This was the best restaurant we went to in monterey. I love ALL the options for vegetarians and I love that the food is authentic Mexican food. We ordered the combo plate #2 with Ranchero tacos, spinach enchilada, beans and rice AND nopales taco. All of it was amazing. I was craving Mexican and always prefer a pure vegan establishment. I couldn't believe when I found a place that catered to both. The place is tiny, with very limited parking and limited seating, and had a long line that took a while. Its so worth it anyway. The service is efficient, the menu is extensive. I randomly chose about 10 items for our party of 6. Every single dish was outrageously good. Loved my cactus tostada. They were out of my fave type of dish, tamales, and I was glad because it forced me to try other things. Horchata and hot chocolate were really good. I wish I lived next door. The food is excellent!!! When you come here be prepared for terrible service, the person taking orders is quite rude, however she is extremely busy. Don't let that discourage you from the tasty food you will receive. If you order fajitas be prepared to pay for extra tortillas because they only give you two and you really need four. Hot damn. I've been veggie for a good while now, and it is hard to find good vegan Mexican food. So, I ordered pozole (it was about $8) with an horchata, and it was great considering that it was all a bit watered down. This place has a few downsides though. They close early on Fridays and are completely closed on Saturday's (who does that)! We were in the area for a short weekend trip, and we barely had enough time to pick something up before getting back on the road. They also run out of food pretty quick, BUT if you're lucky they'll have a fresh batch ready in about half an hour. So, if you're down for to test your luck on some pretty decent vegan food, this is the place for you. read more

I came here for the first time with my non-vegan family after visiting the aquarium and we all loved the food. I ordered combination plate #2 with steak tacos and horchata and I was impressed. The "steak" tacos tasted like Lengua tacos and i used to love those before going vegan. My only cons would be that the food was a little expensive and we did wait a while for our food to get to us, but I thought it was worth it. Even my carnivorous husband who tries to eat less meat but veggie meals are rarely filling enough, he loves and gets full off El Cantaro meals! Even though I'm not vegetarian, I would definitely go back for the potato taco. I had the #3 combo plate (crispy potato taco, chickin' taquito, and an enchilada) with green sauce and black beans. I also tried my husband's nopales taco. My favorite of all the items was hands-down the potato taco. Great texture and flavor. The taquito ranked next in flavor followed by the enchilada. Other members of our party of six were satisfied with their food with the exception of the salmon substitute; unfortunately, that was deemed unrecommendable. This is a small casual place, not too far from the aquarium. If you're in the mood for Mexican food, give it a try (especially the potato tacos!)! Okay, this place has parking and plenty of room to sit... and guess what?! It's all vegan baby. I'm not one who can judge on what "real" mexican food is, but these menu items seem pretty damn legit, albeit the vegan version. It's the Daiya cheese that gives it a way mostly. The mole is pretty damn delicious. Oh yeah... the menu is MASSIVE... Almost as massive as the freaking huge portions they serve you. And the price is just right. Good job. I'd definitely come back here. This place is a solid 3.5 Stars. YELP, if you're listening (like ever), go to the 1/2 star or 10 star rating. It makes wayyyyyyyy more sense. Some places consider themselves to be Vegan when they really aren't or because they have 1-2 items on their menu that has no meat. BUT...this place is a true vegan restaurant!!! Vegan Mexican food? whaaaaat? I am not vegan but that was my reaction, more excited than skeptical. For my boyfriend (also not vegan), it was the opposite. We checked out the menu and ordered THE crispy potato tacos, mushroom tacos, and a chickin' taco (of course my bf kept asking what was in the "chickin"). The first thing I had was a crispy potato taco, because who doesn't like crispy? and........ it was GOOD. The other reviews were right! The shell was properly crispy, while the inside was filled with mashed potato like consistency. The other two items were also good, though after having the potato taco, it was hard to make a fair judgement on anything else. We both enjoyed the food and are willing to repeat the experience. Young girl at the register has a rude attitude. When asked questions about the menu she had a snobby demeanor. Almost like she had better places to be. This is not a five star restaurant when you're serving on paper plates, which I find ironic for a vegan restaurant. I asked to sample the soups and when I asked if I was making this too difficult for her she responded with a "yes"! Then she went on to scoff and make remarks with the cook. How hilarious given that you're in a customer service line of work. I always drive by here on my way to work. I was skeptic on Vegan Mexican food. But then I saw they have a Grilled pineapple burrito.... That got my attention. That is so good! This is a great place for vegans. I had the potato tacos with a torta. The tacos were similar to flautas not a tortilla.
