This place is tucked away in the Albertsons shopping center. Surprisingly it was really busy on a Tuesday evening. Good sign!! They were short a cook this night, but managed to keep up. The staff really hustled to make sure everyone was attended to. I ordered the combo with chili relleno & beef enchilada. Both were very good. My wife had a chicken quesadilla, and loved it. We are Mexican food aficionados at our house. We've lived in Mexico. We know what we like and we appreciate classic Mexican fare. Charro Viejo is our favorite local spot. My husband get the Al pastor tacos every time and says it's the best he's had ever (besting the 50+ tacos he tried last time we stayed in Mexico) and I go for the carnitas tacos. Recently I went a little crazy and got their chicken mole instead - YUM. Another favorite is the chicken tortilla soup - so yummy on a winter day. read more

The food here is good and our waitress was very polite. They have so many dishes to choose from. It was difficult to make a decision but I'm sure it's hard to choose wrong. My boyfriends dish had chicken which was very flavorful and tender. The pork verde is tender, has a nice flavor as well and is not at all spicy. I was on the road and was looking for delicious authentic Mexican food. I was surprise to find it on the outskirts of Grants Pass. Great food great service with a wonderful atmosphere. It's really beautiful with the nice murals on the walls and in the booths. I had the shrimp enchiladas and the plate was massive, enough for two people. This is my absolute favorite Mexican place, not just in Grants Pass, but anywhere. Every time I had out of town visitors I would bring them to El Charro Viejo and they would often request to go back a second time during their visit. I've moved out of the area and have yet to find a new Mexican restaurant that even comes close. My favorite favorite dishes of theirs: chili rellinos, enchiladas with green sauce, and seafood chimichanga. Just know going in that their food is made fresh so if they're busy it takes a little while to get your food. But it's so worth the wait! read more

Sighhhhh... We read in the reviews: all homemade. We read: handmade tortillas. We tasted canned tomatoes for the salsa. We had generic flour tortillas for our fajitas. There were 2 tables occupied when we got there and yet service was painfully inadequate. We were brought chips and salsa, but no napkins. Requested napkins. Waited. Requested napkins again. It took way too long for our order to be taken. Fajitas came to the table sizzling hot... small steak slices and 5 decent sized shrimp (cooked nicely... not chewy) on a HUGE pile of grilled onion and peppers. Chicken tortilla soup was good. My pork tamale was not heated up enough (not cold, not warm) but, it would have taken too much to get a waitress to make it right, so we didn't bother. Asked for a to-go box, waitress dropped it on the table and walked away. The decor is your typical run-of-the-mill (run down and not particularly clean) hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant-cafe. Hubster said the margarita was decent with enough Hornitos. They were quite large. I had a delicious ice tea and it was fresh brewed. We'd never stop in again. read more

Friendly service, large portion sizes. Food takes a while, but they tell you up front it is all made fresh and stuff you full of several types of salsa while you wait. There was a normal salsa, a runny verde salsa, and refried beans. The Verde salsa tastes very good but needs cooked down. Toddler loved the bean and cheese burrito. The kids portion would easily have fed an adult. Beans and rice were good, tasted as expected for a good Mexican restaurant. Meat was a tiny bit tough, but well seasoned and just not the highest quality (prices were low to match). Would go again if in the area and craving Mexican! read more

Great service and food I don't really rate a restaurant on service because I'm going for food but they have great service and really good food! All their food is made fresh I love the super burrito with carne asada the meat is grilled and has great grilled flavor and the meat is very good! There guacamole is also good and chili relleno is excellent I also tried a new chicken dish they were advertising and it had so much flavor and the chicken was GREAT! They told me they make fresh corn tortillas on Sunday mornings. Their food isn't greasy or typical Mexican food around here it is really exceptional read more

I've been living here for a while now and I can tell you, I've tried quite a number of Mexican restaurants. Some really good, some should close their doors and not because of Covid. Harsh, maybe, but when you are trying to get the best taste and quality for your hard-earned money, it can get embarrassing when the waitress asks if you want a to-go box and you've barely eaten any of it and say, "no!" Anyway, in the case of El Charro Viejo, this off the beaten path restaurant is wonderful! Not only is the food good, great even, but the presentation is magnificent. It looks beautiful on the platters the food is served on and it tastes like heaven. I had the poblano pepper stuffed with seafood, served with rice, beans, a small salad and a wonderfully tasty pico de gallo. The beans, which I am not a fan of, by the way, were creamy, soft, but not mushy, and had just a little cheese on top. Usually for some reason, most Mexican restaurants smother the beans with cheese. If you're a bean lover, then this is, or at least should be an insult to your palate. If you are not a bean lover, then all you probably do is scrape off the cheese and leave the beans. I had to taste them and ended up eating pretty much the whole thing! The rice was fluffy, not sticky, and had just the right amount of tomatoes mixed in...superb! For the star of the platter, it was the chili relleno filled with seafood. There were shrimp, scallops, and white fish mixed in a creamy sauce that was amazing. The entire meal was one that you linger over and savor, not one that gets gobbled down and forgotten. I seldom eat my whole plate as was this case, but for lunch the next day, it was just as savory, just as luscious; and I look forward to my next food adventure at this lovely, quaint, themed restaurant. Not the traditional food I had consistently in my life in San Diego but it was definitely good

This place use to have great service and good food. But the last two times we have come here we have been virtually ignored the whole time, had to wait forever for food and then had subpar food. This last time we went was going to be our last time trying. Right off the the waitress took our order and then never came back to ask us if we wanted water, chips, or salsa refills. The food took forever,my burrito was lukewarm in the middle and my partners nachos were burned and had very little beans meat or cheese on the lower levels. No one ever stopped by to ask us how everything was. In fact, no one even brought us the bill, we had to stand and go to the front to force someone to let us pay and leave. The food use to be great and the service outstanding. I don't know what has changed, other than we got the same waitress both times. read more

This place smells so good as you drive by it has been consistently making me hungry before I go grocery shopping at the Albertsons next door for months so we finally decided to give it a go! We ordered to go and the food was hot and tasty! The Chile relleno was spicy!!!!!! But then again I'm a big baby but Chile relleno is normally one I can handle. Great fluff to the egg batter of it and well cooked! So maybe just my taste. The rice and beans were definitely not my favorite very bland but nothing some salsa can't fix! It did the job of feeding my family for the night so I was happy! Im a local so I called them one night to ask if I could buy something kinda custom and not on the menu but not too difficult in my opinion and I told her I'd pay anything it was just a strong craving! She was nice and asked me to hold but never came back for over 6 minutes and then I was hung up on. Seemed like they were just hoping I'd hang up because I heard the click of them opening the line up and then hanging up. Kinda rude just say no! But oh well. We probably won't be back there because there is so much better Mexican food in town that is way more authentic. But if you're in a pinch they are there. This used to be my favorite Mexican Restaurant in town until they relocated. I want the old menu back. It's ridiculous that they don't allow you to order one taco by itself. Also, the prices went up and I'm not impressed enough with the food or service to pay it... I had to hunt down a server to get a refill and there were only 3 tables full at the time. They now charge for seltzer water which is lame.. and what happened to the grilled onions that used to come with entrees? That is something that made them stand out from the competition. The kids menu policy is too strict. Myself and a few of my elderly friends don't eat very much food. We should be allowed to order from the kids menu. If there keeps being all these stupid little rules, I will be going somewhere else. I'm very disappointed. You're not my numero uno anymore. read more
