This is the one bar we were excited to visit. EL Cafetin Bar located in the middle of Calle San Sebastian in Old San Juan is certainly vibrant and famous for the sexy bartenders. They do not release a schedule of when the entire purpose of the bar is where they take their shirts off. Me and my friends traveled from Minnesota on a short, unexpected trip. We hoped to experience puerto rican culture around the city and heard about this bar and were severely disappointed. It did not reach our expectations and fell flat upon our expanse within the bar that we stayed for three hours at. Overall, I would recommend those who have nothing else to do with their day to sit around waiting for these men, but those who are on a short time schedule should avoid this bar at all costs. read more

With it being 1 year since my previous visit to El Cafetin, I definitely had to update my review because we all know that "sharing is caring" ;). My previous visit was in April 2022 and my most recent visit was on Thursday, 04/27/2023 (around 10pm). I am happy to report that inflation has not yet affected the cost of the $5 mojitos that you can get from El Cafetin! YES!!! $5 mojitos are still a thing if you do decide to stop by El Cafetin. :)) $5 folks! I only needed one to feel a lil bit prettier ;). I would recommend that you stop by right when they open up at 5pm to get your evening started off the right way...this way you can get a table to enjoy a game of Jenga, order a Sampler Platter of food for $25 to munch on (definitely is a lot of food for at least 3-4 people to share), drink some $5 mojitos (mango is my favorite), & listen to some awesome music! During our most recent visit, it was later in the evening (10pm) and we we still able to order food. You can let the bartender know that you want your food to go and they'll put it in a to-go box instead of bringing it out on a flat platter plate. We sat at the bar & ate our food there. Even though it was late, our food still came out freshly made and hot. IMO, adding El Cafetin to your itinerary is a MUST because not only is it conveniently located w/in walking distance of El Morro, it has a laidback but fun atmosphere/vibe that is the perfect way to get your evening started or stop for a drink & quick bite to eat while walking around in Viejo San Juan. Fun little place with great drinks and vibe! Much like the other little bars in the area this one has pretty cheap, but strong, drinks. They have $5 Mojitos in a variety of flavors to choose from. They serve other food and drinks as well but the mojito is advertised both outside and inside of the bar. The atmosphere is fun and energetic. The music is loud, people are dancing and they even have little Jenga puzzles on each table. Probably only good for a group of up to 4-5 as there isn't a ton of space and I can imagine things getting pretty crowded on a weekend. Immediately saw $5 dollar mojito signs and ran in lol, the place was full with locals and tourists with a really fun vibe. Played reggaeton dance music (perfect for Puerto Rico) and tried the coco mojitos, they were so good! This is such a great find! We were given a list of spots to hit on a night out on San Sebastian that included El Cafetin. We arrived around 8:30pm on a Friday night and the crowd was already so deep that it was spilling out onto the street! Big signs advertised $5 mojitos and $5 beer and a shot. The dance music was pumping and the entire bar was one large dance floor. After a brief pause to steel our nerves, we pushed our way inside and through the clumps of dancing patrons, shoving ourselves towards the bar, several flavors of mojitos were written on a small sign behind the register, with the two most popular highlighted - coconut and passion fruit. We got one of each, paid cash $10 + tax and quickly exited the throngs of people back to the cobblestone streets. One of us preferred the coconut mojito - it was creamy and yet still bright and light. And the other preferred the tangy and fun passion fruit. The crowd from El Cafetin mixed with the crowd outside of El Sombrillo Rosa and the whole street became a party! The cups are plastic, so you can just discard them before you continue bar hopping. This was a big plus, as we weren't brave enough to stay inside the crowded bar after we got our drinks. Now the next night... that's a different story. The location is disgusting !!! They have 2 bathrooms, one for ladies and one for gents.... The issue is the mens bathroom doesn't have a door so when you're walking towards the woman's bathroom you're seeing the mens business. Also, they allow couples to have sexual relationships in the woman's bathroom, while ladies are waiting to use the only restroom available. The manager was informed of a couple f$cking in the woman's bathroom and he basically shrugged his shoulders and, in Spanish stated, "deal with it". So We knocked on the door (obviously hard enough to get the couples attention in a bar with loud music) and a bartender stating he was the manager (pedro) approached us in an aggressive manner and threaten to throw us out because we were knocking on the door. Instead of directing his attention to the couple that was occupying the only womens bathroom for over 15 minutes, he threaten to throw out the ladies attempting to use bathroom, for its actual purpose. Once the busy couple came out of the restroom he disregarded the actual problem and returned to the bar, without saying anything to the couple having sexual relations in a public location. The situation was handled in a completely unprofessional manner. The way the "manager" handled the situation was incorrect, unapologetic and in no way a bar manager should be allowing people to have sexual relations in a public location. The locations states it closes at 2 am, but here we have Pedro closing the bar at 1:30 am (pictures are time stamped, i am a private investigator by trade) not allowing anyone in and closing the door and putting items from the outside of the location in the bar, closing up. Old San Juan has a lot to offer. A lot of amazing bars, with pleasant bartenders and employees, making sure you have a great time. Don't waste your precious time here. read more
