El Maguey has one of the biggest menus I've ever seen, and no one who goes there has ever left hungry. The plates here are absolutely huge; when I ordered a burrito, I didn't expect it to be the size of my calf, but it was - and smothered with sauce and cheese. My dad's platter was just as large, maybe the size of a small cheese serving platter, and it was filled with food: the enchiladas he ordered along with rice and beans and a heavy pour of sauce. The food is all delicious, definitely the flavor and presentation I was looking for when we decided to get Mexican style food. Horrible. Service was slow and I see why food is so cheap. I ordered chicken nacho I was brought huge chunks of chicken breast they didn't even bother to dice up and very dried out cheese microwaved over the chicken. I ordered a Taco Salad last night and asked for a lot of lettuce when I placed my order......upon receiving there was about 2 tablespoons of lettuce........so I asked for more lettuce.......I was charged $1.25 for lettuce!!!! Two stars is really generous here but I feel I have to give them that since we never really ate. As soon as we arrived on Wednesday night loads of other people started coming in. There was no order, it was chaos. One girl working the front slowly seating customers and not able to keep track of incoming customers. No mention of possible outside seating, which there was. Finally after several big tops walked in ahead of us I said we would sit outside, and sit outside we did. Sit and sit and sit, like dogs with only a bowl of salsa to keep us company. We finally just left. Noticing many familiar faces still waiting for tables on the way out. We keep trying El Maguey. I don't know why. read more

The food at this El Maguey is better than most of their locations. In fact, this is the only one that I've been willing to go back to on a regular basis. While the food is typically well prepared, the service is always mediocre. They are either rushing you to get out of there or nearly ignoring you. All in all, not bad, but not exceptional either. Worst service I 've ever had in my life. The guy at the front lied to us and said we'd have to wait 15-20 minutes to get a table outside while there were plenty open. Then he left and a girl came to work the front when a guy walked in and said he needed a table for 8 outside and she stated he could be seated immediately. I went to talk to her to ask if we could be seated since we had asked to be seated outside and they gave us a wait time. She had an immediate attitude with me and said she'd have to go check to see if any tables were open when we could clearly see open tables from the inside. Once seated our waiter brought our waters, I had asked for a lime and he used a lemon which is common. I asked if i could get a lime instead. He came back 10 minutes later with a lime in the palm of his hand then picked it up and put it in my water cup. What..????? He then brought out our "margaritas" that had no tequila in them at all. This is the first time I've ever gotten up and left a restaurant. Will not be returning. Incredibly poor service, terrible customer service, and people walking around without a brain. read more

I have eaten here at this restaurant a few times. Every time I eat here the food is ok. Never has any taste or flavor. Kinda bland. I had ordered food to go tonight. 3 ground beef tacos and re fried beans. When I bit into my taco I felt something weird and pulled it out and it was a large leaf from a tree. Cheap and tasteless. I was there for a birthday celebration with some friends. Usually the carne asada is pretty safe but I was brought the carne asada tacos and after waiting over an hour for a table, I didn't want to send it back. I got cold bits of beef on pitiful flour tortillas. The guacamole was tasteless and the pico watery. Went for dinner last night. Ordered our meals and really emphasized the desire to have the meal served hot. Within 2 minutes our meal was served. Barely warm. We were really surprised this happened. They took the 2 meals back and heated up one, same meal mind you, left the other under a heat lamp at best. Very disappointed. If we had wanted fast food we would have gone to Taco Bell, which in this case, probably would have tasted better. What a bummer. read more

The last two visits were back to back disappointments. The food quality seems to be going downhill. This past time I had the caldo de pollo con verduras (chicken soup with vegetables). Both the presentation and flavor were inferior. The soup looked like they had dumped a bunch of soggy vegetables on top. Flavor was lacking, the vegetables tasted old, and I had to dig to find the chicken this time. My wife ordered the sampler appetizer plate. Her reaction was similar to mine. It's too bad. We live in Wildwood within minutes of the town center, and El Maguey is definitely one of our favorite go-to places close to home. It's the best Mexican restaurant I've had in STL yet, and you get the best food quality/amount of food for what you pay. I almost always have leftovers. Love their chips & salsa and margaritas. My husband has gotten their burritos and a shredded chicken/cheese dish w/ guacamole salad; I usually order their pick two choice, and have had burritos, enchiladas & tacos. So good. We go monthly! Have been to at least 4 or 5 El Magueys in the last couple of years. What separates this location, Wildwood,from the other El Magueys is 2 things. One, the Cocktel de Camarones and the Carne en Se Jugo. The Carne in Se Jugo is the best mexican soup in St. Louis, including anythingyou can find on Cherokee in St. Louis. read more

Been to this El Maguey location several times as it's very close to my house, it's hit or miss to be honest, sometimes the food is hot, juicy, spicy and delicious other times it's bland and luke warm. I must have chosen a bad time to visit as last time I was there was about an hour before closing and ordered enchiladas to go. I sat at the bar while waiting and the bartender must have had a bad night as it seemed I was the last person she wanted to wait on, she just looked at me without a salutation and playing with the frozen drink machine, finally she asked what I needed. Food came pretty quickly but the chicken was rubbery/chewy and very dry in all 3 enchiladas and not spicy at all, I couldn't even finish the last chicken enchilada as it was just not that great. I'll give them another chance but one more time with food like this and I'll go to Vallartas instead, they're a little further away but always consistently good.
