Tried this place for the first time because my sister raves about the menudo, so here we came. First things first though: the chairs. Chairs have small seats so a wide bodied person like me won't find it comfortable after 30 minutes and it's stressful wondering how long the chair will support a big body before breaking apart. There are booths with tables that move so I HIGHLY recommend that big and wide bodies sit at a booth. They started us off with the traditional chips and salsa. I loved these! The chips are thick and don't scratch your gums, the salsa is spicy so take care if you're not into spice! I ordered the ground beef enchilada combo with rice and beans, my sister ordered three tacos combo. My enchiladas were on the bland side but the rice and beans were fantastic! My sister's beef tacos were tasty so I don't know where the discrepancy between her food and mine was, but it's not enough to deter me from a return visit. Food portions are big so you won't leave hungry. Wait staff cleaned tables immediately after departing patrons, even removing our dishes while we chatted. I REALLY like that attention to detail. So it's been pretty rough in downtown Glendale losing a couple of Mexican restaurants that had been around for decades like La Perla and Pedros so when we discovered El Charrito we had to check it out. Beware that parking is pretty limited here. Their food is excellent and definitely challenging to finish because there is just so much food! Also, the margaritas plenty strong! The isn't much fuss about it, and they're isn't a need, the food was great. I did catch sight of an ad for a $7.50 bucket of Corona (we'll b back for this)! Only downside for me was, the huevos rancheros red sauce had an aroma of seafood this morning. Also, there is an additional charge for extra chips & salsa. One of my all time favorite Mexican joints. True to the name, authentic and so rich in flavor. In fact I went with a group of 8 and each one of us got a bowl of menudo. White and red, they serve it everyday. So yummy! Even in this Arizona heat, it'll keep you craving menudo & something light; ceviche. Well first the service is not great... Mostly because it appears to only have 1 main waitress and the other girl seems to clean tables and serve chips. But the waitress is friendly, it is bigger inside than what it appears outside... A little on the dark side. Restroom needs upgrading but it was clean which is always a plus. The only reason why I am giving it 2 stars is because this was our go to spot for quick fix of mexican food for about 2 years. Then we found a piece of gum in our salad! There was no way it was my gum and it was chewed. I threw up as soon as i realized it was gum and I had chewed it. I was so sad and upset because i felt like it was done on purpose by someone in their kitchen and its not right. I went back to tell them and the manager had the nerve to deny it and try to blame me. She even rolled her eyes. There is not reason for me to make this up. Even if it was not her fault, as a manager I would have expected her to apologize and try to say something nicer. The mission: good Mexican food in Glendale. Should be like shooting fish in a barrel, right? You'd be surprised how much mediocre and downright bad Mexican food there is on the West Side. Not only that, but I like a place with table service and booze, and if my server speaks English, or at least as much of it as I speak Spanish - that's a bonus. We'll meet halfway. I was a little anxious about trying El Charrito. I had only found reviews on less-trustworthy sites than Yelp, and they have a website -- a pretty nice one at that. Seems like places with great downhome cooking don't have websites, and if they do, they're crappy. However, El Charrito surprised me. I have been to Caramba, across the street, many times, and never noticed El Charrito. It's between a tattoo shop and something unremarkable. Inside, it's brightly painted, yet cozy, due to the low ceilings and dim lighting. Seating is mostly booths, which I dig. There is also a bar. The two big TVs were showing wrestling and Good Evening Arizona. Our friend was already at the table, so we joined her and immediately plowed into the chips. OMG. They were so light and crisp. Not as warm as I would like. But so light. The salsa, well... it was the traditional style, and just salty, not very spicy or otherwise flavorful. The menu features all your traditional favorites, plus some more upscale options such as mojo garlic shrimp and chicken mole. I also noted some specials that looked promising, like a grilled fish with spinach. When it came time to order, we had some communication issues with our server. But we got through it, thanks to the universal language of food and lots of hand signs. I ordered a Negra Modelo and the pollo asado. It looked really good, and the portions were generous. It came with a huge salad (nothing fancy, just your usual iceberg, tomatoes, etc.), a pool of refried bean, and fries. I was so down with having fries instead of rice. The chicken was salty and yummy, but the white meat was a bit dry. The beans were kind of thin and pale. But I don't care too much for refried beans anyway. All in all, it was pretty good. My dining companions demolished their chimis, so I assume they were good. I'm thinking next time I'll order a special, or maybe one of the more popular dishes. I would call this adventure a success! Sort of dark I thought but maybe because the bar is a prominent part of the interior. Service is so so. Not many customers for a weekday lunch. We chose this restuarant after an reviewing an article identifying this restaurant as one of the top authentic Mexican Restaurants in the Phoenix area. Upon walking in you seat yourself, the waitress was prompt and polite with taking our drink order. We went at about 5pm on a Saturday afternoon and there were only three other tables with patrons. Upon taking the drink order we let the waitress know we would need a few extra minutes to make a decision. The waitress did not come back for about 20 minutes...mind you it was not busy. She was on her phone at the bar most of that time. We had finished our drinks at the time she took our order. She didn't ask again for refills until the food came out another 15- 20 minutes later. The only time she was friendly was when she first greeted us or took our money for the meal. It seemed as if we were more of an inconvenience for her than anything. While the food was average, there was nothing special about it, but it wasn't bad. The service was awful. I would not recommend this restaurant and would offer as a suggestion to try another location such as Popo's or Tia Rosa's in the east valley. I was pleasantly surprised after walking through the door to see a rather large and clean dining area with ceramic tile floors. My server brought a basket of chips with salsa along with their menu. The salsa was very good with just a slight heat and chips were hot and homemade. I am excited know and order 2 enchiladas, 1 beef and 1 chicken with rice and beans. I also ordered a hard shredded beef taco on the side. My server was very prompt and accommodating with my food served in just a few minutes. Looking good! First bite was the chicken enchilada, oh no, bland boiled chicken wrapped in a corn tortilla topped with canned tomato sauce, no flavor except the cheese was good. The beef enchilada's waterlogged beef was also flavorless. Now for the taco which also had the water soaked beef that had the shell falling apart. I tried to doctor the dishes with their good salsa, table shaker chili flakes and oregano but their meats needed more love during the cooking to be right. Our family of 7 can get out for under $25 if we don't get drinks and order everything ala carte.
