We've lived here 20 years and never tried this place. Now we have, & won't be back. Waitress was fine, which is to be expected when we were the only customers there (mid-afternoon). Fish was so tough it cut and chewed like overcooked chicken ( but tasted like fish). "Sides" rice & beans were 75% of the plate. Rice was yellow, but if there was saffron in it you couldn't tell. I walked in during happy hour and there wasn't a large crowd. I proceeded to order a Michelada, thinking about the TEN other Mexican restaurants that had never heard of the drink. We were looking for a healthy and cheap meal for two and we just happened to be in the area and spotted this place on the corner of the shopping center. The menu is a bit overwhelming with lots of options! I saw a pick of the Picadero sampler for $26.95 and thought that was definitely the plate for us. For people working on eating healthy, this was a good plate to choose. The portion served is big enough for two people with chicken, beef and shrimp with veggies and yucca. Not a bad deal. Surprisingly the food was great. My wife and I went here to satisfy our craving for Mexican. Come to find out they offered Mexican cuisine and Salvadoran cuisine. I was excited to try something new. I ordered the Pollo a la Crema. Best choice I could have made. The dish was on point. The service was spot on. They provided friendly interactions and frequently checked on my guest and I to ensure our drinks were taken care of. The chips and salsa were fresh. The salsa had a little spice, just how I like it. I've eaten here pretty often since I work down the road and because Laurel doesn't have a whole lot to offer other than fast food/chain restaurants, this place is a good spot. There's never too many people in here during lunch time but, I notice the 2 full bars, sweet juke box and, the projector and screen...so, i'm sure this place gets bumpin' in the night. the food is always consistent and taste good, always a plus for me. mixed pupusas are the jam! We stumbled across this place tonight, and thoroughly enjoyed the food. I had the flautas dinner combo, which was a lot of food for only $9. The refried beans were just the right consistency, guacamole and pico tasted fresh, and it wasn't overly salty. My boyfriend ordered a huge steak, and he said it was seasoned and cooked well. Overall, the food was delicious and well priced. Only the decor and bathroom left something to be desired. I was kind of scared to touch anything in the ladies room. Eat in DONT get carry out. I've been a couple times and the difference in food quality and service is drastic. Eating in, service was prompt, drinks (including alcohol), and food was served quickly but with care. Carry out is another story. Placed my order and the guy said it would take "5 minutes to be ready". Considering I ordered a chicken chimichanga I'm pretty sure it would take longer than 5 minutes to cook and plate the food. Ah, but it wast. Coming in, it took another guy to get the cashier to stop ticking and tacking on his phone to give me my order and still yet I come home and see old guacamole and a burrito not chimichanga, hence the 5 minutes but I was charged for a chimichanga not a burrito. Came here a couple weeks ago and i was very disappointed. Our server was very rude - she acted like she didn't even want to be at work in the first place. Not impressed at all! We ate lunch and wasted $30 on joke-cheese dip, a burrito, and a chimichanga. None of it was good! Not even the chips. Barely seasoned, poor quality, and poorly prepared food. Our cheese dip was regular cheese (almost like mozzarella) mixed with some wet mixture to provoke it to be more of a cheese dip like structure. Epic fail. Salsa is very bland. My shrimp (in chimichanga) were obviously soaked in chlorinated city water for who knows how long. Was truly a waste of $30. Well, I really don't like to give bad reviews, but most of my reviews are usually really good. Last weekend, my family and I went to what used to be our favorite Salvadorian Rest. Were we ever surprised!! The basket of complimentary chips with salsa were half full, like for maybe one person. So we ordered Guacamole, which we knew how we used to receive it on a huge bed of lettuce, piled high with enough guacamole for four people. Boy, were we shocked when the nice waitress set a small (pudding like bowl) size of just guacamole, no lettuce bed, the avocados looked like they had been bleached white. No green color at all!! I was so shocked, I said nothing, but stared at my spouse, whom I knew was thinking the same as me. When my drink, frozen margarita w/salt, arrived, there were two problems, hardly any salt around the rim and I couldn't taste any of the main ingredient, tequila!!!! The others got sodas or beer, so not much could go wrong, except my daughters glass had dried food around the rim of her glass. We called it to the attention of the nice waitress and she immediately changed out the glasses. As a family, we like to order the fajitas & got the mixed chicken, steak and shrimp. when it was all done she brought 2 small platters with beans, rice, salsa, sour cream, and the white guacamole. One plate could have been enough for one person, but we had to share a small amount between the four of us. When we took the top off the tortilla container, my daughter asked for us to smell to see if we could smell any vinegar. Sure enough, the tortillas did smell like vinegar. The meat mixture with cooked onions and peppers were good, except there were only 4 pieces of shrimp. One for each of us! How cheap can you get! Oh, and they stopped making chicken or beef tamales completely! Not on their new menu. Only a corn Tamal is what they serve. In closing, we didn't order anything else to include drinks or dessert. I don't know if the management has changed or they changed Chefs or both? I have noticed a few new people behind the bar, the last few times we went there. Waitresses come and go, but the service on their part has always been good. It's not their fault if there is new management or Chefs. But after, over 8 years of frequently going to this restaurant, I know my family and I won't be back. There are several Salvadorian places we can find. They are not the only one. I'm sorry for them, because for years we had recommended this place to so many of our friends and out of town visitors. They have just missed out on our business and others until I learn the management and/or Chefs have changed. I'm giving a two, because the waitresses were doing their jobs! read more

Randomly craving nachos one night and saw this place had good reviews so I went..so glad I did!! I got food 30 mins before they closed and it was still fresh and tasty! El Charro used to be my wife and my favorite Salvadoran/Mexican restaurant in Laurel. Good prices, good food, good staff. However, the last two times we have gone there, something has happened and the place has taken a definite nosedive. I'm not sure whether the kitchen staff has changed or the management has changed, but something definitely happened. For example: - They used to make their guacamole on site and you could tell. Tonight, it appeared like they got their guac from a cardboard container purchased at Sysco. - They used to have good quality, homemade tortillas. Tonight, it appeared that the tortillas were ancient (they had a vinegar smell that one gets from tortillas that have been stored for too long and have spoiled) And so on. The point being that this place was formerly a very good value, but, based upon the past couple of times that we've gone, there has been something catastrophic that has happened and we won't be back for a long, long time. I hope they can figure out and fix whatever's gone wrong so they can return to their tradition of quality. read more

I go all the time with my family and as far as authentic Mexican close to Howard county this is the best. I love the addition of El Salvadorian food items on the menu such as pupusas, these are must get! They are also like $2 a piece and come with an excellent coleslaw. The margaritas are good, I've had the Cadillac (addition of gran mariner) and regular. I usually order the chicken tacos but I've also had the three different types of enchiladas combination and some queso chicken dish all are very good. The hot sauce here is great as well available in both red and green. Tres leches cake never disappoints but they do not always have it. My last visit with my sister was greatly enjoyable however the entire service was conducted in Spanish, my Spanish is passable at best and I made the waitress aware of this and we worked together on a Spanglish experience. This situation was fine for me but I worry about my parents, who know absolutely no Spanish coming in and trying to order, at least you know the place is definitely authentic! Also, be warned that Sunday nights there is very very loud karaoke and the place can be packed and is packed during any Latin American soccer game.
