Though the service was attentive and speedy, we began our food experience with the salsa really letting us down by not having much taste and only hosting a rogue chili which made it inconsistently hot. Things looked up from there as I ordered a vegetarian chile relleno (they were quite accommodating in replacing the refried beans with whole beans). I was traveling with two teenage boys for a wrestling tournament and they were hungry and wanted protein in the form of good food. The servers made sure the boys had a lot of water and chips and salsa. The food was probably some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Fresh, perfect seasoning, and amazing flavor. We got our order to go as I was too tired to go out but sent the husband to pick up the order. For the 4 of us, we ordered a chicken tostada, shredded beef chimichanga dinner plate, cocktail de Cameron and Carde de Pollo. It was our first time to try this place and every dish was delicious! They include chips and salsa with the order. Fresh avocado was tasty in both the cocktail and soup. Very generous with the meats from the shredded beef to the shredded chicken to the shrimp cocktail and chicken in the soup. Can't wait to go again and try the watermelon margaritas! Looking for a delicious Mexican meal with lots of flavor and big portions? Look no further than El Charro Viejo! I was having trouble finding a Mexican food place that was getting good COVID reviews, but Yelp helped me find El Charro Viejo. My husband and I ordered the Carne Asada burrito, the enchiladas verdes with chicken, and a cup of the chicken tortilla soup. We got the order to-go since it was late and they would be closing soon (close to 9pm). When my husband went inside to get the food, the staff was all wearing masks and the folks eating inside were properly socially distanced. The enchiladas were the best I've had in awhile, the verde sauce had so much flavor without being overpowering. The portions were huge too. Lots of flavor, not too spicy, and their salsa is wonderful! I don't like a lot of places salsa, but this one was perfect. It was saucy but not too tomato-y and had a medium spice level. Chips were fresh and crunchy! The only exception here was the tortilla soup, and I believe that's because we got it to go. I bet it would be a lot better if ordered at the restaurant. I moved from southern California and this place is my favorite Mexican food in town. Everything tastes fresh and flavorful. The rice here beats any spanish rice in town. Fajitas are best fajitas in town. I enjoy the margaritas. I enjoy the beans with the chips which seems to be standard to a lot of places here. The staff is super sweet and the service is great. However, menu or something else in the review caught my attention (I'm a sucker for nachos so I think seeing they had that & were one of the top rated, we were sold). It was a bit of a trek off the highway, we past many other places... but IT WAS WORTH IT! Chips & salsa... great. My husband had shredded chicken fajitas & I had the pollo asada salad!! Yep! We've been here a couple of times and really enjoyed the food. The salsa and guacamole are very good, and our main dishes were seasoned well and nicely presented. Oh, and HUGE! I ordered the Super Quesadilla with ground beef. Unfortunately, I got chicken, which was very good. I don't mind mistakes made by the staff if they step up to the plate and try to correct it. I'd already eaten half when she came to the table and was told I got chicken. She felt very bad, so she comped us our guacamole! Great and friendly service. Leslie was so very sweet. The only reason I'm giving 4 out of 5 stars is because last time I was in, I shared the steak & chicken fajitas with my mom & it was about 90% onion & bell pepper with small, sparse pieces of meat. However, it was still a giant portion of food if you add all the sides that come with & the 4 warm tortillas. All for under $20. Also, the chips & salsa plus bean dip which comes with every meal. So glad they're not charging customers additional for chips & salsa, like the good 'ol days in any authentic Mexican hotspot. Honestly, I'd give them 4.5 stars if I had the option for half stars. El Charro Viejo is a small place, with old decor and in need of an update. However, it does not effect or detract from the quality of the meals served and received here. This is solid Mexican food, with a decent house salsa. Though the thick cut tortilla chips were over done, I could tell that if they weren't the combination would have been great. It was still enjoyable and good, but not great. The restaurant also offers a nice selection of cold bottle beers and call to order margaritas, along with sodas, water and other drink choices. I ordered the Chili Verde Super Burrito, wet - it was huge as big as the platter it was served on and loaded with rice, beans and delicious tender pork Verde smothered in the house green sauce. The portion was big enough to share, or if you are really hungry you won't be after eating this. My wife ordered the Enchiladas with Chicken, again a huge platter of food (I say platter and not plate because they are just that huge platters) and it was equally delicious. Well prepared tender chicken shredded and stuffed full into the enchiladas. It was such a large portion that she could not finish it and a to go box was needed. Service was friendly and professional, though it felt more like eating with family. A very relaxed and casual dining environment and it made for a wonderful meal during our visit. This is a good little Mexican restaurant and you will most likely not be disappointed . Well worth a visit. I don't even care for Mexican food, but my family does and we were visiting so majority rules! The pork verdant was delish! The whole beans were tasty. The carnitas was excellent as well as the cucumber tomato onion spicy salad served on the side. My brother says the shredded beef is the best he's ever had. My sister loved the margaritas! This place may get overlooked because it's hidden in a strip mall but I think it is consistently delicious and may secretly be the best Mexican food in Grants Pass. The interior is authentically-decorated, so that you forget about the strip mall vibe once you walk in. The service is friendly and prompt. I've had the red and mole enchiladas--both delicious. The mole is unique--sweeter than other moles--but very flavorful. The refried beans are so good. And to top it all off, the flan is the best. I had a chicken enchilada as a side with the main plate of vegetarian rice. Plus: Rice came with tons of veggies, enchilada had lots of shredded white chicken meat, virgin maggie was OKl Negatives: THEY USE LARD in their refried beans. Meal was greasy and very salty. Chicken in enchilada was bland. Spanish rice was bland and pale pink indicating very little tomato sauce used. Chili sauce spread over enchilada was salty and bland. Pico de gallo was bland. I had to order a small dish of their hotter sauce to spice up the pico de gallo. Overall: I give the experience 4 stars for service, 5 for facilities, 2 for food. I might try them one more time but would ask them to decrease the salt and the grease and to use some spices to flavor up the food instead of killing everything with salt. If they use lard for their spanish rice, that would make them a "No Go" place for me. They do offer whole pinto beans. Summary: Not the best place in town. Best is Taqueria la Guacamaya in Rogue River. I'm Hispanic so I know good quality restaurant Mexican food. Sorry to say but El Charro Viejo doesn't come close. These days everyone is health conscientious so recommend eliminating the lard when cooking any of their items. Also, including the anticipated tip amount at the bottom of the bill of 18%, 20%, 25% & 30% is a real turn off. read more

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Grants Pass. It's an unexpected find in a shopping center, but it's a gem. The food is delicious and the service is wonderful. It's our go-to restaurant when we have out-of-town guests, and has been enjoyed by our friends and family from Chicago, Boise, and San Francisco. Everyone loves it! My favorite menu item has been Carnitas Charro. Their carnitas are tasty and it is served with lightly pickled fresh veggies. Yum! I always have leftovers for at least two more meals.
