Very cool, very small interior with lots of brick and and a semi-open kitchen. Our server wasn't completely fluent in English but with the help of my very weak Spanish we did just fine. My partner asked if it qualified as a dive and I said yes, but we love dives. The Ranchero Breakfast was delicious. I loved the skirt steak and the small sopes buried below my eggs and green sauce. The salsa verde had just the right kick. The homemade tortillas are great. The salsa is a little runny for my taste. We will be back. One small note: The door opens right into the small dining room. I imagine it gets cold in winter when the door opens and closes. read more

FYI: $10 card minimum This restaurant is severely underrated. Homemade tortillas, hot salsa with chips when you sit down, excellent horchata (trust). I ordered huevos a la mexicana which came with rice, beans, and 5 homemade tortillas. Everything was delicious. The tortillas are the perfect thickness. I'm lucky to only be a 10 minutes walk from here. Definitely recommended. Service can be a little slow because there's only one server who's doing everything :( They should hire another person.... but still a great establishment and will definitely return. read more

Wow! They exceeded my expectations quite a bit! Firstly, the menu is much more extensive than I expected. LOTS of options. There's plenty of seats for groups (it's a lot bigger inside than it seems from the outside). The food is fresh and delicious, the service is fast and polite. Great place for any time. read more

This place is my wife and I's favorite breakfast spot. It's like a block away from us so convenience is a big factor but the food is delicious. Hand made tortillas with huevos con nopales, or ranchero breakfast is a great way to start the day. Classic cafe de olla will be sure to wake you up if you're feeling sluggish. Tortas, and tacos are pretty solid and dinner is good too even though we've only had it a couple of times it hit the spot. read more

Great food! I'd like the concept of open kitchen which gives you and idea how the food is prepared. The portions are generous. And the tortillas are handmade and well cooked. The place is medium so you might have to wait. The boots are kind of small bit the place is really clean, even the bathroom! I tried the Cecina, really nice cooked, the güacamole taste fresh and because the open kitchen you can see they do all the prep when you order your dish. Stopped in after work and picked up 3 lengua tacos. They gave a healthy serving on those 3 tacos - and the tongue was indeed mouth watering (ahem). Very tender meat and the tortilla's are made on premises and it made a difference. They were light and feathery. Damn good. I really like this place! read more

We stopped by here for an early dinner after working up an appetite walking around the auto show. It was pretty dead inside, but I was not surprised given the time of day. My kids enjoy steak tacos, but they are very finicky. They were a hit with them and we ended up ordering more. I like to try the Al Pastor tacos anytime I go somewhere new and their's did not disappoint. They had a good mix of sweet and spice. The meat was tender, but it is the fresh tortillas that make the tacos here a step above. My wife had a ceviche tostada. Normally we trade bites at new places, but I never had a chance to try it. She made the tostada disappear like a magician, only to leave me wondering in amazement. The service was great and the food came out fast. Their house salsa is spicy. I definitely loved their guacamole that comes out in a bowl shaped like an avocado. It was fresh and full of flavor. We asked if they had something milder and the server gave us an avocado salsa that was outstanding. We are not in this part of town a ton, but I would definitely go here again. read more

I am so happy I tried this restaurant. Homemade tortillas could not be better. Refried beans are usually given no attention at this type of place but these are not ignored. They are delicious. The meat, the beef!! I dont know what they do with it but its exceptional. I will go back many times to try other things. Please don't go here. They will get too busy and need to relocate if you all try it. There is magic in the cooking here. The service is terrible. This place is small and nothing spectacular but the food and the service are good! It's also nicely decorated and clean inside. I had the carne asada tacos with rice and beans, which were DELISH, but the best part was definitely the warm salsa they serve with the chips! SO good, a little spicy, and insanely delicious. Was at the Mexican Heritage Museum, so wanted to eat close by. Saw that Xoctli had good reviews, so checked it out. When I go to a Mexican restaurant I have never been before, that serves mostly typical food, I usually get a first impression by either having the Carne Asada, guacamole, or fijatas. On this evening, I had the Carne Asada. Before getting our main course, we got that traditional chips and salsa, only it was not traditional. The tortilla chips were better quality, definlatly not the traditional kind, and the salsa was more of a mole-type salsa (spicy - and I like spicy food) which was served warm (steaming on this colder day). Both the tortilla chips and salsa were flavorful and tasty. As a follow up, when the Carne Asada arrived (quickly, as we were the only people in the restaurant at the time), it looked good. Cutting in, it was juicy and a quick taste gave it the right amount of seasoning. The meat was tender and not overcooked as is so often done with Carne Asada. It was served with acooked jalapeno (and grilled onions), and the traditional tortillas,also better than typical. Overall, it was very tasty. The only down side to this restaurant is the lack of vegetarian options. My partner got a vegetarian burrito, but apart from a couple of slices of avocado, it was uninspiring, and so were the other vegetarian options. So if you are vegetarian, stay away. But otherwise, this place seems good. read more

Hidden Gem! OMG! The food here is DELICIOUS. I definitely will return. One thing that struck out were the handmade tortillas! The Cecina is a must try! BYOB people! So, the hours on their website say open to 9pm on Fridays- I called at 8pm on a Friday, for a to-go order and they're closed apparently. I asked if I needed to order at the counter- she said no. I couldn't understand what she was trying to explain to me- her accent was thick and maybe she was talking about some local delivery service I don't know about. Either way, don't advertise hours you're not actually keeping. I had only called- what if I had gone out of my way to drive there and find them closed? Totally not cool. read more

Well, food is great. I recommend this place food is so good. But, it is too small. What I mean by small is that the restaurant parking lot is small, and on the inside of the restaurant it is small as well. Bathroom is clean, the waitress are super super nice, i mean they even gave us a piece of free cake( because somebody was having a birthday celebration, and they brought cake and gave half of the cake to the waitress) so they gave us cake. One thing I like is that you can see how they cook, and all the dishes they use, how do they wash the dishes , and stuff. It is very very organized. I was walking down the street in search of some good food to bring back to the room when visiting. We initially passed this place up, but then the enticing smell turned us around. I ordered the Carne Azteca, skirt steak smothered in delicious thick cheese and a red sauce, served with rice and beans. The meal was a generous portion for one person. It was fantastic. My specific meal would definitly be considered at the higher end of spicy even for someone who is always adding hot sauce to everything. As an original Texan it scratched that authentic Mexican food itch just right. We were served very fast and the food was fantastic. My partner and I live a short walk, 5 blocks away but haven't stopped by in the past year. Nothing drew us in but the handmade tortillas sign intrigued me. Today we visited on a Friday night and the lack of patrons almost deterred us. I'm so glad we ventured in because the $2.50 tacos al pastor are 5 star awesome! The tortillas are delicious and gorgeous and clearly handmade. My partner's Carne asada burrito was greasy but tasty. She even brought home leftovers. My $5 carne asada torta was good but nothing special. I'd order it again. The decor is fine, nothing fancy, serviceable, you're not here for the ambiance. The service was slow to bring the check, like 15 minutes but on the positive side, it is byob and you can visit, be assured a table, have awesome tacos and not feel rushed to finish. This place is a 5-7 minute walk from the 18th street pink line and worth a visit if you are in Pilsen. I'd travel for this richly flavored, satisfying taco. Enjoy this discovery. read more

I work just a block from here, and finally stopped in the other day to try out some tacos. Cute place on the inside, not too crowded and plenty of open seating at noon. I had the Cecina tacos, and loved them. The meat was average, but what really made the tacos delicious were the homemade corn tortillas and the guacamole. Both were outstanding and really set this place apart. Overall, happy to see such a nice and affordable establishment and within walking distance of work. read more
