    Cafe con Leche and pastelito
    Quiana W.

I came to El Fenix for some Cuban coffee and some snacks. The bakery stands out on the corner and seems very large however when you go in it's limited seating. There are a few outside seating options. The two ladies working were very nice though they didn't have anyone that spoke English there. I've lived in the area while and knew how to improvise so it was fine. Surprisingly they had almond milk for the coffee so I ordered a cafe con leche with the almond milk. While the coffee was strong and good I didn't care for the almond milk. They had a lot of Cuban pastries so I grabbed a Pastelitos de carne. It was ok, I've definitely had better. It had very little meat and did not taste fresh. I grabbed some Cuban crackers to go also. Overall a decent bakery if you're on the stroll and need to grab something small. For me it was too commercial and I prefer a wholesome smaller Cuban bakery.

Do you like super sweet or do you like not-too sweet? I personally, hate super sweet desserts so I'm not a huge fan of this Cuban bakery. I prefer Asian bakeries and desserts but again, that's just me. We tried 2 different cakes from here--currrrrazy sweet BUT if that's your jam then you will love it. Service is very nice, I translated what the cashier was explaining to my husband so that he can pick what he wanted to try. I asked for it to go but they gave us the 2 containers with plastic spoons/napkins and no bag??? Girl, what??? So I carried the 2 little boxes out in the rain and to the car parked a couple of blocks away (parking in Hudson county is always abysmal). In total the 2 dessert slices came out to like 7 bucks so not too bad, just not too tasty.

It also had yucca fries, rice & beans!! Even typing this I can't believe the deal, lol. The service was great. Matteo was a great & attentive server & last, but not least, the place is super cute. The empanada sampler was sooo good, they nailed the flavors for sure. The ropa vieja was not as savory as it typically is at other restaurants. The mojitos and wings were decent. This is a great spot for happy hours and small bites. This place is huge, three floors or something. But only the first floor is used for dining, I believe. The others are rented out for events. Even when not having an event, it's a missed opportunity to not utilize the other floors.

I got the sancocho soup with white rice for myself and it was delicious, super flavorful and comforting. I also grabbed a tamal and an empanada... the tamal was really good, but the empanada I ate on my way home was just okay could've used more filling and was a little dry. I was starving so I didn't even take any pictures that should tell you everything This might be my new go-to Cuban spot. The place is small and was packed, which is always a good sign. Service was quick and everyone was helpful. Only downside is parking--it's a struggle to find something nearby. Still, definitely worth it.

The empanadas were great! I liked the meat version the best but the cheese and spinach were also delicious. Definitely homemade. The vaca frita was so good. The beef was still tender with a crispy outer layer and tasted great with the onions and moro. Portions are very large and I have leftovers for today. I had to run in and out quickly bc I double parked in the loading zone but pick up was easy. I am coming back to sample some of the other appetizers and dishes. Happy to find another local lunch spot with great food and service.
