This is the most authentic Mexican restaurant I had in Chicago. I loved the Mexican Caldo de Rey (beef stew soup).

El gallo bravo is a taco, burrito place, so don't go expecting any thing fancy, or something out of the Rick Bayless show on PBS, but if you want great tacos, burritos, or tortas this is definately the spot. Prices are cheap tacos around $1.50, burritos, under $4.00. Service is great. Rose Marie the waitress, always makes sure you have a fresh batch of chips and salsa, even throws in a free jello cup, if you sit and eat long enough. Lots hours with parking on the side, and an Atm on site. Try the el pastor which truely is done mexico style with a pine apple on top of the spit. I ordered chicken enchiladas and mix fajitas with extra shrimp (paid extra too) with a large orchata water for delivery.. Everything was wrong..! I had 2 enchiladas on my food tray and 4 shrimps in my mix fajitas, no ice in my water so it was warm... I've been there twice, like a month ago was fantastic, tbut the second time (sunday the 8th- Ocotober) was a little bad, I don't blame them because a waiter and a cook dind't show up, and they were really busy. It took 30 minutes to get our food, it was exquiste tough, the waiter was friendly and she apoligized 3 o 4 times for getting our food late. Do NOT go here. 1 - this place is a dirty hole. No AC and dirty tables, floors and bathrooms. Shocked the health department hasn't shut down 2 - the food is subpar at best. 3 - there is a waiter there that tries to rip you off. He will tell you the total at the cash register and try to pocket your money. Here is what this loser tried to do to us: he said the total was "23.15" so I handed him $24. He looked at me as if wtf do I want change for. I then said can I have my change to which he replied he thought I wanted to leave a tip. Growing very suspicious, I snatched the receipt off the cashier counter - which he had not given me before... the total was only "20.29" when I called him out the POS loser asked me how much I wanted back. At this point I was screaming enough to make other customers hear this little man's weak and blatant attempt to rip off the very customer that keeps his minimum wage ass employed. I had the worst experience I have EVER had at a restaurant here. It was my Birthday, and after a late night some of my friends and I decided to stop here for a late dinner. I probably took 2 bites out of my meal when I accidentally knocked my entire glass of water onto my plate. MOST restaurants would replace your meal no questions asked. Not here... they wanted me to pay for the meal I spilled my water in AND the new plate of food! They actually fought me on this for quite some time too. Who does this?? WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. The food is great and authentic. They are open 24 hours which is awesome!! They have four parking spots on the side of the building which is SO convenient. The waitresses are always really polite and friendly. They can get really packed with a late night crowd but everything still comes out promptly. I accidentally locked my keys in the car and they were so nice and let me keep my car in one of their parking spots overnight. This place sucks, the waitress took the order wrong,from the get go was in a hurry ,and totally wanted us to pay for food even when we didn't order the"levanta muertos" ,even the manager didn't know how to handle the situation. The food was okay but the service was TERRIBLE!!!!!!! Called my order in and just trying to get that done was a job. The lady said it would be 45 minutes which is super long but I agreed. It took approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes and the order was still wrong. I was also charged $10.99 for a dish that I neither ordered or received. The place is disorganized and I don't know what to make of a cook leaving after making each order. He would just walk away. Who does that? If you have lots time, go for it. I have been in desperate search for a good place to grab some Mexican food around the neighborhood and-FINALLY I have found it! I am picky with my meat n how its cooked and they nailed it on the head the first time around...I have gone on more than one occasion and they have not disappointed! The waitstaff is courteous and the prices decent. The Salsa options that comes with the chips definitely have a lil spice n I like it. Also, its 24 hours and I recommend going there at any hour. As always, get the special. The "Fortachon" is steak, pork, ham, bacon, sausage, cheese, avocado, and sometimes onions with a side of refried beans and rice. This meat-a-lanche is well prepared and filling enough for two, plus leftovers. The green sauce has a nice kick (although it's thick in a creepy way). The orange sauce seems like someone mixed the green sauce with Roller Skating Rink Nacho Cheese. Otherwise a spartan Taqueria with strip-slot machines. Excellent! Live in the neighborhood & used to go to Pasadita, but they were inconsistent. Went in early Saturday night, ordered a steak burrito, 2 steak tacos & chicken tostadas---all was great. The steak was not over cooked- perfect. The toppings were fresh. the chicken in the tostada was pure meat--no weird gristle. This is our new regular taco joint! read more

This place was good for some non fast food Mexican. I had the chicken burrito and it was pretty big! They gill it nicely, so it has a nice crunch. I went with my other, and we ended up spending 17 bucks. Not sure really what happened, maybe it was those two soda's that we grabbed. I would go again. read more

The carne asada here is the standard griddle-cooked stuff, so nothing special. (I have a strong preference for broiled carne asada, which unfortunately you'll find in maybe 10% of the taquerias around here.) But their al pastor is the genuine stuff, cut off a shwarma-style spit and with just the right dose of pineapple slivers. I couldn't decide between 3 stars or 4, then I remembered their awesome salsas (you get three styles). The creamy green salsa is my fave. As is a common complaint of mine, I wish they'd take credit card. They'd get a lot more of my business if they did, especially since its 24/7 status makes it a would-be favorite for this insomniac. read more

I love the tacos from El Gallo Bravo. I would always go to the spot off of Montrose, The best part is that they are open 24 hours. Except one time when I went late night on Christmas. This place is good to eat tacos at any time, but these really hit the spot when you are drunk going home real late night. The red sauce is amazing. I was excited when I saw this spot open off of Lawrence. Get the Tacos de Bistec with jalapenos and grilled onions use the red sauce and prepare for your nose to run wild. read more

Honestly everything is delicious and their kitchen staff is on point. It's a bit pricier than the other spots on Lawrence but it is well worth it. Their green salsa is so creamy and delicious.
