By far the best Mexican food I have had in this area. We ordered enchiladas verde, and a chipotle chicken burrito with guacamole. When my burrito came out, the waiter apologized that the cook had forgotten the guacamole, but it would be out soon. At that point, we became aware of the fact that he was making it fresh, to order. I'm hard pressed to recall better tasting guac. The burrito itself was incredible. I often feel that if I ask for something to have spice at an ethnic restaurant (Thai, Indian, Mexican, etc), the request is taken with a grain of salt (I'm preeeeettty white). Here, I ordered something that should be spicy, and it. Was. PERFECT. Present but not overwhelming heat that built with every bite, and rich creamy flavor. Everything I want in a chipotle sauce. I didn't try the wife's enchiladas, but I've been assured they were supreme as well. Everything here is scratch made, and it shows. The best part is that it is a true family atmosphere. When we walked in, we were told by our waiter to sit "wherever we liked," and the owner/cook quickly quipped "just not in the kitchen!" A wonderful family who takes very evident pride in what they do. Also of note, unlike many other restaurants that are long on ambiance and kitsch but short on flavor, the restaurant was comfortable but could pass for a steakhouse, burger joint, cafe, or Mexican restaurant. But as soon as we took a bite of the food, it became obvious that El Charro is the real deal. We'll be back. read more

We enjoyed our first visit here. My husband and both enjoyed the classic breakfast plate. The bacon was a tad crispy for my taste, but perfect for my husband's. I loved the sausage patty and sausage gravy, which I eat over my hash browns. The hash browns were crispy throughout, and very tasty. We will be back! read more

Let's start by saying the customer service was well. The atmosphere was very kind and welcoming. We ordered a range of different dishes, wet burrito, chicken fajitas, ceviche tostada, pozole and burger meal for the kids. The food was okay, fries a bit over salted and the pozole was a no go for me. I tried the pozole and it was too thick of a consistency, the smell and taste was only oregano and the meat looked mushy. The ceviche tostada I enjoyed and the chicken fajitas my husband liked as well he got them extra spicy and this is the first time a restaurant delivered on the spicy. We will give it a try again in the future order something different, definetly will update in the future. read more

Best shrimp cocktail and micheladas around. The other stuff is good too, but I can't pass up an opportunity to get those 2 items when I come here because my stomach space is limited and that meal and drink leave me bursting full and very happy to be alive . We have never had a bad dish and we come here at least every week. Every one we know loves El Charro. I highly recommend you check them out. They are closed on Tuesdays. I would give it zero stars if I could. Food was awful the best part about this place was the water, the beans were dry and tasted old, my husbands wet burrito wasn't very wet, my chili relleno looked like an omelet had so much egg, my plate was full of grease from the mole sauce. It's like if the county jail made Mexico food this is what you would get. read more

As local caterers, we are pretty picky in our places to eat. I had seen a friend's post on Facebook about El Charro, and decided that after a catering delivery, we would give it a try. I had the chilequiles with green sauce, and they were very good, spicy, but good. If you can't handle heat, go with the red sauce. My husband had the Chile verde tamale, and it also was pretty tasty! The masa was creamy and moist - I'm not a fan of dry masa, that is why I would not normally order tamales, but I would definitely try one at El Charro. I didn't find the food salty at all as mentioned in an earlier review, and I am super sensitive to salt. Service was great, and they seem to be quite busy. We will definitely be back! Can't wait to try the dinner selections. read more

Unfortunately this business was forced to move from Woodlake to Tulare and we miss it oh so much! Best Mexican food we have ever had. The Coctel de camarones, micheladas, beef fajitas, seafood smothered burrito, asada and chicken fajitas all leave you wanting more. This cafe is pretty good, I had a veggie enchilada plate and it was delish! There were a few vegetarian options, which isn't too common in Tulare. The service was nice, very relaxed 'cafe' feel. They specialize in Mexican food, and have a lot of homemade items on the menu. The prices aren't bad at all, most dishes are under $10! Rather than going to iHop or Denny's, check this place out! Went in for breakfast, 5 of us in total. We ordered breakfast. I ordered chili verde with eggs. Chili Verde was ok, kind of bitter. Potatoes were salty! Everybody in the party said too salty. Tortillas were homemade and good. My dad had the machaca with eggs, he said it was ok. Mom had eggs a la mexicana, she said it was good. Hubby had chilaquiles, he did not like them. Overall good service. Coffee was warm, not hot. This may be something in the future, from what I understand they used to be located in woodlake? Been here several times and have never been disappointed. Priced right and always friendly service. Green enchiladas and tacos de lengua are my favorites. Only issue I have is I think the dinner plates are a little stingy with rice and beans compared to similar restaurants. Still, one of the best Mexican restaurants in town. read more

This place is great! The food taste great with an unbeatable price. The areas includes a diner and is fitted with western decor. It's busier on the weekends. It's a great place for breakfast. Traveling to L.A. area via hwy 99. Stopped here for a late lunch--so glad we did! Very welcoming and clean. Owners are extremely accommodating and offered extra tortillas and salsas. Husband and I both ordered the Chile relleno plate which is made with a fresh poblano without flour, dipped in egg and cooked on a grill. So light and delicious! Lots of vegetarian options. We had a wonderful meal at El Charro Cafe. We went for dinner and were told we could order breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The chef and his wife were so very friendly and personable. We ordered huevos rancheros x 2 (both of our guests had nothing left on the plate at the end) and chilaquiles and enchiladas verdes, a burrito, and menudo. Everything was outstanding and clearly made from scratch. The beans and rice are so flavorful with just the right amount of seasoning. The salsa and chips were yummy and the chips were still warm and perfectly crisp when we were served. My father was so excited about the menudo which was fabulous and which he gobbled down. Enchiladas and burritos were really tasty and then we topped it all off with homemade pie. read more

So tasty! The enchiladas are practically made to order! You can have them your way!! The young waiter told me I could have them with chicken, with carne asada, ground beef or any other meat on the menu. The sauces as well, one red one green, 2 red or 1 green, mole or?? I chose the traditional red with ground beef, they were really very good! It's a diner and I came in with minimal expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised and pleased. We have a new favorite Mexican restaurant. We were searching yelp for a new restaurant and we stumbled on this one. Upon entrance we were highly impressed with the welcoming greeting we received. This restaurant was spotless, both the dining room and bathrooms were impressively clean. I love supporting local businesses so I was pleased to see this is a local family ran restaurant.The food was great and they offer a great variety. I ordered the veggie enchiladas and about fell out of my chair when she asked me what sauce I wanted. When I questioned she replied with. Would you like green sauce, red sauce or mole. My wife ordered flautas and she was extremely surprised to find cheese inside. That's the first time we've ever encountered that and she loved it.I have been eating less meat trying to focus more on a plant-based diet and I could not believe the options they had for veggie dishes. Most restaurants will have one but they offered it in many different varieties. I highly recommend this restaurant. Give them a chance you will not be disappointed.
