The atmosphere has a wonderful Spanish heritage, accompanied by beautiful artwork. The staff has always been incredibly friendly and attentive to their services. Their queso flameado with chorizo is, without a doubt, my favorite among all places I've tried. It's served sizzling, and the cheese is melted perfectly, not thick or cooling down too quickly. I also ordered the carne guisada; the beef was tender and juicy, the sauce was flavorful, and the rice was light and fluffy. We also tried the Texas Burrito, and let me tell you--everything is indeed bigger in Texas! I could barely finish it; it was fully stuffed and packed. The taco carbon was great, with the flour tortilla tasting homemade and the beef fajita perfectly seasoned. The chimichanga came out piping hot, topped with melted cheese, while still maintaining a crispy texture. I will definitely return. Their lunch special is an excellent value! read more

My lunch here last week was a pleasant first time experience for me. El Charro is located in a strip center along the Hwy. 290 frontage road with plenty of parking in front. Inside it has an attractive and festive looking Latin American interior with colorful art and regional decor. They also have a full bar too with pleasant music playing in the background. El Charro offers a regular and lunch menu from which I ordered from. My choice was the chicken fajitas for $11 at the lunch price. Neither of their tortillas are homemade so I chose corn. First to arrive were the chips and red salsa. They were good chips with a tasty warm salsa. Less than 10 minutes later the sizzling platter arrived. The first thing I noticed was the generous amount of meat on the plate especially considering that this was the lunch price. I started with the charro beans and loved the smokey flavor. With plenty of content in the small bowl they were very good. With the plentiful meat on the platter it also had bell peppers and onions and was all very good in taste. My only wish would have been for a little more guac and pico de gallo but the table service during the meal was very attentive. I enjoyed this meal and will be returning to this restaurant when in the area. read more

After having FOOD POISONING, I decided to just try one thing basic, like cheese enchiladas. The manager came out to argue with me about the sauce on the enchiladas. It was a to-go order. I was not allowed to sit at the bar and wait with a drink. Then I was told I could only order with the hostess. WHAT THE HECK. I'm always down to go to a mom and pop place to share the greatness with others on Yelp. We came in and already had a bad feeling about this place because right when you walk in it smells like a gas station toilet. (Sorry but it's true) We decided to have an open mind and give this place a shot.. who knows the food can be great! My dad ordered the beef steak burrito.. me and my mom ordered the Pollo Azteca. Everything came out so fast! I know from previous waitress experience, that is a BAD sign. We were starving and just started eating. Everything was bland and had did not have a good taste. I don't say this often, but I haven't had a bad experience with food at a texmex restaurant in some time... It could have been a bad night or something... I dont know. Salsa solid, chips were eh. The beef fajita for 2 was delicious all around from the meat to the rice and beans. We ordered the HH margarita and it was extremely watered down, had hints of tequila but felt more like drinking water. Have been the go to Mexican restaurant for the past 2 years and even catered an event for us. Managers are too busy or never available to discuss the issues . Something always seems to be missing on the to go orders and always a fight to reimburse original bill. Too many times for us. Good to know plenty of other good restaurants in the area. read more

Went in for a happy hour margarita. Our margaritas came to the table under filled by about an inch. That would be so bad but they were full of air bubbles and not creamy smooth. Had a strong lime flavor but after finishing the drink we didn't feel like we had even had a drink...so mostly fluff. read more

Stopped here for lunch, love some Tex-Mex! Staff was nice, manager was odd/awkward. Let's start out with the food. Ordered a queso, it was like somebody poured some cheese whiz into a bowl and microwaved it, there was a bubble on top, definitely microwave. Side of Pickled jalapeños, large chunks of onion, and one slice of carrot. Dumped that in to the queso to find the carrot, I'm sure it must've accidentally gotten in the mix. Helped a little. Ordered the stuffed avocado with chicken. I took the avocado, my sister took the plate that had two enchiladas, rice and beans, she subbed in one enchilada for the taco. I don't know how to say this other than there was absolutely no flavor. Should've been fajita chicken, but I mainly got a straight mozzarella cheese, nothing else. Added salt and lime juice to give it something. I just stopped because it just wasn't doing it. I love a stuffed avocado, I've had it at multiple restaurants. This is the first time I've ever had it be flavorless. We had ordered churros for dessert, those came and they were piping hot on the outside, but raw and doughy in the middle. I can only assume microwave again, frozen dessert. They would've been good had it not been for the raw middle. Now, enter the manager. He comes over and he seems upset, he tells us this is the first time he's heard of us not liking the food. How they opened a year ago over here, just reopened, and then just tapered off. This is also our first time coming to this restaurant, at this location. We just moved from the other side of Houston. He tells us about how he had previously worked at another location for over 30 years, I'm not sure what that mattered for the way the food was at this location. Didn't do him or us any favors regarding his previous experience. Also stated that all churros were the same? He comped the meal. The waitress came by and told us he had comped the meal, we said we didn't mind paying, but she informed us we were only going to pay for the drinks, then. She brings me the receipt with the food added back on. She brought it back over with the food re-removed, we paid for the drinks and left. Will not be coming back. read more

We tried here last Saturday with some friends who said we had to try their margaritas. Well we have now been back twice!! The margs are awesome but the food is even better. My husband loves the street tacos and I have had the taco salad, enchiladas and quesadillas and thought they all have tasted so good. The service has been great each time and quick which is great with a 1 year old kiddo who usually doesn't last too long when we go out! Will share pics after we go next! We split the mixed fajitas mexicanas for 1 and I have to say they're the best fajitas I've had in a while. Well, hubby and I decided we needed a new Mexican restaurant to try out. I'm so glad we did. I had mixed fajitas for one. Very tasty, they are served with half a lemon so, that citrus hit was nice. Hubby had dinner number 4 and he loved it. He gave me a bite of his cheese enchilada, definitely going back. Staff is very friendly. Restaurant is very clean. The small queso is our test item, if they mess that up, we won't go back. The small queso was fantastic! The salsas...red, very good. The green is different from other restaurants but, I seriously could drink it. It has a slight sweetness to it. We will be going back to check out their lunch menu. Prices are reasonable. read more

Everything here was delicious and affordable..most entrees are around 10-20 bucks which is a good deal . My Alamo plate with fajitas, shrimp, sausage and rice and beans and guacamole salad with tortillas was under 20 bucks..can't beat that and salsa was warm, chips could have been better if warm too but overall a great place to eat. read more

This is the absolute PLACE for Tex Mex. I moved from the CYP 16 years ago and just moved back almost 2 months ago. The original place is off of huffmeister. I am telling you!!! The absolute FRIENDLIEST staff (Martín & Allen), AMAZING food, and I PROMISE the best margs! What IS IT with Cypress and awful margs?! This place DOES NOT use cheap tequila in their mix and it SHOWS here compared elsewhere. Really really REALLY amazing prices! The grande house marg is about 10-11. Sooo amazing! I always add GM to my margs and for my grande it was 13.75! What?!?! Literally! I am coming back once a week from here on out. It's so amazing to see Cypress grow as much as what it has and I'm so happy that this place is about 1 mile down the road from me! The cheese is sooo good and the beef fajita meat is seasoned sooo perfectly. The tortillas are super soft and not sticky or hard. Chips and salsa are hot and hot.
