My cousin turned me onto this place and went here a few days ago. This place is solid. Good food, fast service, and super reasonable. Wished I could stay longer to try out more of their items but came here just before leaving town. I ordered the Oregon burrito which comes with asada, bacon, onions, bell pepper, and potatoes. A real hearty and flavorful burrito and the thing is massive. For some God awful reason I felt compelled to add a side of beans and cheese with the burrito....I was already full and joy eating half way into the burrito....so glutinous I am but it was really good. I did add sour cream and avocado sauce to the burrito, I did wish they had put a little more in of each but for $.25 for each item I can't complain. Most places will add well over $2 per each item. The beans and cheese needed a little more salt. This place is definitely worth a try and plenty to choose from if burritos aren't your thing. 4.5 out of 5 stars, would recommend! read more

I'm always on the lookout for a good burrito especially one closer to work. I ordered the Carnitas Burrito. They lived up to there name in that it was ready faster than any food I've ever placed including the Costco food court. However the burrito was largely tasteless watery and despite being hungry I gave up any desire to continue to eat halfway through. I hate leaving a less than stellar review but it appears they have focused largely on speed and that's it. We just moved to Portland from LA and have been on the hunt for Mexican food that tastes like home. While most places have been good, none of them have had the same taste or qualities we loved so much in SoCal. That is until today, when we ordered Super Burrito on a whim. When trying new places I always like to get a variety, so we ordered a few burritos, pastor nachos, crunchy tacos, taquitos, and a quesadilla. The pastor nachos were tasty and filled with toppings, the super burrito was delicious with the steak picado and chile relleno (made in the exact same style as my fave place in LA), taquitos swimming in avocado salsa like back home, and super tasty crunchy tacos. The quesadilla was stuffed full of meat and was delicious as well. Also, the salsas! We've been having such a hard time finding spicy yet flavorful salsas here, but the habanero salsa did not disappoint. This place isn't like the other Portland Mexican restaurants we've tried, which may be why the ratings are low. But this place hits just like the authentic stuff we enjoyed in LA, so if that's what you're on the hunt for you've found your place. read more

Doesn't look like much and if you didn't know it was there you would probably miss it, if you weren't walking by it but definitely the best hole in the wall taco shop in St. John's! Foods always fresh an amazing decent price for the amount of food your going to get. An for some one like me who lives a block away and doesn't want to eat burritos asada fries or nachos ever day not that I would mind lol but they all so have amazing hamburgers French fries hell they even have a French dip that's pretty dang good!!! Careful. My credit card wasn't returned to my when i picked up my food. They didn't hand it back and within 24 hours I had PlayStation, google, amazon charges on it. I called them, they still had my card but denied anyone having used it (although this is the only possible solution) Bummer, I like this place, but if your kid steals customers cards and they politely call you so you can have a discussion with your kid so they can learn the consequences of their actions and you deny it..... I know this spartan St Johns taqueria is on the radar for the locals (as evidenced by how many people may be in line for cheap burritos, esp. in the evening times), but I found their burritos to be just OK. Definitely not a mission-style burrito... this place is very Mexican. I ordered the chicken burrito not expecting to get dark meat... but it was a pleasant, savory surprise. Also some house-made pinto beans and i'm not even sure what else... pretty good deal for what you get. My burrito was very juicy and flavorful. I don't think it had cheese or any of the familiar accoutrements I associate with the Californian style. You don't really get to choose what goes into your burrito but you can ask. It's a one-stop pre-fab burrito-solution. As far as Mexican-food goes, this definitely trended more towards the healthier side. Clean place. Nice people. read more

So I usually don't complain about places. I've tried this place multiple occasions and tbh. This food is a bland watery mess. Sure the quantity of the food is great but the overall taste is bland. Plus I love using salsa verde but I feel like my food is already in the Pacific that adding it would just make it overflow. Plus, the cashier seems to have a problem with giving people drinks and I always had to ask for it. Best Beef Burrito! My husband brought home burritos for dinner from his favorite burrito place. He normally orders a Carne Asada with cheese. It was the best beef burrito I've ever had in my life! He would buy burritos for his co-workers when he's nearby and they love it every time. This place must be doing something right. I'm surprised by the positive reviews for this place. First off, the food is depressingly mediocre. Seriously, head to La Superior at Lombard and Greely if you're looking for exceptional tacos and burritos in NoPo, or to the tacaria in the back of the Mexican grocery a block up Lombard if you're looking for tacos better than these guys'. Second, their prices are cheap, but I don't feel that you're getting anywhere near the kind of bang-for-your-buck the aforenamed alternatives provide. Third, my real problem with this place is their outright homophobia. I'm a queer guy, and if my partner and I come in together, we get horrible, rude, derisive service. The staff won't look us in the eyes and they're visibly furious with us for even walking through the door. I've gone probably 10 times in 2 years--they're very convenient--and every time I go, between the bland food and the rude service, I swear it'll be my last. Dammit if convenience alone doesn't keep bringing me back in--every time I walk into their depressing storefront with their trippy Jesus art, my heart sinks. Every time they reject my partner and me, my blood boils. And every time I bite into their food, I wonder why the heck I subjected us both to this crap joint. read more

I am really surprised that this place was getting such great reviews. My husband and father in law really like this place, but when my husband brought me here for the first time, we ordered the super nachos (or something like that) and I was NOT impressed. I want to like this place because my husband really loves it, but I am having a hard time seeing the greatness in it, when really, there's nothing all that special about it. I honestly think I could have made better nachos at home. It had such a homemade quality about it, and to some people, on some dishes, that's great; but when I go out and pay good hard earned money on a dish, not only do I expect it to fill me, but I expect the quality to be better than what I could ever make at home; otherwise, I'm spending a lot of money on something I could better myself. That drives me nuts. On the nachos, they literally only had shredded cheese, some beans, some meat, a little sour cream, and a little guacamole. Where is the olives? Jalapenos? Onions? Lettuce, perhaps? Tomatoes? Would it be too much to have some nacho cheese added? Something!!! I am going to want and try it again, but only because I am eager to fall in love with it the way my husband has. I am looking forward to trying out the burritos, hamburgers, and soft tacos (which he recommends highly). So, you might find me on here giving a different review for it later on, but for now, I give it one star only because I can't give them anything less. p.s. Burritos in St J. can be a divisive subject, like religion or politics. People have their favorites and the top two contenders are Super Burrito or the other place down the street. I'm a Super Burrito fan. My go-to favorites are the chile relleno and the breakfast burrito. The food has always been consistently good and a good value. I bought my moving party lunch here, and for 8 people, lunch was $54.00, not too bad. I had the pork and chicken tamales. A little on the dry side, but very good. The fish taco and Asado taco were very good, at $2.20 each, a little on the high side, but bigger than normal. I really liked the fish, I will come back for that. I used to go here every week for lunch when I worked in North Portland. Now, even though I live in SW Portland, I've been known to drive the 20-30 minutes out to St. Johns just to get a $5 burrito that will last me two meals. The tacos here are fabulous as well: the ingredients are fresh, the meat is well cooked, and the sauces are deliciously authentic. As someone who grew up around real Mexican food in Los Angeles, my taste buds couldn't tell that the food here was made in Portland. The burritos here is pretty darn good and they're considerably cheaper than what you'd expect. I go here on an almost weekly basis and can get a full meal with a drink for less than $10. Now Rosa Parks Blvd.). Neither store is any longer called burrito loco, but thank los cielos, they are both very much alive and kicking! And both, also, very much vale la pena..... so give 'em a go! I used to know a guy who managed this burrito joint, he worked out at a gym I used to help run. Anyway, the food is good, fresh, they grill up the beef, chicken, pork, or fish (what, no lamb, fellas? No goat? WTF?!?) just right. Super tasty. Galaxies beyond anything that has been produced on this side of town since forever, take it from a local boy homegrown on St. John's wares since the friggin' 70s. The sister store in Milwaukie is muy bien as well, and has a drive thru I have been the happy recepient thereof, many a time..... Not a fan. They use a strongly-scented cleaner that can cause people with allergies trouble, and so much of it that I can smell it on the wrappers for takeout food that my partner sometimes brings home from there. Ewww...eau de cleaner is not a good addition to even good food. I've tried their food three times, finding it not very good the first couple of times, and inedible the third and final time. That memorable day, partner brought me home a carne asada burrito, and the meat was truly gross. It tasted off, and the texture was more like it was boiled than grilled. Pretty decent little burrito shop. It's right near my house so I eat here a lot. I don't think it's the best but it's aways very good and always consistent. They have the standard choices such as Carne Asada, Carnitas, Pollo, Red/Green Chile or Combinacion in burrito, taco, and torta formats. Pretty sure they also have either Lengua or Cabeza (or both?) for the purists. I usually just go with the Asada which is always good. My only complaint is that the prices are a little high, $5 for a huge burrito may be a really good value but it isn't 'cheap', doesn't anyone remember that the same burritos used to cost $3 a couple years ago? Obviously food prices have gone up a lot and they've had to adjust prices, but item for item SBE has always been about .50 more than most places in town, the price of convenience I guess. read more

Update: Went back in August of 2010. They've moved about ten feet and totally re-done their exterior, but the food is still just as delicious. If you live in Portland and haven't been here, you're a fool. Haven't been there in over 5 years, and I understand they've moved since then. I usually order a breakfast burrito, no meat, add veggies (no mushrooms) and I love it. Their veggie burrito is also good and full of beans and steamed broccoli, etc. not just chopped iceburg lettuce and tomatoes like some other Mexican spots. I think it is a good bang for the buck. It's always a generous size, fast and very hot (temperature wise). Someone else mentioned the strong cleaner they use - it is indeed very strong. I have ordered later in the evening towards closing when they started to mop the floors of the restaurant and I had to leave because it was that strong smelling. This place was okay. The pastor burrito I ordered was decent tasting, but my husband hated his food. He said the chicken was bland. And the tacos were just okay. The reason it only gets two stars is because we originally had a restaurant.com certificate that the owner would not honor. He argued about it and finally said he would give us a discount but when the bill came, there was no discount. We decided not to make a hassle of it and just never go back. Okay food, bad customer service, and it's in a sketchy part of town, which the place itself was pretty dirty looking.
