Have grown up on El Charro. I love their fajitas and their queso. I can always go for a pound of chips and a pint of salsa to go. Yummy!!!

SO dissapointed with the service we received at the Fraser location while picking up our carryout tonight. We were waiting to be helped when the male employee who was working the carryout operation read something from our order and proceeded to refer to my mom (whose name the order was under) as an asshole, in front of an entire group of customers. Luckily my dad was picking the food up and when he confronted the employee on why he called my mom an asshole, his excuse was that the food had been sitting here for a while and he "he didn't really mean it" (guessing he didn't expect us to hear him refer to my mom that way). Our order was to be ready for pick up at 6:30pm, we got a text at 7:45pm stating it was ready and we were at El Charro Fraser by 8pm. We had no intention of complaining in regards to the delay as we understand how crazy today probably was and we just appreciated that the restaurant was open. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if this employee expected us to be waiting in the parking lot for an hour and 15 minutes or if the restaurant staff didn't text us in a reasonable enough time to his standards to let us know the order was ready. Regardless, this does not give any business the right to call a customer an asshole for no reason. It's so disappointing because we love El Charro and tonight's dinner was great but we will no longer be supporting a business that treats loyal customers poorly. read more

El Charro has been one of my favorite places for as long as I can remember. I recommend the beef puffy tacos, they are unreal! Once you try them you will crave more! They also bought free chips along with house made mild and spicy salsa. I love when you don't have to pay extra for them at Mexican restaurants. read more

For the area this is a great family style Mexican restaurant. Their portions are large and well made, I tried a combo dish and was satisfied with each item. Service and quality is great. You can easily find better Mexican elsewhere, but I'm not so sure I would take children to those areas. El Charro does the trick. read more

This is the flagship El Charro location, and oh boy do they make some good Mexican food. Authentic? Who knows, but it's amazing! I usually get the "Unique Soft Shell Taco Dinner". The tacos are made of soft shells, but the shells are deep-fried. You might be asking "well, isn't that just a hard-shell taco?" No, it's not--it's different but kind of hard to explain how. You'll just have to try them. I promise you won't be disappointed. Try to call-ahead for seating, as they usually get pretty packed. read more

My family started going to El Charro back when it was a tiny hole in the wall at the original location in Fraser. It's always been a family favorite, and I always try to squeeze in a stop when I'm back at home. Like others have noted, it's not the most authentic, but the food is always good and the portions are generous. I can't think of anything I've had here that I disliked. My favorites are the botana, soft shell tacos, and enchiladas (get fries to dip in the enchilada sauce!), but everything is tasty. I cannot believe all the negative, pretentious reviews of this place. We have been going to El Charro for my entire 30-year-life, and always love it. We have never had issues with service. We like the two salsas they give, but the spicier one is our favorite. One suggestion that I saw on another post would be for them to have white queso dip. Their queso is served in a large cast iron "bowl" and has chorizo, tomatoes, etc- not what we wanted! But the beef puffy tacos are my absolute favorite! I usually am good with one taco and chips/salsa for a decently filling meal. Is this place authentic? Not quite. Is it delicious? yes! It's definitely not fancy, but is more upscale than the typical hole in the wall joints. I truly don't understand all the negative reviews. We have enjoyed this place for decades, and now my husband and children request it anytime we are in town. read more

I'm not sure what happened to El Charro, but it was probably the most bland, tasteless, uninspired Mexican food I've had in ages. Chicken tasted like the flavor was boiled out of it, the rice was without flavor and re fried beans tasted like wallpaper paste. I was so disappointed and so were my grandsons. I haven't been to El Charro's in years, I too remember when it was in that little strip mall. I've been to the new place quite a few times too, went again last night. The unique soft shell tacos is the reason I go, they are still delicious and quite filling, I think I can eat three but always bring one home, very attentive service, drink refills were brought without asking, I always appreciate that. Service was quick and all our orders were prepare as we asked. I think I remember the salsa as being better before, in the old place it was in a squeeze bottle (home made but in a bottle). There were 4 of us and it came out to about eighty bucks, ... Im thinking going forward El Charro's will be date night for my wife and I. read more

The customers there were laughing at me for no reason and after my meal I went outside and they tried hitting me with their car after they waiting 20 minutes in the parking lot for me to come out!!! I saw Jacob Sartorius' twin he was also very LOUD! These 2 girls (the ones that tried to run me over) were screaming laughing the whole time and trying to take photos of me!!! I went to go to the bathroom and ended up outside so I went back in and got completely lost I'm pretty sure I'm STILL there!!! The food was difficult to eat but I managed to eat it. There was a scary baby that kept banging her head and staring at me!!! I would not recommend going if you are easily laughed at, messy eaters, or you get lost easily! read more

Sorry...I have been going to this place since they were a little restaurant on Garfield, when I was a kid. It was ALWAYS excellent. Last night I ordered the fajitas, and it was the poorest presentation and most pathetic portion of that dish I have ever seen. Not to mention still a $15.00 dish. Absolute rip off. I placed an online carry out order this evening. Received an email confirmation indicating the time my order should be ready and instructions to wait in my car until I receive a text message that my order is ready. I arrived at the restaurant and parked to wait for the text message. At about 10 minutes past the time it had given on the email, still no text message. I wondered if perhaps I had typed my phone number incorrectly when ordering. I walked to the door to go in to see if my order was ready and there were 2 signs on the door letting people know they should wait in their cars for a text message. So I returned to my car. After another probably 10 minutes, now about 15 minutes before they closed, I called them on the phone and told them I was waiting on a carry out order. The person who answered the phone told me people were not receiving texts tonight and I should just go inside to pick it up. Seriously?!?!?! My phone number is on my receipt! If they knew that people were not receiving text messages tonight, take the signs off the door, or better yet, place a phone call instead. Instead, my order likely sat there at least 20 minutes based on its temperature when I got it home. Had I sat there waiting for my text for another 15 minutes, would they have closed up for the night, charged my credit card, and tossed my food? Some manager really dropped the ball tonight in their apparent lack of ability to troubleshoot this one! Gotta do better if you want people to help you get through these rough times (at least for restaurants in MI). read more

The food is mediocre and the portions are very small for the prices. I ordered the wet burrito. It was one burrito about the size of a small enchilada served with rice and beans. The rice was about a tablespoon full that was spread out across the plate to look like more than it was. Same with the beans a very small amount spread out. Rice and beans are very inexpensive. Food was taco bell quality. Cost over $44 for my friend to have 1 entree 1 appetizer 1 margarita and 1 dessert. I had nothing because the online menu and the restaurant menu were different and what I found online that I could eat was not available. Will never go again. It was terrible. read more

We have been going here for a couple of years. Their soft shell tacos are a must try. We enjoy their bottomless chips and salsa. I had issues with a rude server and called the manager later to discuss it, he was very apologetic and I was completely reimbursed for our meal. read more

A native to Metro Detroit, I have always enjoyed food from El Charro. Went this past weekend and enjoyed a dinner with a friend and we both were very pleased with our food. Chips were nice and fresh, and the salsa was tasty. My food came in decent time and my "soft" tacos were just how I like them. Place is clean. I like the fajitas but i wish they were still sizzling. It just comes on a plate (which i find weird) everyone loves there soft tacos, i find them semi bland, not to much flavor. I ordered a Margarita sampler. The picture makes it look like shot glasses. But it was almost a rocks glass and it was 10$!!! If i would of known that i would of said no. I love the chips and salsa though. Never really had a bad experience but never had a great one either. read more
