Food and service was good, parking can be an issue. Street parking is cheaper for most visits to the area. Ordered a Michelada, $3 chicken Taco and Carnitas Chili Verde, entree includes rice and beans, chips, salsa and melted cheese are included with entree purchase. Taco was good and bigger than expected, 2 or 3 would make a good meal. Chili Verde was lacking chili, there was some but not as much as most other versions I've had, also the meat while tender was not fork tender, it was good but could have been just a little more tender. At $50 including tip and Michelada price was not bad. Aside from the parking it is worth a try if you are in the area. read more

This is by far the most authentic Mexican restaurant in Hillcrest area. As soon as you walk in you're enveloped by it's charming Pueblo-style ambiance. Feels like it, because you ARE at a family restaurant. Husband and Wife are amazing people, their Son Arian brings the energy that you rarely get at any restaurant in San Diego these days. The passion shows and it translates into their food. Just had shrimp enchiladas, large and not nit picking the number of shrimp either, generous portions of everything. Ask for the habanero sauce! I honestly wish I could give this place zero stars. The food took forever to come out, and by the time it finally arrived, it was nowhere near worth the wait. The quality of the food was extremely disappointing, especially considering how long we had to sit there waiting. What made the experience even worse was the customer service. The staff was rude, dismissive, and acted like our concerns didn't matter. It felt like no one was actually listening to us, and instead of trying to help, they made the entire experience frustrating from start to finish. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. Save yourself the time, money, and disappointment and go somewhere else. There are plenty of better Mexican restaurants that actually value their customers and provide decent service. But otherwise the meal was great. Comp chips: yummy, and with an excellent salsa, as well as queso fundido. Mmmm Malibu rum + cranberry cocktail with lime. Huge & yummy. They had 3 different vegetarian enchiladas: eggplant, mushroom and spinach. They come on a plate of two and they let me mix and match, one mushroom and one spinach. Both were super fresh and flavorful inside, with the vegetable sautéed with garlic. The vegetarian black beans and rice that it came with was delicious too. Great portion and reasonable. It had been a while since I ordered the chilaquiles and I really like how they tweaked the dish. No more rice and the chilaquiles are served traditionally on top of refried beans, it was just the right amount and the flavor was amazing! I came hungry as all of their dishes are generously portioned. My server Arian was very accommodating and shared cool stories about his personal life and his family's restaurant. Even with the construction going on, the friendliness of the staff, the stylish decor, and the fun music playing in the background, masked the unpleasantness of the construction happening on 5th Ave. I live not too far away and ever since the construction on 5th Ave, this street has not been the same. I came here on a Friday and there were only a few people walking around 5th Ave due to the construction taking up all the parking and most of the road. I remember when every restaurant on this block was thriving and people walking everywhere. It is moments like these where family businesses need our support more than ever. I have driven past Huapangos multiple times, and a couple weeks ago, my cousin suggested we get dinner there. We arrived about 7:30 on a Monday evening. When we entered, I thought the decor was bright, colorful, tasteful and fun. It reminded me of a cross between somone's home and a market in Mexico. We were greeted and then offered whichever table we wanted as there were no other customers in the restaurant. In fact, there was only one other customer picking up takeout the entire time we were there. Anyway, we started out with a round of margaritas, and they brought chips and salsa with complimentary cheese sauce. My cousin was really happy about the cheese sauce as it reminded her of some of the Tex Mex places she grew up with. I had ordered a Cadillac margarita. It wa just OK. I wasn't really happy about the salsa, as I found it to be kind of watery. We then shared queso fundido as an appetizer. It is usually greasy, but I found this to be extra greasy. It was really hard to eat. My cousin ordered the crabmeat chimichanga and I ordered a shrimp and a lobster enchilada. I think the food was decent, but not extra flavorful. I do like that they brought me a bit more spicy salsa to add to my dinner. I feel like the food and drink quality was worthy of 3-stars, but unfortunately the service was not great. My cousin ordered a second margarita partway through dinner. Unfortunately it never came, and we did not see our server again until the end of the meal so we did not have a chance to remind her. At the end of the meal, each of us gave the server a credit card and asked her to split the check down the middle. She accidentally put it all on my card and said her boss was not in to reverse the charge. It was an honest mistake and I don't mind buying dinner for my cousin at all, but I thought it was pretty problematic that a server cannot reverse a charge. What would have happened had our bill been incorrect? All in all, the place is absolutely adorable, but we just didn't have the best experience. read more

We love this place! We first discovered it while we were having a staycation in Hillcrest. As we walked past, the people we saw on the patio seemed to be enjoying themselves. We walked in and there wasn't anyone at the front to seat us. It looked like they were a little short staffed. The bartender waved us in and showed us where to sit. Honestly the only thing I was impressed was my miche with grinded pepino and my shot of tequila Coralejo with tamarindo and chamoy. we spent over $600 at this place not sure it was worth it, good luck guys with the improvements. read more
