I get carry out here, frequently! I enjoy the chicken and steak tacos and I always get double rice cause I don't like beans. I love how each to-go order comes with chips, white sauce + salsa! Went here for lunch in the middle of working, it's a bit in the middle of nowhere. Even so, the service is impeccable. I usually rate 5* for good service and great food, but I wish I could give 6* for this place. Aside from the great service from Able, our server, and the delicious food, the atmosphere was spot on. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that was so authentic that more than half the clientele spoke exclusively Spanish. My burrito was full of chicken and shrimp and smothered in cheese sauce, which I love, and everything was seasoned perfectly. I want to come back for dinner sometime so I can get a drink. I usually come in here and usually the service is pretty decent but tonight it was terrible. My waiter (Juvenal Murillo) who has served me before ended up seating me but took forever to come by to take my order so I had to ask another waiter to. He eventually came out but it was too late. My food came out and not once did he come by to check on me for a refill on water, extra napkins, etc. I paid for the check and expressed my concerns to the cashier and she didn't seem really seem to care, her apology was not genuine. I should not have tipped anything but I know how the restaurant industry works. The customer service needs to be better for some servers! read more

Have been here a few times and I really enjoy the food. The building is like a small home and gives nice warm vibes inside. I really do enjoy coming here to catch up with my friends and have some good Mexican dishes. Their drink menu has a few good items to check out as well. The service is quick and friendly. Hands down the best Mexican food that I've had in Richmond. The sauces were absolutely amazing and the chicken in both my enchilada and burrito was so tender and delicious. El Caporal is a small place that at one time was a Long John Silvers. The decor was very nice, very ethnic, which I absolutely loved. I had the Burrito Macho Esteban, a large burrito with steak and chorizo with the usual vegetables added. There was enough heat to make it super good. My husband had the Tacos al Pastor, which he said was good. The jumbo margaritas earn their name. They are huge! As for the service, our server was very friendly and attentive. I guess because it's so small, food comes out pretty quickly. I would return here, although it is not my favorite Mexican restaurant in RVA. read more

El Caporal is my new favorite Mexican restaurant in Richmond. The service is awesome, the food is awesome, EVERYTHING IS AWESOMEEEEE! Sometimes there is a wait to get a table as it's a smaller restaurant than other places around town. However, the wait is never that long and it's worth it even if it is. I love that the complimentary chips comes with both the salsa and the white sauce. Everything I've tried on the menu has been delicious (the fajitas, chicken encebollado, burrito Kevin, carnitas) and leaves you full and satisfied. The portions are huge and enough for you to take home leftovers for a second meal. The food comes out quick and piping hot. Giving it a 4 because the appetizer wings were small and underwhelming and the chicken Sammy was really salty. It was so a bit difficult to flag down someone for any extra napkins/utensils/the check on occasion. They're usually really good about that. read more

This is by far one of the best Mexican restaurants I have ever been to and I have been to a lot. #1 THE FOOD. I got the quesadilla fajita. This was stuffed with grilled chicken, green peppers, red onion, tomatoes and it was layered with melted, creamy cheese. Every bite of the food just melted in my mouth. #2) The Atmosphere. It was just the right size, lively, friendly, and busy with lots of happy customers. #3) The Service. We never had to wait for anything. Perfect service, they were all so kind. My brother comes here with his family and likes it but I had never tried it. So DH and I finally decided to stop in for lunch on a Saturday. We arrived in the nick of time as within 10 minutes of our arrival, the placed was packed, so it is obviously very popular. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and seated promptly, along with some chips and salsa and queso. They have a large menu but we focused on the lunch specials. DH ordered a combo and I ordered the lunch sized carnitas. Our orders arrived pretty quickly. For a lunch sized plate, that was a pretty hefty serving of carnitas! Delicious too. Tender and full of flavor. I could not finish my plate and had to bring it home. DH liked his lunch too. Service was attentive and friendly too. My guess is that we will be back! read more

Excellent food and service!! All the comforts of what you'd expect from a family owned authentic Mexican restaurant. Hot house made tortilla chips, yummy salsa with a kick (but not too spicy), and a menu full of tasty dishes for either lunch or dinner. Lunch prices are cheaper but they don't skimp on portions. Queso blanco is one of our personal favs to add to any dish and The Burrito Asado with steak is the dish we keep ordering... simple, cheesy and delicious. It's small and very busy, but now I see why. I've visited here twice within the last two weeks! Man oh man! I love their food. Probably one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. The first time I visited, seating was really quick but I believe that we got there before the lunch crowd. You receive complimentary chips and salsa which are extremely good. I ordered 2 chicken (shredded) enchiladas with queso and rice. The food came out pretty fast, and fresh. The other time I ordered was a chicken burrito (grilled) with queso on top and rice. This itty-bitty Mexican spot does not mess around. Waiters have always been super friendly, though incredibly busy. It's a small space that is almost always packed, but, amazingly, I've never had to wait for a table. If you like queso, and who doesn't like queso, get the queso with chorizo. It will blow your mind. I kept the practically empty dish so I could drain it into my rice. Others may have laughed, but it was totally worth it. I also discovered one of my new favorite dishes here- the enchiladas nortena. Delicious, juicy shredded pork with peppers overs cheese enchiladas with rice and guacamole. This is now for sure one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. read more
