Hostess wasn't very friendly, mumbled "sit there" (we think) and so we continued to look at hit him confused. He acknowledge us again and pointed at a table so we just walked to it, not a big deal but damn bro could've just walked us over and not pointed in the direction of 5 different tables. His legs don't work I guess. I got a full plate of supreme shredded chicken nachos, came with about 15 chips, 7 cracked/8 whole tortilla chips and a decent amount of shredded chicken. We went on Christmas Eve or a late lunch because it was all we could find open. We hadn't been in ab out 10 years. What a pleasant surprise! Interior was pleasant and the service was outstanding. Ordered enchiladas suizas, but they were more like just regular enchiladas ( enchiladas suizas is know for a creamy green sauce and a generous amount of Swiss cheese), with a side of beans ( not bad), and a side of plain corn ( flavorless). My wife ordered a 2 taco plate on corn tortillas ( they brought them in flour ‍). The ground beef had a unique flavor. (Side note: ground beef taco is not q Mexican thing). After stopping at 4 different restaurants that either closed early or are closed on Thursdays, we happened upon El Cancun's. The chips and salsa was on the table immediately and our server came and got our drink order. Highly recommend the peach margarita. All four of us were very satisfied with our entrees. Pros: View/location & Servers Cons: Food, Host, Bees *None of the staff members wore masks* The location for this restaurant can't be beat. A stunning view of the lake and mountains really enhances the experience. Our waitress was amazing, she provided us with information on local things to do and really was attentive. The only issues I really experienced was the excessive amount of bees (bumble bees and a wasp) that live within the wood on the outdoor dining deck, the unwelcoming host (she may have just had a rough day), and sadly (the most important part) the food itself. While I enjoyed the rice and beans, the beef in my chimichanga and the beef tacos was extremely dry and we could not bring ourselves around to finishing it. Great food! Want to know what they do well? I have eaten here since they opened many years ago. It is always Clean and fresh. That cannot be said for many restaurants anywhere. Sure, staffing issues, are always a challenge for any small business. But, you go to a restaurant for good food, right? It is good and the beverages are good as well. Why don't you try something new this time? My favorite item they make is the chicken poblano. If you substitute a chili relleno, for chicken, they make a chili relleno with Pablano. It is fantastic! This has to be my favorite Mexican restaurant around; close to being my favorite restaurant for the entire area. Some of my favorite dishes are the grilled chicken nachos, and the enchilada salad, although everything that I've had is great! The salsa is AMAZING! I dream about this salsa. The food is amazing, however, the service is horrible. Not very friendly nor do they check on you once they've taken your order and brought it out to you. If I could leave zero stars I would. I went to El Cancun tonight for takeout since my husband was at a meeting. I ordered a vegetarian meal with extra chips and extra salsa. Pretty simple, right? Nope! When the meal came out I checked it and found ground beef on my meal. I brought it to the cashier's attention and she argued with me saying that is what I ordered even though she was holding a ticket that said vegetarian. She finally took it back to the kitchen and brought me the right meal. Then when I checked out, my $9 meal came to a total of $19. I questioned the total and was told it was $9 for the meal, $4.50 for salsa, $3.50 for a small bag of chips AND $1 for the plastic takeout bag! Never again. The food is marginal at best and certainly not worth the $19 I was charged. read more

The dining options in town are limited, so we thought we'd take our chances at El Cancun. The reviews on this place seem to be really high or really low. Our experience was on the low side (two stars). The salsa was fine but the chips tasted stale. My son ordered a beef burrito and they brought him a chicken quesadilla. The refried beans were liquidy and lacked taste. My wife and I ordered steak fajitas for two; the steak was supposed to be rare (thinking that it would continue cooking on the hot platter when it came to the table). When our order came out the platter wasn't sizzling or steaming, not even a little bit. Plus, the steak on the sizzle-less platter looked well-done. We sent it back. Four minutes later, our waiter (he was very nice, by the way) came out with a sizzling platter but the steak looked exactly the same. It was like they had scraped the previous meat onto a new platter. To be sure, I'm not sure that they did that, but it sure seemed that way. My wife (who has restaurant experience) looked at me said, "We will never come here again." That's unfortunate because we vacation here quite a bit and are always looking for good restaurants with courteous service. The search will continue after our experience tonight. read more

This mexican place has amazing views overlooking lake chatuge in beautiful Hiawassee! The service is attentive, the food is typical american mexican with melted white cheese on everything, and the decor charming. Its your best bet for mexican in this area! And they have a nice patio on the highway highlighting the lake views. I've been here over a dozen times and like the salsa and choose pork (carnita)tacos/burrito dishes typically when I crave mexican. I cant highlight any particular dishes as "amazing" but they do seem "fresher" then other mexican options in the area. They have cold beer! read more

We tried this place out for dinner in after exhausting many of the other options in Hiawassee. The atmosphere here seems consistent with most Mexican restaurants: bright and neon. The service here is good but not great. It's obviously a family-run establishment because as we were eating, many of the employees were dining in a large group with kids as well. The kids ran around the restaurant for most of our meal and although I didn't mind, I can see how this would be annoying to some of the patrons. On to the meal...we started off with a cheese dip. Do not order the cheese dip--it is not good. At all. We ended up not eating most of it. However, with that in mind, my meal turned out much better than I was expecting. I ordered a shrimp wrapped in bacon dish and it was plenty of food and but not overwhelming. The flavoring was on-point and of course, anything wrapped in bacon is just ultimately more delicious. I found this place a little pricey for my expectations of a Hiawassee meal, but nonetheless, worth a visit. read more

The food here is a better than average for Georgia Mexican restaurants. Add to that lunch specials. 31 OF THEM!!!! And good prices makes it a 4 star! The lunch specials are everyday except Sunday. Most of the specials are arouind $5.50 I think thats pretty good! They are open every day off the week from 11am to 1000p. Seems to be plenty of room as its a large place. You can eat inside, and they also have a deck out front if you wish to eat outside which has a view of the lake. It's worth a try, especially for lunch! read more

The staff doesn't have any kind of pride in their job and lack customer service skills. The food is not anything impressive. We ordered takeaway and they never let us know when our food was ready, despite a sign on their door saying they would bring it to our car.
