I recently went to a Food Truck Festival in Livingston, NJ and I was lucky enough to try a few dishes from there. I ordered the El Lechon burger, my mom had the mofongo, and my cousin had the pulled pork disco fries. We each tried each other and it was all delicious. Everything was packed with flavor. Update**** August 8, 2020 We ordered again and we got the chicharrón which is the Saturday special my wife loved it. She said they were marinated and seasoned very well as the flavors were great. We also ordered the pasteles. Wow! These are the BEST restaurant pasteles I've ever tasted, the mass was flavorful and the pastel was a generous size and full of pork! I also went the Jibarito de Lechon and it was great. Earlier in the week we also ordered and their pollo guisado is incredible. This spot is awesome!!!! I heard of this place a while ago and we never got the chance to visit. Covid has changed things so when I saw them on Uber Eats I decided to order. We went the Lechón disco fries, papa rellena, to start and my entree was the jibarito accompanied with arroz con gandules, my wife went with the chuletas fritas and white rice and beans. The disco fries are a unique twist on the regular version because they put pernil on the fries and cover it with cheese and the gravy is made from the lechon drippings. Simply amazing, the layers of flavor are incredible!!!!!!! The papa rellena were fries to perfection and the picadillo stuffed inside packed incredible flavor. The starters were a great start to a fantastic meal! I got the Jibarito sandwich which was made famous in the humboldt section of Chicago. I got the jibarito made from chicken, the chicken was delicious and very well seasoned and the arroz con gandules brought me memories of my dad who was a fantastic cook! This sandwich cannot be pulled off by any restaurant but, this place has it down to a science. My wife had the chuletas fritas and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Our only regret is not being able to eat it there I can imagine the food straight out of the kitchen. Even with this they still get 5 stars from me. Used to be real good but lately the food tastes horrible. I ordered the chicken stew and it tasted like Dinty Moore canned stew. The arroz con gandules and maduros were ok. I got some tembleque and it too was horrible. They may be cutting corners when it comes to ingredients or have a really bad cook. Do yourselves a favor and drive to Cha Cha Cha in Kenilworth. I've first tried this place at a festival and the food truck was there. I was in love with the lechon disco fries so I knew I had to go to the restaurant itself. Sad to say I was very disappointed the 2nd time. The guy asking for our order didn't really know some of the items, we asked for some pig skin and it tasted so old. My boyfriend had an empanada and said you can taste that it was fried in dirty oil. I had the lechon disco fries and it just was not the same as the first time. Customer service lacked, they're not attentive, the environment wasn't welcoming. This was one of those places you wanted to try so bad and then get upset when it doesn't meet your expectation. Staff was very friendly and the food was very tasty. Ordered morcilla, blood sausage, which was very nicely prepared, but it was my 1st time trying it and it is not for me. Carne frita, pork cubes, fried and so good. Pulled pork was so delicious. Tostones are always a favorite, and they didn't disappoint. I didn't order any sides, besides tostones, but I'll next time. Soooo inconsistent!! Sometimes the food is great, sometimes not. I can't tell you how many times an ingredient was missing from my Bori Bowl. Not just a sauce but cheese or maduros. So many times an item was missing from our order too, and they just don't care. Tonight I called twice regarding a missing item and they were "too busy" to issue a refund. I've been a big fan of El Lechon De Negron, ever since their food truck beginning. The empanadas were what drew me in, and everything else I've tried has been great. My sister was very excited about the jibaritos, one of her favorites. It is a very interesting concept, I've never seen that before - and she hadn't been able to find jibaritos since she lived in the Chicago area. But it's really all about the Lechon Disco Fries. Exactly what I was looking for while visiting in NJ. Being half Puerto Rican and Mexican, I grew up eating more puertorican food and that culture. But once we moved away I got stuck eating Mexican food because there is no PR food in the area. so this food was very nostalgic for me. The pasteles were soft, flavorful and perfect size. So this is the 2nd time I've been here. And I'm glad I came back because my food today was great. 1st time I took the pernil to go- it was eh - I wish I had asked for more salsa to put on it and the rice but I didn't so it was dry to me. I saw a bathroom in the back but I didn't use it. Parking is ample and easy. So anyway- today I saw the " special" at the counter looking tantalizing . Lol . It was called " Jibarito" which is a sandwich that has basically two tostones/fried flattened plantain with a meat then tomato, lettuce and a garlic/chipotle? sauce is added. Anyway I saw it there looking delicious with pork/puerca BUT the person before me took the last of the pork so I was told that people also like it with shrimp so I took their advice ( I was told you can also have it with chicken as well ) ... I waited about 20 minutes for my food. Seemed like they are pretty busy and might need some more staff but... when I got my food- it was so good. It came with rice and beans ... actually a huge portion that I could not finish ( plus too much carbs) . I definitely took a to-go container. Staff said that this special will be on the menu soon. Went there twice...the first time she was rude and the second time I went back she was ruder! The food is however ok! But I don't give establishment's a third chance's at being rude! El Lechon De Negron is the TRUTH!!! I don't think y'all understand the "happy food dance" that I'm doing right now... since having had CoVID, nothing tastes the same. I seriously waste more food than I care to mention. But when something is really good, my tastebuds show up and celebrate!!! Definitely ordering some items off of their catering menu for Christmas. Pernil is perfect! Seasoned very well and TENDER. Not dry, not a wet mushy pile of meat. Arroz con gandules - WOW! Again, seasoned well, perfectly cooked grains of rice, not dry. I placed a takeout order for empanadas, Chicharron de Pollo with Maduros, El Jibarito (chicken plantain sandwich), and Lechon Disco Fries. I'll start with what I liked- the plantain bread on the jibarito was tasty. The disco fries had melted cheese over them and the gravy made it good. The chicharron de pollo was very crunchy but absolutely needs the lime squeezed over it for flavor. The maduros (sweet plantains) were on point. The bad - the jibarito sandwich had too much Mayo/sauce in it and that overwhelmed the flavor, the chicken empanadas were dark meat heavy and had a greasy taste, the beef empanadas tasted like a dense hamburger in an empanada shell, and the chicharron was lacking flavor without the squeeze of lime. read more

Finally able to find and enjoy the famous "El Lechon de Negron". We have seen the food truck but never ate at the restaurant, so we were pretty excited. We got the menu visiting family near by and she handed us a menu. So it came highly recommended and she added people play dominoes while they wait for their food. ..Awesomeness!! Server was very friendly and attentive. The rest of the staff was also so pleasant to be there. We definitely felt welcomed. I ordered bistec encebollado accompanied with rice and beans, house salad, pasteles, chicken Empandas, and plantanos maduros. This was all for me. My husband ordered pernil, arroz con gandules, maduros, and side salad. Yes of course we shared!!! Wink wink!! We met to nice guys and started playing dominoes. Nice to just spend time doing what one likes while waiting for your food. Time went so fast we wanted to eat and play. When I saw my plates, everything stopped!!! Oh my goodness, it was a very healthy portion. Empandas and pasteles were big and meaty. Boy oh boy was it so good. I try to pace myself and it didn't happen. If I wasn't sitting with these two guys I would have made a pig of myself!! Rice and my steak with gravy was by far very flavorful just like in PR really amazing!! Pernil was so soft I would have stuffed my mouth just to prove it wasn't dry and I can still talk. If I see pork, I'm eating it. I came here for a late lunch with 3 other yelpers who happen to be family and on a recommendation by fellow yelper Jav D. Porking (parking) was easy and the place was definitely hopping. Since it was my first time, I went a little nuts and ordered a lot. Throughout the entire feast, service was super friendly. I started with perfectly fried Chorizo/cheese Empanadas and Beef Empanadas stuffed with well-balanced, easy-to-eat goodness. The Cubano sandwich arrived in a neat presentation of moist, quality, slow roasted pork, ham, swiss, mustard, and pickles on Cuban bread. Then came a decadent sight to behold- the Lechon Disco Fries piled with melted mozzarella, juicy, roasted pork, gravy, cilantro, and onions. This may be considered a side, but it's a meal! I tried 3 of their platters which all came with a protein, fluffy, flavored rice with little beans, a small salad, and Plantanos Maduros (fried plantains). The Pernil was perfectly porky with slow roasted pork shoulder in a bright mojo marinade while the Bistec Encebollado impressed with marinated sautéed beef slices and caramelized onions. The Mofongo came with my choice of marinated steak (pretty tasty, but slightly tough), mashed green plantains and a drizzling tomato/veggie sauce I thoroughly enjoyed. I stopped by the physical location and it reminded me of an actual restaurant in Puerto Rico, so I knew I was going to have an amazing experience. This place is not huge, but has a good food selection, small section out front for seating and is VERY clean.when you order your food to stay they have a type of wait service where they bring your food/drinks and ask if there's anything else they can do for you throughout your time there. I dined in. I order the chimichurri chicken, with moro and yuca, (every plato brings a rice and a side). Everything was cooked to perfection and flavorful. the rice was a good texture and the yuca was boiled perfectly (not too soft, not too hard); the chicken was juicy, tender and sat on a bed of sauce. On my way out (you pay after you eat), I grabbed a Tres Leche cake. I must say this is THE BEST tres leche cake I've ever had! All desserts are home made. Eeehhhhh. Not impressed! I am Puerto Rican and I know how to cook very well, so this food just seem mediocre to me. Their empanadas are not good, they do however have a great variety. Their alcapurrias have very little meat in them. Arroz con gandules had minimal taste and not many gandules. And they are kinda pricy for the food you are getting. For someone who never are Spanish food it might seem ok but I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

FINALLY! Driving from down south and made a pit stop in Union and a light bulb went off....GO TRY EL LECHON DE NEGRON and so happy I did. It's located in a very small strip mall and the parking is not huge but on a Saturday night seemed to be plenty of parking and the place was pretty busy. It had about 4 tables to sit comfy. So we ordered take out. Some food was already made to order and kept in their hot buffet area behind the counter, but there was a sign "Other food requires to be made fresh and will take 10-15min". It didn't say on the chalkboard which ones so you can always ask over the phone to save you time. Staff was very friendly, I waited a bit along with others but you can definitely see the chaos....it was busy and it was around 6pm so dinner rush. They have daily specials. I had a hard time finding their menu online but I posted pics of their paper menu on Yelp. Their prices are decent too! We ordered the following: Pernil Platos (generous serving too.. .this is their trademark....Pernil is soooo good and our kids loved it) Lechon frito....their daily special....seasoned fried pork belly with tostones, avocado and the yellow rice/beans...I would dip the pork belly in their mayo/ketchup sauce and it was delicious....I personally love my pork belly with that crunch (yes with that fat...my fave that skin) I know so bad for you. Chicken chimichurri....this was my least fave....it was just ok for me...my kids weren't a fan....this was ordered for them but they ended up eating the pernil. Then empanadas....beef (didn't get to taste it because my son ate it all so I could imagine it was good), chicken (hubs said it was a bit dry) BUT BUT GUAVA and CREAM CHEESE empanada - Oh man! The guava and cream cheese was amazing and fried to perfection.....I wanted more. Tres leche was pretty good....I've had better but it didn't stop me from finishing it. I think if the cake was bit more moist it would of been perfect. And last but not least....my fave....and the reason my belly was so happy....LECHON DISCO FRIES.... A MUST if you're a disco fry freak and if you love slow roasted pork pernil.....get it...its $8 and the serving is so generous. All this for $39.50....what!!! I ordered takeout from El Lechon De Negron. The empanadas are very good. I tried all of the empanada flavors: beef, chicken, BBQ pulled pork and chorizo. The beef and pulled pork were my favorite. I would not recommend getting the chorizo empanada as it was too salty. Also tried the Cuban sandwich which was dry. Prices are very reasonable. I ordered Mofongo (smashed fried plantains with garlic) with Shrimp, side of rice and peas and sweet plantains. Also, ordered pernil (pork shoulder) and side white rice. The name of the restaurant has Lechón in the name and it would be safe to assume this is their expertise. The pernil was juicy, lightly seasoned and shred easily. That said, it was not flavorful and by that I mean there was no taste of garlic,oregano, marjoram, cilantro and so forth. White rice was made correctly and if you are Puerto Rican you fully understand what this means - glossy, cooked with bite not mushy and salted. Mofongo was fine meaning the plantains were not fried well and there was a slight taste of garlic. Shrimp we're cooked well to the point not tough and seasoned well. Rice and peas was salted but not tasty of sofrito (fresh garlic, onions, ajicitos, cilantro, culantro) and Caribbean seasoning (seasoning explained above). I have driven past this place a couple of times and was always tempted to go in. Well today was the day I finally made the decision to try it and boy, I am so glad I did . Let's start off with the restaurant itself. It is a very small and an intimate restaurant. There are only four tables with four seats at each table. The place is BYOB! The servers do not come to the table and take orders. One has to go up to the counter and order your meal. Once it is done, the servers will bring it to the table. After eating your delicious food, they will clean your table. Once you are done, you must go to the counter and pay for your meal. Now for the food part. Most of the food is served in a buffet style, meaning the food is already done and the servers will place it on a plate. I ordered the shrimp mofongo. The meal came with arroz con gandules. You also have a choice of yuca, tostones (fried plantains), or maduros(sweet plantains) . I chose to get the yuca. Every single part of my meal was so good and had amazing flavor. This place even caters for events! The only negative thing I have to comment on is the cleanliness. The servers did not wear gloves when serving the food. I even observed a worker, exchange money with a customer then went right back to serve food with out washing their hands. Other than that, five stars. I will definitely be back. read more

Disclaimer I haven't been to either the food truck or brick n mortar location. I tried there food at an event called #instayum at the Paramus mall. They were just a folding table and chafing dishes but there flavors and homemade cooking was just as prevalent as if it was fresh from the kitchen. My friend mike and I were getting full after all the good eats at #instayum but could pass this by since you could smell there food a mile away, in a very good way. We figured we would split the -Lechon Disco Fries (ah-may-zing) $9 at event $9.50 at main location Fries topped w/Pork Pernil, Mozz, scratch made Pork Gravy, pico de gallo Add some curds and you have some of the best Poutine I ever freakin had it one of. These are heavy, a full meal in itself but totally worth that overstuffed feeling. This is my favorite Puerto Rican restaurant!! The food is beyond delicious and so filling. You can taste how freshly made everything is. The last time there I ordered the mofongo & steak dish. My dish also came with rice, beans and fried ripe plantains. My dish and fries were shared with my toddler whom also devoured the food with me. About a quarter of the food left and I was truly stuffed! Yet, the food was so good I was determined to eat it all! My husband ordered a Cuban sandwich and fries. He too devoured his meal. For all the food that's given I'd think prices would be higher but it's not. Pricing is extremely good. Parking isn't ever an issue. We've been here during their lunch and dinner times and have always found a parking spot. The workers are amazing!! All are highly polite and attentive. The owners are beyond warm hearted!! Every time there they treat us like family not just customers. You always see an owner there and working just as hard as everyone else. Now that's great management!! Yesterday I ordered the rice with gandules, pork & yellow plantains. One serving for $12.80... wow... very pricey. I know food prices have gone up but wow thats expensive. The rice with gandules is great but it def. needs more gandules. The pernil is good but salty. The mofongo is good but is missing the most important thing the chicharon...... where are the pork rinds? I wouldve loved to give this place 5 stars but they would have to improve these things and fix those prices. read more

I visited El Lechon De Negron on Tues Feb 26th for lunch and again it surpassed expectations. My family is from Bayamon, PR and my mom was an awesome cook, I closed my eyes while I was eating lunch and felt the food was so close to my moms cooking.
