"Super" shrimp burrito very disappointing. The shrimp was very bland. It was supposed to be 'sauteed". The whole burrito was pretty much flavorless. Rice & bean had no kick to it. I realized their pico de gallo contains excessive amounts of chopped bell peppers which I find very odd. It didn't add much flavor to the burroto except add unecessary crunch. I had to pick them out piece by piece. This used to be my go to place to get a burrito. The shrimp burrito had real flavor back then. I could eat it 5 days a week & not be bored. Now with new operations in place, things are very different. I hardly come here now. How I still remember those good ol days. Give an extra star for the complimentary tastety chips. They have gotten my order wrong twice! I've been going here for years and have loved it. However, lately they have gotten my order wrong twice. Two weeks ago I ordered 2 vegetarian super tacos. I took them back to my office. I was disappointed to see that they were not super. No sour cream, cheese, or guacamole! Just vegetables. Today I ordered a super vegetarian burrito. It came with no cheese, sour cream or guacamole. No beans either. I specifically asked for refried. On both occasions, taking the orders back would have made me late for meetings. For the price of one bowl of pho, you can get a GIGANTIC burrito enough for 2 meals. Skeptical? Yup, I was too... Over 2.5 years ago, when first I moved to the public sector, some of my co-workers raved about this taqueria in the TL. After having an awful case of food poisoning, I was weary of taquerias especially one that was located in the TL. Plus, back then I wasn't an avid Yelper, so it didn't even dawn on me to Yelp it. So while my co-workers would grab a burrito at El Castillito, I would go to Saigon Sandwich at the corner to grab a banh mi. FAST FORWARD 2.5 YEARS... I owed one of my friends dinner and he wanted a burrito, so after a quick Yelp search it led me to El Castillito. It was close to my work and with an overall 4 Star Rating, I thought I give that a shot. As per Yelper's recommendations, I got an Al Pastor Wet Super Burrito (burrito smothered in a red chili sauce, topped with melted shredded cheese, sour cream and slices of avocado). It came with free chips and salsa. The total was just ~$7.50! I had to carry the heavy box with two hands so my clumsy self wouldn't drop it. I later get a text from him saying, "Where did you get that burrito? It was the BEST burrito I've ever had!" Ok, now my suspicions were alleviated. This was 2 weeks ago and since then I've come to El Castillito twice for their Lengua Burrito. I get it with no beans and with avocado. For just $6.04 (including tax), I have two mouth-watering, coma-inducing meals. The seasoned rice is al-dente, yet soft and the accoutrements of pico de gallo and cilantro gives the burrito moisture with a burst of freshness while the thick slices of avocado add a layer of butteryness. Being a muscle, lengua can often be tough and chewy. If cooked properly, lengua should be soft and more tender than a fine filet mignon. So, lengua is normally my go-to meat to test how well a taqueria can prepare and cook their meat. The braised lengua at El Castillito BEATS the one from El Farolito, Pacho Villa, El Toro, and Taqueria Guadalajara; just to name a few. And it's second best to the lengua at La Taqueria which is much pricier at smaller portions. So, if you're a lengua fanatic like myself, you MUST try the lengua burrito at El Castillito! The tortilla chips are nothing to rave about as they taste store bought, BUT make sure to grab several containers of the Salsa Verde--it's like liquid crack! The salsa verde is fresh, rich and creamy from the small bits of avocado and adds a nice, mild kick to your burrito. We came here because it was close to our hotel and we didnt feel like going somewhere that far. Pretty empty on sunday lunch, only had a few customers inside. Menu isnt that large but food is yummy. We ordered a wheat tortilla vegetarian burrito & a wheat tortilla lengua burrito. The lengua super burrito was huge and i was only able to eat half of it. There were large chunks of moist lengua in every bite, and the burrito wasnt too salty or anything at all. I would definitely come here again if i was in this area. A nice medium size taqueria restaurant in the Civic Center and Tenderloin district. Well lit taqueria with plenty of tables and chairs to devour your meal. Parking will be tough, so I would suggest other means of arrival. (walking or public trans) Also the neighborhood can get sketchy cause you will be on the boarder line of the TL district. So lunch time eats would be the safer time. They have a good size menu from all the basics-tacos, burritos, tortas and plate dishes. From carne asada (steak), carnitas (pork), camarones (shrimp), pescado frito (fried fish), lengua (tongue) and veggies. Good size portions and made to order. I love the fact that they use whole avocado slices and not guacamole. Whole avocados are more tastier, I already have salsa in my burritos don't want to double it up in a guacamole. I had a super carne asada burrito, meat cooked just right and flavorful rice and beans. Authentic Mexican food around the TL district, so if you can make it down to the Mission district, next best thing to satisfy your taqueria desires. We went to this restaurant during the Pride parade and it was one of the very few places that accepts credit cards because I usually don't carry cash. The line was pretty long, about 10 minutes. The burritos are what they are known for and I decided to get the breakfast burrito and had it cooked spicy. The burrito itself was AMAZING. They also give you free chips and the salsa verde was spicy which was perfect! Although the only negative experience I had was that they messed up on my transaction and charged me for the wrong thing. Overall, I recommend this place and try their burritos! He likes Mexican food and Matt, who has eaten here a couple of times, will introduce this place to him We were here at around 12:30, and the line wasn't too bad with 5 "HUNGRY" people ahead of us. The line moved at a steady pace. The worker gave us some fresh chips and salsa. Surprisingly, there were plenty of seats in the dining area during lunchtime. Matt ordered a Carne Asada Quesadillia Suiza and a can of Sunkist for $5.75 total for the meal. The Quesadillia was very oily, but the meat was tasty and wasn't burnt like other taquerias. Co-worker ordered the Carnitas regular burrito. Considerring it is JUST a regular burrito, it is a pretty good size, and the Pork, likewise wasn't burnt, but was very tasty. Today I spent 5 HOURS trying to get Hamilton tickets for my mother in a different city. I succeeded only after calling and texting her and double checking dates, times, seating arrangements, are the seats near the aisle? blah blah blah. 5 hours later, she was finally satisfied and my beautiful boyfriend took me out of the house. Have been a regular here for years. Will never come again due to owners bad attitude and credit card minimum. I have always paid cash but was in a hurry and didn't have some money so figured I would use my debit card. Was told by the cashier that they had a $10 minimum. I explained that the food was made and if they didn't take the good it would be their loss. The owner walked in, and I said to him that I had been a regular at his business for nearly 20 years and he still would not waive the minimum. I love that some of the cheapest places in San Francisco have the most to offer in terms of deliciousness. A friend recommended this spot, so I'd figure why not? The best way to describe this place is cozy, modest, and flavorful. I ordered the Super Burrito which comes with rice, beans, onions, cilantro, cheese, avocado, sour cream, and your choice of meat. I went straight for the carne asada. Other possibilities include pastor, regular pollo, pollo asado, chorizo, lengua (beef tongue), carnitas, pollo en salsa verde, and cabeza (beef head). As I saw the line cook construct this burrito behemoth, I couldn't help but stand back in awe... and drool. The burrito itself only costs $6.43 which is a pretty sweet deal considering the fact that I was only able to eat half of it before sitting back in defeat. I was literally satiated until the next day. Some tips: 1. If you plan to get a drink, I'd either recommend the Mexican soda or fresh fruit drinks that are made with an actual juicer. 2. This restaurant is conveniently located close to the Asian Art Museum. If you plan on going there, I'd say skip to overpriced sandwiches at their cafe and head on over here to get some major munch on. 3. At first, I didn't have very good feelings about this place, but I've grown to love it. Whenever I'm at work starving and craving for Mexican food, I automatically think of here. Im a sucker for chicken so I always get a regular burrito with grilled chicken, black beans, salsa, lettuce, and hot sauce. Their burritos aren't super skinny with layers of folded tortilla like you may see at some other places nor are they dry with grains of rice falling onto your lap with every bite. If you'd like, you get a handfull of tortilla chips tossed into your bag, enough to have a chip with almost every huge bite of deliciousness. You can also grab a little bit of red or green salsa. I can't finish a burrito to myself so I always eat half for lunch and the other half for dinner. My dinner portion is always as tasty as the lunch portion. Bout 8 bucks for 2 meals, not bad! There's a good quantity of meats to can choose from and a few different types of tortillas too. Oh, try the nachos. They pile everything on! Lunchtime, Monday thru Friday, the place is always pretty busy from all of the construction workers and the surrounding city workers, but the line moves quite quickly. read more

With limited options around the area and a craving for something heavy, I passed up my usual 3 spring rolls for Mexican food. I was contemplating between the cheese quesadilla or the carnitas and cheese quesadilla and the meat and cheese won. Visiting San Francisco (and the US), I've made it a goal to visit as many taquerias as possible. No where else have I had such good Mexican food (though I haven't been to South America yet!). Unfortunately, I didn't feel this restaurant lived up to the standard in other places around town. Firstly, the area is not the best. I can't blame the restaurant for that but it would be much nicer if they took card. There's currently a cash machine by the entrance but since it's not from a brand bank (and once again since the area doesn't feel the safest), I don't feel especially comfortable taking money out. Regarding the food: I was recommended to try the California burrito-which I did-but I wasn't satisfied. It tasted pretty bland. The portions where big so that's a benefit I guess. What really put me off though, was the apparent hygiene and sanitary standards. To get the nachos, clients themselves grab a little bucket of chips from a pile of these buckets. You inevitably touch other people's and this could be instantly improved by just handing it to people. Someone else's review also mentioned a cockroach or something. I don't think this is too crazy considering the look of the place. I think a deep clean is in order. The staff were nice and helpful though, a redeeming feature of the restaurant.
