This is by far the most authentic Mexican restaurant in Hillcrest area. As soon as you walk in you're enveloped by it's charming Pueblo-style ambiance. Feels like it, because you ARE at a family restaurant. Husband and Wife are amazing people, their Son Arian brings the energy that you rarely get at any restaurant in San Diego these days. The passion shows and it translates into their food. Just had shrimp enchiladas, large and not nit picking the number of shrimp either, generous portions of everything. Ask for the habanero sauce! Patio area large enough for parties and if looking for something more personable their bar will not disappoint. Do yourself a favor and check out Huapangos.

I was craving soup and decided to stop in at this place since they have a cute patio right on the corner. Chips and salsa were delicious along with my tortilla soup. My server was very friendly and helpful in food suggestions. I will definitely be back!

Excellent meal here. I was almost scared off by the mix of reviews (5 stars or 1) and people saying it's often empty at night. But it was: -delicious -great vegetarian options -cool patio -nice staff -yummy drink -easy parking for $6 at the bank a block away when the Bank is closed It did take a bit to start the heater, and it took a bit to order. But otherwise the meal was great. Comp chips: yummy, and with an excellent salsa, as well as queso fundido. Mmmm Malibu rum + cranberry cocktail with lime. Huge & yummy. They had 3 different vegetarian enchiladas: eggplant, mushroom and spinach. They come on a plate of two and they let me mix and match, one mushroom and one spinach. Both were super fresh and flavorful inside, with the vegetable sautéed with garlic. The vegetarian black beans and rice that it came with was delicious too. Great portion and reasonable. So folks, check this place out! They need more business. Cute place, chill, not crowded at nightall, COVERED patio and yummy food!

It had been a while since I ordered the chilaquiles and I really like how they tweaked the dish. No more rice and the chilaquiles are served traditionally on top of refried beans, it was just the right amount and the flavor was amazing! I came hungry as all of their dishes are generously portioned. My server Arian was very accommodating and shared cool stories about his personal life and his family's restaurant. Even with the construction going on, the friendliness of the staff, the stylish decor, and the fun music playing in the background, masked the unpleasantness of the construction happening on 5th Ave. I live not too far away and ever since the construction on 5th Ave, this street has not been the same. I came here on a Friday and there were only a few people walking around 5th Ave due to the construction taking up all the parking and most of the road. I remember when every restaurant on this block was thriving and people walking everywhere. It is moments like these where family businesses need our support more than ever. If you are a local and/or if you see value in supporting small businesses, then we need to give our business to places like Huapangos who work hard just to stay around for our community. 5 stars, I love this place!

We ended up in this spot because hash house go-go had a massive waiting line outside. It was pretty nice. The food was decent. They have bottomless mimosa all day which was awesome.

Incredible atmosphere, flavorful food, amazing music, beautiful presentation and attention to detail, and the best service! Huapangos is a family owned restaurant that takes exceptional pride in their quality of food and service and over the years has become my favorite Mexican spot in San Diego. I love the beautiful decor, and so does my family. Here, I go from "hangry" to fully satisfied with food that truly "hits the spot". Highly recommend them for causal dining, date nights, orders to go, or catering. Pricing is on par with the market & they do have specials going on, so check those out when you stop by. We drive down from north county specifically to come here & anytime I am in the area, I stop by @ Huapangos for the authentic rich flavors of food made with love that reminds me of home

Came down to hill crest for the first time and couldn't have asked for a better experience! Food is 10/10. Menu has many menu options for any appetite. We got the bottomless mimosas and it is a great deal! Arian was our server and made our experience amazing. Extremely attentive and amicable. Would recommend to any person.

AMAZING SERVICE! Great food. So happy to have found this gem! Arian was awesome! Definitely will be back!

Super dark and I mean dark, it'll take a minute for your eyes to adjust. Tapas style menu, we were a party of 4 and ordered: Squash blossom Relleno - it's the flower part of a squash plant and stuffed with mushroom duxelles which resembles a meat mixture with squash succotash. Outside is a corn tempura with a tomato base sauce. Pulpo-grilled octopus, one of the best texture and perfectly grilled skin with a chewy yet soft interior. The sauce has a slight kick and crunch from the corn nuts. Crab corn doughnut- this is their specialty and we were about to skip out but glad we didn't. The brioche bun had a donut batter with lumps of crab salad and corn mixture on top. El Festin- perfect for our party of 4 because it was a platter full of 4 Cheese quesadilla, 4 shrimp, 4 chicken slices, 1 jalapeño bacon wrap, ribeye. Flan-we should have each ordered one ourselves! Great flavors and texture, the top had ancient chocolate soil and had crispy corn nuts. Different but yummy. Overall, delicious food that came out so quick, great ambiance, we celebrated our birthdays and were each gifted candles with our names on the label. Truly amazing from beginning to end. Heaven and Hell theme that would make Miguel de Cervantes proud. Goths love and would love this place. The service was great as was the food. A small rotating menu with many treasures to choose from and many items to share. The plating is very unique. A bit on the pricy side but it is worth it for the experience. You need to go at least once. A good place to bring peeps from out of town as well if the budget provides. Reservations are recommended. My only real gripes are the parking (not really their fault), the prices being a bit high and the noisy and dim atmosphere, but the other perks make up for a lot of this. Also, be careful of the candles, one dripped on my date and messed up her dress.

We grabbed a table for our whole crew, kids included, and settled in for what turned out to be a really memorable evening. Now, no meal is perfect, and ours had a funny little hiccup. We ordered the shrimp salad, and it showed up... shrimp-less. Just a salad. We laughed about it because hey, things happen, but what really made the night was how it got handled. Our server Erika noticed something was off before we even said much, and she jumped right on it. Not only did she get the dish fixed and out to us fast, she also surprised the kids with free dessert, no fuss, no attitude, just genuine hospitality. That's the kind of service that turns a small mistake into a story you actually want to tell. The rest of the meal was great too. Fresh flavors, a menu that leans into that coastal Mexican-meets-California vibe, and a setting that makes everything taste a little better. Sunset hit while we were there and the whole patio just glowed. It's one of those spots where you're paying for the experience as much as the food, and honestly, both delivered.

Decided to finally mix things up this time, and it did not disappoint! It's definitely an upscale Mexican spot, but the main draw right off the bat is the location. We got hooked up with a waterfront table, and the views of downtown SD and the Coronado Bridge are unreal. Here's what we ordered: Queso Fundido: Started with this and it was delicious. Famous Fajitas (Shrimp & Steak): Hands down the highlight. The meat was super well-seasoned and the charred veggies added so much flavor. Tampiqueña: Really solid and flavorful. Note on the chips: The chips here are a little different than what you usually get at a typical neighborhood Mexican joint--a bit thicker/different texture--but still tasty! All in all, everything was fabulous. If you're stuck in a routine of only going to C Level, definitely give Coasterra a try! We're super glad we finally did.
