What a charming spot! It's tucked away in the back of a small shopping center and clearly popular with locals--there were plenty of people stopping in for takeout. The space itself is on the smaller side, with both indoor and outdoor seating, and on Friday night a musician was even setting up to play guitar, which added a nice touch. I was in the mood for something fresh and ordered one of the large salads--the Cordycep--with cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, red onions, roasted vegetables, pumpkin seeds, soft and crunchy hemp seeds, and a sweet mustard vinaigrette. It was flavorful and satisfying, though I still had room to grab a piece of coffee cake to go. I'd definitely come back. The pizzas looked especially good, and there are several other items on the menu I'd love to try. read more

The wife and I rarely repeat a restaurant on vacation, but we came here for lunch while vacationing in Carmel By The Sea and saw they had a gluten free and vegan biscuits and gravy, so of course we came back for brunch. For lunch, I went with their Big Sur pizza on gluten free crust. The crust was impressive. Not my favorite I've ever had but still a really good job. The pizza was vegan with fried oyster mushrooms, baked white mushrooms, various veggies, and a red sauce with white sauce drizzle. Pizza was great. Really sold me on coming back the next day. As for brunch, they did not have the GF biscuits. The gravy was still vegan and they offered to serve it on GF focaccia bread. However, at $22, I couldn't do it. Besides, I would at least need to add a couple eggs for some protein and I wasn't about to spend all of that on brunch. So instead, I went with huevos rancheros. This was excellent. The poblano sauce was spicy and hearty, the tortillas nice and crisp, and the pinto beans an interesting change of pace. The potatoes were awesome. Place is plain and pretty basic. The outside seating is in the sun and facing a blacktop parking lot, so you don't come here for the ambiance. But the food and service were excellent. Great vegan meals. read more

TLDR: I would definitely try their mushroom, focused pizzas and some of the breakfast dishes that include eggs. TIPPING NOTE: this place includes the sales tax as part of the price so if you are someone, like me, who detests the idea of tipping someone on what the government is taking out of your pocket, then bear this in mind accordingly. The Review: We were traveling down to see the Calla lilies along the coast when we realized we were hungry. :-) My wife is vegetarian and I was in a vegetarian mood so we looked for vegetarian places and settled on Julia's. The menu indicates a strong focus on mushrooms, which I endorse. They have outdoor seating, but it just looks at the parking lot and the day was cold and gray so we sat inside in the back room. It was Valentine's Day and a long weekend so there were a great many vegetarians on the road and the place was about half full the entire time we were there around 12:30 PM. We were seated promptly as we had made a reservation online before we got there They had some specials posted on the wall, and when I mentioned aloud to my wife, the butternut squash and Chanterelle special, one of the diners at another table, exclaimed that we should certainly give it serious consideration as it is "out of this world". We gave it serious consideration, but my wife was not so hungry so she ordered the cauliflower buffalo "wings" and I ordered their valentines special of Lions Mane mushroom steak over cauliflower puree with a balsamic glaze. The buffalo cauliflower arrived first. The Buffalo hot glaze was true to flavor as was the dip and the arugula and celery. I would order this again. The presentation of my lions main state was very nice. I do have some suggestions about the preparation of the dish. The cauliflower purée was too creamy and liquid to my taste. I would suggest they include some potatoes and even some parsnips so that there is more substance to that portion. The purée presents as a sauce, and there's already the balsamic glaze. There were also a couple pools of what I assume to be olive oil. On the whole, there was too much liquid in this dish. There may have been too much vinegar in this dish also or perhaps it was from being combined with the buffalo cauliflower. Suffice to say, I felt a little queasy the rest of the day. Also, I probably had too much cauliflower as it is a cruciferous vegetable, and these are known to create wind. For beverages my wife had the mango juice which she liked. I don't know if it is prepared from fresh mangoes or not but I imagine it is. I had the herbs of Venus hot tea, which comes in a nice presentation and has mostly notes of vitamin vitamin C acidity. I was hoping for something more novel. For dessert, we took home an order of the alfajores raspberry. Two shortbread cookies enrobed in a vegan chocolate (I guess 60% cocoa btw)) topped with two raspberries. My wife wasn't a fan, but I liked the flavor and the crunch of the shortbread cookies. She had thought it was a cake, so the cookies took her by surprise. Mention should be made of the unique wall coating and decoration of the bathroom. Take a look! Ate dinner here for Thanksgiving. Everything on the menu was vegetarian which I loved! The portions were enough to split between two people, depending on how hungry your are. I stopped at Julia's for take out lunch while on my way back up to NorCal. I was ready for lunch but wanted to make it quick as I was eager to get back home. I had the cream of chanterelle soup which was excellent! The bread served with it was pretty good, but a bit on the oily side. I also got a side of roasted root veggies which were very good. Total transparency: 3 meals (tamale pie plate, a Cordycep large garden salad, and a California pizza) a lemonade, and one iced tea was $85. So as someone who is not used to vegetarian or vegan food whatsoever, I have to say that HANDS DOWN this was the best pizza!! We had the best time here. The pictures of the food don't do it justice. We were staying in Salinas for some family stuff this past weekend, but wanted a bit of a date night when we got into town. So we made a last minute reservation - they still had spots, so I was expecting a chill, quiet establishment. I was wrong. Julia's is apparently THE happening spot in this part of Pacific Grove on a Friday night. We couldn't find a spot in the lot, so ended up parking in the neighborhood just next to it (not a huge deal, this was all pretty easy). When we first walked in, everything was bustling, and the staff looked really busy. We weren't greeted, and stood around awkwardly for a while, before someone came by to check us in, and we then got seated a few minutes after. This gave us some time to peruse the bakery case. At that point, we knew we had to save some room for dessert. When we got seated, our server Rose came to give us the lay of the specials...which changed our game plan just a little bit. I had my heart set on a pizza, but she threw "mushroom mole tamale pie" at me (I still ended up getting the Big Sur pizza with real cheese, but was VERY tempted to be swayed) and my partner ended up getting the potato taquitos rather than the salad plan we came in with. And Rose and the rest of the staff were all friendly and super sweet! Wires got a bit crossed on our order (they first gave us the Smokehouse rather than the Big Sur), and were super nice about switching it out. The food. Let's talk about the food. Oh my god. Everything was just perfectly done. The potato taquitos were crisp and hot, and topped with a salad with finely stripped lettuce (if you know me, I like salad that is finely chopped or sliced, because otherwise, trying to eat it can just be awkward - like, I like it when I can eat my salad with a spoon, and this was a salad that I could scoop and eat with a spoon). We originally wanted to get two "small" salads, but Rose talked us down to one, and thank god, because my friends, these are NOT "small". We ended up getting the "simple" salad. Again in quotes, because it's not "simple". It has fresh greens, tomatoes, picked onions, and the most amazing cilantro dressing. The only thing that would have made this better is if everything were, uh, finely chopped so I could eat it with a spoon. And the Big Sur pizza. Just amazing. Flavors were all balanced, and not too overwhelming, but everything just...worked together. We also got an Arnold Palmer and a rooibus tea. The tea comes in a really cute steeper with a set of three hourglasses to time your steep. The only thing that I would be less effusive about is the strawberry pistachio cake that we got for dessert. It was dense and cold, and I didn't find it that remarkable. I'm gonna be dreaming about this meal for a long long time, and we really want to come back to try brunch...and have dinner again. We were also offered a free kitten on the way out. I swear it's not as sketchy as it sounds, and no, the kitten was not physically present. We half-seriously considered it, but then weighed the logistics of getting a kitten back down to LA after a weekend in an AirBnB... We were told one of the bathrooms is demonic. This is true. Check it out. It's the one by the kitchen. I didn't go into the other one, but my partner says she peeked in and it looked all happy and colorful and bright. read more

The wine selection is very short (roughly six bottles) and unadventurous. Drinks overall are basic; a lemoncello spritzer was refreshing, but the beverage program is clearly not the focus. Searching for the perfect salad? I found it. The Cordycepq garden salad! It's a perfect mix of flavors and textures. Ideal level of mustard dressing. And I don't like mustard! It's absolutely delicious!! I had this salad last week and had to come again. Emile was my server both times and she was knowledgeable about the menu and asked the chefs to accommodate my dietary restrictions. The passion fruit was a cheat treat. Moist. Sweet and tart. The ice tea tastes like there were some Floral notes. They assured me that it was plain black tea. You MUST try the bathrooms here. They are an experience. Julia's is a fantastic restaurant. Tried this place on a trip to Monterey and ended up coming back each day for the rest of the trip! The faux orange chicken tasted pretty much exactly like regular orange chicken. The sauce was very generous. Though I enjoyed it, I don't need to order it again. The potato flautas were on the specials menu but I hope they add it to the permanent menu. They were so yummy and I would definitely order them again if they were available my next trip. The breakfast potatoes were yummy and they would be made even better if they were crispy. I don't need to order these again either. The candy cap French toast is definitely interesting. I didn't know what to expect but mushroom as a dessert was very unique. I think it's worth trying if you have someone you can split the portion with. I also don't need to order this again. The fried mushrooms were absolutely delicious!!! We got the sampler but my favorite by far was the baby blue oyster mushrooms. They were so delicious, as was the dipping sauce that came with it. Would definitely order again. The standout dish here is I think is the pizza!!! The pizza is kind of pricey for the size but this is definitely the best vegan pizza I've tried. I forgot which but we tried two different pizzas and they were both delicious. I feel like you couldn't go wrong with any of the pizzas here. Something that makes the vegan pizza here stand out is the fact that they use Violife (mozzarella and cheddar blend) cheese. Every other place that has vegan pizza I've tried uses Daiya cheese which I am not a fan of at all. The Violife blend they use here is way better. I don't think it keeps very well for leftovers though but that's okay anyway because you'll struggle to not eat it all in one sitting. The truffle oil and salt they have on the crust also makes the pizza so delicious. I think their pizza is a must order here, especially for nondairy people. I miss this pizza and think about it periodically. Tried the raspberry chocolate cake and one other for dessert. The frosting was really yummy but the cake was actually pretty dry. For this reason I wouldn't bother ordering any cakes from here again. Plus that they have heaters outside for outdoor dining. I did not care for the restroom. This place is an absolute delight. I am not a vegan or vegetarian but my partner and their family are and this place was an instant hit. They have a lot of option with Faux meat options and can substitute a lot of items with vegan equivalent. I've had their Chilaquiles, orange chicken and yellow curry and they are all absolutely amazing. But the star according to my fiancé is the egg sandwich on the breakfast menu with a side of soup. It was and is their top rated egg sandwich such that we drive down from the Bay Area just for this. That's not even mentioning the specials that they have that use freshly harvest local ingredients like the Chicken of the woods pizza that we had today that was just divine. What a gem that we found after taking our dog to the beach nearby!!! Outside seating that is dog friendly but only enough room for 2 people and one pup to be seated together. If you have a larger group and you want to be outside, you'd be back to back. Ample seating inside the restaurant though. Really yummy desserts located at the front right when you walk in. Unfortunately we were stuffed and couldn't order dessert. Ok so I AM NOT a fan of vegan cheese. But let me tell you, the Big Sur makes you totally forget about the fact that you ordered vegan cheese because the ENTIRE rest of the pizza is divine!!!!! Had a fantastic dinner here after visiting big sur. Saturday evening around 7pm there was a 20 minute wait to sit inside but we could sit in a heated outside table immediately. They have a regular menu plus daily specials and soups on a chalkboard. There was also a display case of desserts. Menu is well labelled for vegan and gluten free options. I had the vegan breakfast hand pie, which was absolutely delicious and came with an incredible vegan garlic aioli dipping sauce. My non-vegetarian friend had the yellow curry and really enjoyed it. The bathroom inside had really odd dark lighting so it was sort of hard to see but it was large and clean. Staff were wonderful. They also had a live keyboardist doing music. read more

This was such a unique and tasty find during our trip to Monterey! Julia's has a very mushroom-forward menu, and you can try dishes with cordyceps, oyster mushrooms, and lion's mane, so it's a great stop if you're wanting to be adventurous with your mushroom selection. I loved that everything on the menu could be made vegan. Each dish featured fresh vegetables and healthy additions like hemp seeds. We opted for a vegan California pizza with seitan bacon, fried oyster mushrooms, and a simple salad. Julia's also had great draft beer selections such as Coronado pale ale and orange wheat beer. Our server was very friendly and personable. She let us know that Julia's was being featured on a PBS show called Check, Please! which was exciting. We loved her enthusiasm and positive energy. It made the experience more enjoyable and fun! The outdoor seating set up was very cool as well. There were booths with trellises covered in purple flowers and vines. We liked that the heat lamp was a hanging lamp that we could turn on or off easily. Ok update. I went here almost 7 years ago. It was good but I was underwhelmed at the general earthy flavor overall. The menu has not changed. The interior has changed quite a bit. Anyways the food was far far far better than my original experience. Still earthy flavor in the rice but like a good level of earthy, not overpowering. I'm very glad that over the years this place has clearly perfected their menu. You would think that's enough, to just be amazing at food....but that display case of dessert got me. I ordered a piece of chocolate mousse cake. It is made from sweet potatoes and i thought for sure this was going to be some super wierd vegetarian tasting recipe of clearly a knock off flavor.... well I ate the cake and my preconceived notions as well. Mind blowing. I thought the $10 price was steep at first but afterwards, I know I got a deal hahaha. So rich and flavorful. I was truly not expecting such good flavor. Service was very good, ambiance was as well. The food however was not. My boyfriend and I ordered Mexican dishes. Maybe that was the mistake here since it's not a Mexican food restaurant. I ordered mushroom tacos with vegan cheese. The cheese was sooooo salty but overall tacos were good. The sides of rice and beans tho were absolutely terrible. The beans tasted like canned "Amy's" beans that you'd pour over a chili dog. And the rice tasted like dry microwaved brown rice from a bag. My boyfriend ordered tamale pie which was ok. And he also had same beans and rice with a chile verde dipping sauce which seems like it's from a jar. Overall NOT worth the price $$ total disappointment. The interior is casual and cozy, and they had a fellow set up in the corner playing live music. My partner and I shared the fried oyster mushrooms, chanterelle flautas, porcini stew, and finished off with the ginger spice cake (topped with candy cap). All the dishes were amazing! We're both vegan so it can be a struggle going out to eat and finding restaurants that offer exciting vegan options. At Julia's pretty much everything they have is either vegan or can be made vegan. They use a variety of mushrooms, unique seasonings, and flavors to create innovative and exciting dishes. So much better than your run of the mill black bean burger or garden salad. The interior of the restaurant is very small, but the atmosphere is quite warm, cozy, and inviting! Extremely friendly service. I ordered the Bianca pizza alongside a limoncello spritz. Everything was so so tasty! The pizza had this amazing garlicy crust. My table also ordered the mushroom sampler. We loved the fried oyster and lion's mane mushrooms, but the cordycep mushrooms felt a little too chewy for us. Overall, we enjoyed our experience here! I LOVE this place!!! Their bathrooms too hehe there's a fairy one I didn't know about that's so pic worthy and unreal and then the usual one that's like a salt cave. The food is amazing and I come all the time since so good and I'm a mushroom lover! So many tasty vegetarian options and can taste the love and quality here. On a blustery evening my husband and I were treated to excellent service by Emily at this cozy local favorite. I say treated as they were hosting a week long Elite Event. Thank you to the owners for your generous hospitality. I chose the Smokehouse Pizza which is a yummy vegan creation with seitan bacon, cheese, green and red onions, and mushrooms. The sauce was so flavorfully tangy and sweet. The photo shows how I could hardly wait to try the first bite. My husband ordered the homemade onion ring plate as a special appetizer; which was super crunchy with a wonderful batter I would love to learn to duplicate. I also ordered the roasted artichoke which was huge and I took half of it home along with the leftover pizza as it's also a good size. Julia's hosts live music on weeknights, and we hope to return when we can stay longer, and enjoy the ambience, friendly staff and the locals who frequent this healthy organic establishment. Pizza was great. Even the most antivegetarian in our group enjoyed the pizzas we ordered. Service was slow but we were told that they were under staffed that day. Ambience was exotic. The restroom is worth the visit. lol. The prices however- sigh- will be the reason we wouldn't return. The rest of our order was sub par (soup especially) and I definitely wouldn't want to pay those prices again for food that I had to convince myself to eat because it was pricy. read more

Passing through Pacific Grove and found this place. Walking in I knew I felt at home. Welcoming atmosphere, good vibes, good food, good people. My favorite place.
