Friendly staff, cute little place with not that many seating, decent steak and chicken taco, delicious quesadilla taco, flavorful goat soup, and AMAZING salsa. Highly recommended for those who enjoy birria tacos.

My friend was feeling down after a long day of work and so we decided to come have some good food from El Texcal. I've always passed by but never really caught my eye until today. We had some delicious Birreria quesadillas and horchata. The meal was very good, even their chips and salsa were delish. Our waitress was very kind and patient, she would check up on us and always asked if we were doing ok. Overall, great food, service, and drinks. I am happy we came for dinner and will be back again.

One of the best birria taco places in chicago. It's a bit hole in the wall but that's what makes it so great. The focus is on the great food that's served. I ordered the birria quesadillas combo and with consume on the side. Also ask for both salsas. The food was fresh and absolutely delicious.

The consume is PERFECT. I could drink a whole liter of it. The birria quesadillas were also very tasty and paired well with the consume. I most definitely will be back here to eat this dinner again. I don't know if I'd look anywhere else to eat birria. My only complaint would be that two quesadillas is nowhere enough. God I love this place The waitress was so polite and friendly. They ran out of rice, but I did not mind because the birria and consume were delicious on their own. I also ordered the horchata; what a perfect drink to pair with this lovely dinner.

RATING: 10/10 I'm pretty stingy with my 10/10s so let this be a sign that Birreria El Texcal is worth the trip. I'm also pretty dramatic so I say this pretty often, but I ACTUALLY mean it this time with my whole heart and soul when I say the birria CHANGED. MY. LIFE. I've wanted to try birria for so long--it had become this obsession of mine that consumed my every waking thought but the longer I waited to try it, the more it seemed like a pipe dream. Until one day, my friend and I took a 50 minute bus ride and 20 minute walk to Birreria El Texcal!! The restaurant itself is super homey and feels like the kitchen area of a friend's house. We received free chips and salsa which were perfectly crispy. Then, the birria. Holy freaking mother of God. Truly the "GOAT." I got the Dinner de quesabirrias which was two quesadillas with birria inside served with rice and beans. I also got the consome (goat stew) which is essential for dipping. The outside of the quesabirria is crispy but the inside is filled with oozing cheese, meat, and onions. When you dip it in consumme, your mouth bursts with an explosion of goat flavor and cheese. Ugh. Sublime. Please please please please please go here to try the birria because sincerely you have not lived until you have!!

Stayed in downtown Chicago for the weekend. Very glad I made the trip to check out this place. The menu is simple you can't go wrong with the quesadilla birria tacos or other carne asada tacos they have. They also surprisingly offer tacos de cabeza (head) which is interesting. It's a very cozy spot with a few seats to dine in, but worth going either way for its authenticity. The service was really fast. I'd go again!

Starting with margaritas (because obviously ‍), queso and chips that were dangerously good, and the chicken empanadas that came out perfectly crispy with so much flavor. We kept looking at each other after every bite like "okay wait... THIS is the best thing here" and then another plate would arrive and prove us wrong again The carnitas fried rice??? I genuinely cannot stop thinking about it. So savory, flavorful, comforting, and packed with crispy carnitas on top with the eggs and pickled onions... literally unreal. And then the skirt steak tacos absolutely stole the show. The steak was cooked perfectly, packed with flavor, and paired so perfectly with all the toppings and sauces. Every single bite tasted fresh and homemade in the best way possible. And can we talk about the ambience for a second because WOW. The music, the energy, the vibe inside, everyone celebrating, the drinks flowing -- it felt like the perfect Cinco de Mayo dinner spot. The service was also AMAZING from start to finish and made the entire experience even better. One of those dinners where you leave already talking about when you're coming back If you're looking for the place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, date night, tacos & margaritas, or honestly just an incredible dinner in general... this is IT

Appetizers were quac and chips, and shrimp ceviche. The guac was really good, but the ceviche was the star. Served on a bed of cucumbers, it was visually beautiful, and the flavor was fresh and complex. There was also a LOT of it. We ended up taking some home. Entrees were steak and shrimp for me, and Tampiquena for my friend. In both dishes, the steak was done to perfection. The sauce that came with my shrimp was spicy and deep--lots of flavor layers there. Both of us took home portions of our meals because there was a lot of food on the plates. Finally, the service--the servers are attentive without hovering. If we needed something, they were there, but never intrusive. It is hard to believe this is a little neighborhood spot, given the service and the quality of the food. It was not too busy tonight--we ate early--but I recommend reservations. It is very popular with the neighborhood. Bottom line, we each had 2 margaritas, appetizers, and entrees, and our bills with tip were around $105.00 each--totally worth it! Try this little gem--you won't regret it.

We started off with chips and salsa, and the salsa was a bit too spicy for me, but everyone else enjoyed it. We started with the Chicken Poblano - a savory dish with creamy poblano sauce mixed with chicken and sliced poblano peppers topped with corn. We all enjoyed it. Most of the reviews recommended the enchiladas and we ordered a variety of them. The Enchiladas Poblanos stuffed with chicken and cheese. The poblano sauce was rich and smoky. We also had the Enchiladas Morita. They were filled with shrimp and cheese. It was so flavorful and the morita chile added so much flavor. Each dish was served with a side jicama salad. Their special was a shrimp pasta with lobster. It came with full lobster tail. The sauce was creamy and flavorful. It is also BYOB, which is a nice option. Service was excellent, friendly offered recommendations. This is probably one of my favorite Mexican restaurants and highly recommend.

It was a hot, humid day, but apparently it was warmer inside than on their sidewalk seating, so we dined outside. My wife ordered the Vegetarian Torta ($13.75) and I chose the Shrimp Torta ($14.50). They were each quite large and filling. My shrimp torta was good, but a little one note. The vegetarian torta was an awesome combination of flavors and I would order it again in a heartbeat. Only real negatives were that they did not offer any draft beer options and the Chips y Salsa ($3.75) had a meager quantity of chips to eat their tasty and generous tomatillo and 3-chile salsa options. Would actually go 4.5 stars based on those 2 factors, but gave the benefit of the extra half star due to how good our service was and the excellent flavor of the veggie sandwich.
