It had been a while since I ordered the chilaquiles and I really like how they tweaked the dish. No more rice and the chilaquiles are served traditionally on top of refried beans, it was just the right amount and the flavor was amazing! I came hungry as all of their dishes are generously portioned. My server Arian was very accommodating and shared cool stories about his personal life and his family's restaurant. Even with the construction going on, the friendliness of the staff, the stylish decor, and the fun music playing in the background, masked the unpleasantness of the construction happening on 5th Ave. I live not too far away and ever since the construction on 5th Ave, this street has not been the same. I came here on a Friday and there were only a few people walking around 5th Ave due to the construction taking up all the parking and most of the road. I remember when every restaurant on this block was thriving and people walking everywhere. It is moments like these where family businesses need our support more than ever. But otherwise the meal was great. Comp chips: yummy, and with an excellent salsa, as well as queso fundido. Mmmm Malibu rum + cranberry cocktail with lime. Huge & yummy. They had 3 different vegetarian enchiladas: eggplant, mushroom and spinach. They come on a plate of two and they let me mix and match, one mushroom and one spinach. Both were super fresh and flavorful inside, with the vegetable sautéed with garlic. The vegetarian black beans and rice that it came with was delicious too. Great portion and reasonable. I have driven past Huapangos multiple times, and a couple weeks ago, my cousin suggested we get dinner there. We arrived about 7:30 on a Monday evening. When we entered, I thought the decor was bright, colorful, tasteful and fun. It reminded me of a cross between somone's home and a market in Mexico. We were greeted and then offered whichever table we wanted as there were no other customers in the restaurant. In fact, there was only one other customer picking up takeout the entire time we were there. Anyway, we started out with a round of margaritas, and they brought chips and salsa with complimentary cheese sauce. My cousin was really happy about the cheese sauce as it reminded her of some of the Tex Mex places she grew up with. I had ordered a Cadillac margarita. It wa just OK. I wasn't really happy about the salsa, as I found it to be kind of watery. We then shared queso fundido as an appetizer. It is usually greasy, but I found this to be extra greasy. It was really hard to eat. My cousin ordered the crabmeat chimichanga and I ordered a shrimp and a lobster enchilada. I think the food was decent, but not extra flavorful. I do like that they brought me a bit more spicy salsa to add to my dinner. I feel like the food and drink quality was worthy of 3-stars, but unfortunately the service was not great. My cousin ordered a second margarita partway through dinner. Unfortunately it never came, and we did not see our server again until the end of the meal so we did not have a chance to remind her. At the end of the meal, each of us gave the server a credit card and asked her to split the check down the middle. She accidentally put it all on my card and said her boss was not in to reverse the charge. It was an honest mistake and I don't mind buying dinner for my cousin at all, but I thought it was pretty problematic that a server cannot reverse a charge. What would have happened had our bill been incorrect? All in all, the place is absolutely adorable, but we just didn't have the best experience. read more

We love this place! We first discovered it while we were having a staycation in Hillcrest. As we walked past, the people we saw on the patio seemed to be enjoying themselves. Sure enough, when we went in, we found the staff to be friendly, the ambiance restful and pleasant, and the food delicious. Best of all, they make a margarita using tamarind that's very tasty! We walked in and there wasn't anyone at the front to seat us. It looked like they were a little short staffed. The bartender waved us in and showed us where to sit. Took a little to get menus and order but once we got the menus and ordered things changed. The drink were strong and came quickly, we both ordered an old fashioned. 2Timers! Today the owner met us at the side ally entrance (as I am in a wheelchair and the main entrance is led by stairs only) and led us to a table that was more suitable for me (very generous). Tonight was our second time dining in at Huapangos and I can only say nice things about this restaurant. We quickly were tended to with our waiter and I must say again Huapangos has great employees. Our waiter today was quick, observant, and friendly. Our basket of tortilla chips and dips (salsa and white cheese) were more than enough to munch on while waiting for our dinner. We had no issues! Absolutely nothing to complain about. Our food was yet again very delicious as well as fulfilling. Nothing overly greasy and soggy. Such a clean and stunning environment. Hands down willing to continue to dining in again and most definitely recommend. I would find it very hard to believe if anyone would have an issue or problem here at Huapangos because I genuinely feel like the owner takes in to consideration of his guests and the employees really are amazing. Another great thing is they don't rush you out either. My boyfriend and I took our time finishing up our drinks (a coke for my boyfriend and a hot tea for myself) engaging and enjoying our conversation after the plates were cleared and bill paid. They didn't rush us nor did we feel rushed. The restaurant wasn't full of other customers/guests so probably why. As I said before it was our second time, both times the restaurant was with very few customers. Both times we came around 5 or 6:30. I'd like to come around rush hour to see if and how the experience may be. We look forward to coming back for another date night. This would be a cute place for Valentine's Day as well since it's a few days away. Maybe call and check if you need to make a reservation for that date.
