be greeted with such a sentimental reminder. The guac could use some TLC but I have high standards when it comes to traditional Mexican food. If this place stays this busy, they could benefit from some new hires. read more

I lived in Texas for a couple of years and they are definitely the land of authentic Mexican food. I was disappointed once I moved to Birmingham that there were no good Mexican food options. Until I made the wonderful decision of eating at El Barrio. All the dishes ordered were amazing and their Cocktails were delicious as well. If you can catch them on the night they have their special tamales, they are to die for! Also, I highly recommend the Mezcal margherita with some high shelf Mezcal - best marg I've ever had. The dessert selection was a pleasant surprise and I've never had a bad one here. read more
