My boyfriend is a big fan of El Gallo Bravo so he decided to take me to try out their food. I got three chicken tacos with cilantro and onion and a side of their ceviche tostada, and I get the hype it's pretty good. Not pictured was a steak taco dinner with double rice and the rice is cooked perfectly. The atmosphere is nice there wasn't a lot of people which is never a bad thing, depending on what time of day you're going. They had a variety of sauces at the table and they're own "orange" sauce and green sauce. Saying orange because I didn't know what it actually was only by the color since the bottles weren't labeled. Pretty good overall. Will come back and support the business. read more

I ordered a couple of tacos for takeaway lunch at El Gallo Bravo (the full title is Su Nueva Casa Del Gallo Bravo, if you are keeping score). This taco joint on Lawrence is open 24 hours, and is BYOB. I don't know what the atmosphere is at 3AM, but around noontime there is efficient bilingual service from the staff. Typical me - I ordered single tacos with three different fillings. I was wondering if I needed to break open a bag of chips at home to fill me up. No needs for chips on this day, as each of the tacos have a generous amount of filling. My favorite of the three was the chorizo, which seemed to have enough flavorful chorizo meat for two tacos. The al pastor and the chicken tacos were fine, though I admit I was concentrating the sides (lime wedges, two kinds of sauces) on these two and not the chorizo. Never had radish slices with tacos before (also on the side), but I ate them all up. If this place were just a teeny bit closer to my house, I might come here more often read more

El Gallo Bravo on Lawrence is the closest Mexican restaurant to our apartment. Even though it's advertised as a "24/7" joint, it opens and closes as they wish. So, why weren't Rosa J. and hubby regulars to this place? The "older" El Gallo Bravo failed the city sanitation inspection and had a mandatory shut-down for quite some time last year. Nevertheless, it resurrected and has been in business since that fatal temporary closure. Anyhow, we came this evening after Rosa J.'s long day of work. Rosa J. did her usual weekend routine: menudo, while hubby had the enchilada de queso. After we found a table and have got ourselves situated, the server delivered for chips and salsa. They weren't particularly spicy, yet we felt the need to order the drinks. Therefore, a large horchata and a large jamaica helped set the tone for our dinner. Here are my reflections on each item we had at El Gallo Bravo on a cool, non-festive Sunday evening: - horchata: hubby commented that it was too sweet for his palate. - jamaica: it was actually strong and the amount of sugar was adequate. - enchilada de queso: it was filling because of the copious amount of cheese. The lettuce was decently fresh, and the arroz appeared appetizing. - menudo: it was awfully bland. I added all the peppers, diced onions, cilantro, and lime that were given to me to the broth. All these add-on ingredients still didn't boost the flavor. Once again, my quest to find a perfect bowl of menudo in the north-side Chicago hasn't yet succeeded. When i arrived there was no one to greet me or help me pick up my order. After about 5 minutes i stopped a server who informed me that they were out of steak and that I should cancel the order. In other words, cancel, pay the full cancel fee (full price of the order) and leave. When I told them i wasn't doing that, suddenly they had steak and was preparing it for me. Wait. 24/7 Mexican Food. What?!? I love being able to grab a late night bite or early morning breakfast or meal here at any random and ridiculous time of day. With that being said, I would stick with the basics when ordering from here. Tacos, tortas, etc. are always a safe choice. The ceviche and other seafood offerings aren't as consistent. You want al pastor tacos? Really like Mexico? Yeah come here and order at least 4 or 5 with some extra pineapple, cuz they are freaking cheap and F@#$/! Good. Their Horchata is the best in Chicago and also I would say the best Al pastor tacos I've ever had in USA. Whenever you go dine in they serve you chicken soup which is great and nachos which are also for free with the soup included. This place is a hidden gem. So delicious... I remembered eaten like 7 or 8 my god... The place seems to be packed after 12:00pm because they re 24 hours. A bit disgusting the fact that you can tell is not that clean by night but it does by day. The service is kind of slow by night but fluent by day, they have like the two part of the moons lol... which is funny cuz their tacos still super delicious even if its night or not hahaha. I called in at 11 p.m. on a weekday and ordered Chorizo, chicken and Asada tacos. My order was estimated to be ready in 10 minutes just in time for me to go get beer and get there. There were two people eating inside and two more ordering. It took a little wait and I got my tacos! Beautiful! My order was around $7 and the minimum credit card payment is $10. Good that I had some cash on me. The tacos were quite good. Tasty and fresh meat and good tasting taco shells. The meat was tasty but dry. The tacos were wrapped in foil tan. They also wrapped some radishes and lime separately. Salsa was good but a little spicy to my taste. Now, there's a difference between best tacos and good tacos.. In my understanding, best tacos take more than just meat with onions and cilantro on a taco shell. It has to be JUICY and FLAVORFUL meat on MIND-BLOWING taco shells with SIGNATURE toppings. You ever had a taco that melted in your mouth? And it was gone before you realized that your mind was signaling you to slow down and stretch out the joy? You know what I mean.. It was around the summer of 2015 when I first started grabbing takeout from this location of El Gallo Bravo also known as "Su nueva casa". For many months I grabbed takeout either during lunchtimes or the late night hours. Many are probably unaware that this business operates at an almost 24/7 schedule. It's not truly that schedule since I have tried visiting many a late night and not found it accessible. Other reviews here note the same occurrence. For almost a year food was outstanding. This became my go-to for burritos and tacos. I'd given up all other burrito joints in favor of Su nueva casa; your new home. A little later on I remember discussing this joint with some friends. One of them had related that this was a restaurant known to the Mexican community. Known to offer family favorites. To memory I could remember many a night, finding the place packed with families. What made them different was the care offered to foods. Meats were prepared with nice marinades. Whether you ordered a gravy dish or tacos, the meats alone were tasty. They were complimented by the other ingredients. Cooks took care in the cuts of meats. In their burritos and tacos, if Al Pastor was chosen you'd get some meaty chunks. At El Gallo they have always had their al pastor on a spit. Fully marinated in a thick pink paste that reminds of Pepto. At the top of the spit are thick rounds of pineapple. From conversations with Mexican friends this is the best way of marinating Al pastor and is always tasty. Here you could watch the cook slice away at that meat also grabbing nice tears of pineapple so that whilst it cooked, the flavors imbued one another. This is reason why I returned week after week and what had been contributing to a growing belly! (I'm not proud of this.) While a burrito is a mere $6.50, it weighs and I'd guess somewhere close to a pound. On top of marinated meats, gravies, tasty tacos and burritos these guys made their own salsa. And not just any kind of verde or rojo salsa. Theirs was orange or lime green. One had a slightly sour taste with a slow heat. The other was tasty with a spicy kick. Both available with fresh made tortilla chips at every table (dine-in only). The only major drawback was that most of their staff did not speak English as a main language which created a great barrier. As mentioned earlier due to putting on weight, I decided to take a break from burritos. In that time (some months) something has occurred at El gallo. One, no one from the staff I ordered from previously are anywhere to be found. Maybe they're working a different schedule I don't know. Two, the cooks look different, as in a different staff. Three and this is the biggest note of change.. the salsas are gone! Now with salsa, colors and taste would change depending on what's available. If they specifically used green tomatillos or a special kind of short Serrano pepper; vegetables would change depending on crop yields, etc. But the salsas are different. It's a basic red or green salsa. What gave great taste to their burritos and tacos is also negligent. It's like they adapted a completely new cooking method. The care taken in giving nice cuts of meats is replaced with diced meats. It's such a bummer. I've been back twice in the last couple weeks and both orders were disappointing. Had I written a review of this spot a year ago you'd find a glowing 5 star review. Today.. I teeter between 2.5 to 3. Most people would probably enjoy the place. But for me, noting the great differences it is night and day. read more

Ordered a veggie torta and the steak torta. Both were really good and stuffed with ingredients. The steak was cooked perfectly on the non-veggie torta. The bread was soft and the salsas on the side were really good. Friendly staff and quick service. My only complaint is that I didn't get to finish my torta and was hoping to reheat it the next day but it smelled funny and so I determined it went bad, spoiled. Also, when walking into restaurant there's a strange smell in between the 2 doors of the entrance, like no one ever cleans or mops that area. We've tried about all the Mexican restaurants in the area and this is our favorite. We only eat the tacos here, so can't say much about any other entrees. Can't go wrong with the Al Pastor and Tripe (crispy). Steak is hit and miss but recently it was mostly a hit! The orchata is great as well. Only thing I would knock is that they sometimes give you fries scallions and jalapeños, and sometimes they don't. I've tried to mitigate this uncertainty by asking that they include it...alas, they still don't. But I can't complain, the tacos are too good to go anywhere else, so I'll let the inconsistency slide. read more

I have been to 3 other El Gallo Bravo's and this was the only one where I have had a negative experience. I love their food but the service will prevent me from ever coming back here again. We came in around 11:00pm with a relatively large group. The waitress was extremely rude and barely communicated with us. She was clearly upset she had to deal with a large group. We finally arranged the tables and chairs without her help and awaited service. First, between about 20 people they brought us 4 half full baskets of chips. In my opinion, this was barely enough for a party even half our size. They were gone within the first few minutes so we asked for more chips shortly after. Then we had to flag down the waitress to get water and drinks. And the same for our food shortly after. Our food arrived at a varying times with three of the orders being incorrect. One of which they had to remake but after about 20 minutes we began to question if they were going to bring anything out. The waitress did not check up on us even once so we walked up to her letting her know we still hadn't gotten one of our orders. She consulted with the kitchen and they did indeed forget. By the time the order came the rest of us were done eating. All of that still would have gotten them at least 2-3 stars but then we got the bill and were shocked to see they charged us for literally everything possible. The extra chips, a few cut up limes, cheese, EVERYTHING was an extra charge. I have never paid for these things at the other locations. We were never told that any of this would be extra and considering the service I am surprised they felt entitled to. 1 star from me and my party. Won't be visiting again. Also, the little parking lot they have on the side would be convenient if it was fixed up a bit. Because the yellow lines, supply trucks?, and barricades are oddly placed and not maintained, it took me 10 minutes to wiggle my way out of the lot. My friend and I went here after a late night concert. We were both starving and I needed to find a place open late and near my home. Fortunately, this El Gallo Bravo is open 24 hours. YES!!! I learned my lesson from my previous visits and ordered tacos without all the "extras" (sour cream, cheese, lettuce, and tomato). No need for that. I had 2 chile relleno tacos and 1 ribeye taco, with cilantro and onions ONLY. Delicious. I tried some of my friend's carne asada taco, as well. The carne asada was ok, not the best but it was fine with a squeeze of lime and a bit of salsa. Again, this place is a gem for me because it's so close to my home and open late. I come here more often than I care to admit because it is such an excellent place for an inexpensive, fast, and fulfilling meal. I usually get takeout because I live in the neighborhood, but it is actually a nice, clean, cheerful place to dine in too. It is almost never empty, and the crowd actually seems to pick up after midnight on the weekends. I am obsessed with their chips and salsa - both the green and orange salsas are incredibly spicy, but I often crave it and can't stop eating it once it's in front of me. You get this complimentary when you eat in, and they usually also give me some to much on while I wait for my carry out order. I also usually order this to go - just beware that because it isn't on the menu, the price they charge sometime varies depending on who is ringing you up. They aren't trying to pull one over on you - I just don't think anyone knows for sure how much they are suppose to charge for it. Ok - enough about chips and salsa (because I'm getting hungry now). I also like their refried beans and steak tostada, while my husband prefers thier chicken tacos. I'm not a big fan of their rice, largely because I don't like peas (there are enough peas in the rice that it is difficult to pick them all out). They also give you grilled onions and peppers with your meal, but we never eat these. Pretty decent late night taco spot, nothing special at all. Wasn't a fan of their Carna Asada- seemed like it was reheated multiple times, was dry and lacking flavor. Their Carnitas was decent though. Service was slower than I would expect, even for a low caliber place. Looks like they have some good specials during the week. I'll try it again if I'm drunk and need some late night grub, beggars can't be choosers as they say. Hopefully I don't feel like crap in the morning from the low quality meat they served me. I went here for a late Saturday lunch at 2pm today with my family. The place wasn't busy, which was to be expected. There were maybe 3 tables occupied. Right away, we were given homemade chips and 3 types of salsa: a smooth creamy orange sauce with a kick, salsa fresca, and a smooth creamy avocado sauce with a little punch of its own. My favorite salsa was the avocado, but all of them were pretty tasty. I ordered 3 tacos with just onions and cilantro: 2 carne asada and 1 chile relleno. Everyone else ordered carne asada tacos as well, but with different toppings. You can have just onions and cilantro, or you can go all out and add lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and cheese. I prefer simplicity when it comes to my tacos. After we ordered, they brought out cups of chicken noodle soup with limes on the side. Delicious! I added a squeeze of lime to mine, but it wasn't really necessary. The soup was good all on its own. Now, for the tacos... The chile relleno taco was not very flavorful. It was improved by a squeeze of lime and some salsa, but I probably won't order it again. The carne asada tacos were good, but not great. The meat was cut a bit on the thinner side, and the meat was cooked a bit more than I'd like. They were pretty tasty again with a squeeze of lime and some salsa. My fiancee and I waited about five minutes to have someone come bring us a menu last night, despite it being rather empty, the young woman who ended up bringing us menu made a point of bussing empty plates from a few tables before bothering to drop them off. Didn't bother asking us if we wanted anything to drink. About five minutes later she came back and took our food and drink order, but neglected to ever come back. After seeing at least four more tables come in and be seen and brought drinks promptly after they sat down, I told my fiancee I wanted to leave. 15+ minutes with nothing to drink, but every other patron who came in after got their's within three minutes? I've been to many Mexican restaurants in chicago. I stumbled upon this place 5 years ago with my girlfriend. We made it our go to taco spot. They closed down for a few months and we were bummed out. They recently opened up a few days ago and I was skeptical but decided to give it a try. I found it much better than before. Now they put avocado on the tacos. The carne asada is juicy and tastes great. They also give you sliced radishes and lime wedges, and a side of grilled jalapeno peppers and grilled onions. They are Byob now. They are also open 24hrs so this makes it harder to stay away. The people are very nice. Only Down Side is that it's cash only. read more

This will be our first and last time here. Quesadillas were not cheesy enough, dry and barely had a filling. The wrap itself was made out of wheat or something. The steak tacos were tasteless. Onions were still in big chunks and the steak was literally a piece of steak wrapped in the taco. I couldn't even bite through the meat. The enchiladas barely had any filling either. And their guacamole had lettuce fillers so it looked more full. I was disappointed and really annoyed. read more

Last night 1 am. Was a young man. Who seemed generally nice. A bit slow with the service. But it was late it's fair. My group eats. He comes with the check hand written no prices of the items and a huge amount. I asked him to reprint a check with the items and how much they all cost so my friends and I know how much we all have to pay. The check went from 51:35 to 40$ the first time he tried to trick us.
