We had gone to their other location years ago and found everything to be very average. Nothing really was wrong - it just wasn't really good. They moved to this location and friends had been and said how much they enjoyed it so we decided to give it a try. It was good - not our favorite Mexican restaurant by any means. I'd probably give it 3.5 stars if Yelp would let us do half stars! It was crowded and loud. We got one of the last available tables. We had to wait a bit for a server, but once she came over, she did a great job. We ordered cocktails and queso to start. I usually like a prickly margaritas but I didn't enjoy this one. It was way too sweet and something else that I couldn't put my finger on. My husband ordered the spicy house margarita and said it was okay. It's made from a mix and that's not his preference. He asked for salt on the rim and they put tajin on instead. Our server caught after she brought it over, but he just kept that one instead of sending it back. The queso was good. It had a little kick. I would have liked it to be a little thicker because it was dripping everywhere. The salsa is pretty good as well - it also had a little spice to it. We both liked our entrees. I got the pork and pineapple tacos. The pork had great flavor, but was slightly dry and there should have been more pineapple. By the time we left there were a lot of people waiting for tables! We went for dinner and ordered two 16oz draft beers and they were served in 12 oz glasses . We just let that go but that's absurd to charge and serve wrong portions . Ordered the chicken/steak combo and it was only 3 Little slivers of steak in it. We got waitress attention to let her know , she said she would get manager. Comes back and says manager said " that's the way it comes" . I've never in my life have heard of a Manager not coming to talk to the table! we were so blown away at the poor level of customer service. No fewer than three employees stopped by at different times to confirm our needs were met. Dishes came out correctly and there were no complaints about any entree. We went on cinco after finding the place on Yelp. Nearly no parking in the lot, so I left the family inside to make sure the wait wasn't too crazy--they had a table available for my family of 6 right away. Server was attentive, kind, patient. I have 4 children dining with me regularly so usually people are instantly overwhelmed or gracious. Drinks came out, chips, salsa, queso, guacamole. All were good. I really enjoyed the guacamole because it was a thicker consistency. We ordered, food came and everything was good. I had chicken enchiladas with verde sauce-- and I'd rate 3/5. Nothing particularly wrong I just have had much more flavorful enchiladas. Lady ordered Diablo bowl which was good just a bit more spicy than she'd imagined. Kids shared pollo loco dish and devoured it. We got 2 margarita flights and they were really well made drinks. Overall we enjoyed our first visit and will be back to try other menu items. The spicy margarita was one of the best. Fresh food was a delicious change compared to other competitive restaurants. I ordered the beef fajitas. The beef needed more seasoning like garlic powder, onion powder and lime juice. Most of the meat was tender. This review is only based on a pick-up order. We know they are a family-owned business and have a great reputation. We ordered queso (with added burger), The Enchilada Bandaras and an add'l side of beans and rice. The lady taking my order was very friendly and nice, and our order was ready in 15 minutes. We shared the (3) enchiladas and had our own rice and beans. My husband did not care for any of it, and I only liked the rice and beans (but needed some spices added). The enchiladas (1-hamburger, 1-chicken 7 1-pork) was supposed to be covered in different sauces, however, they only put cheese on top, so they were all a little "dry" in our opinion. Mi Lupita was next on our list to try in the STL area. Located in a shopping center in Ballwin, MO it's one of the few Mexican restaurants in the area. Traditional decor as you expect and plenty of seating for both small or large groups. Menu was very diverse and all the dishes you expect to see. Wife went with the chicken enchiladas with verde salsa, and was a huge portion. I went with the Cali Burrito, a loaded burrito with steak and covered with queso sauce. Both dishes were delicious and seasoned appropriately. Didn't try the margaritas this time as we had errands to run, but from observing other groups they are very popular here. Overall good experience and reasonably priced. Service was great and checked on us frequently. read more

What can I say serve was quick quick quick! The servers were on point. The place was packed and busy for a Friday night. They have a small bar area with a huge TV hanging over the bar to watch sports or what have you. The Mole Poblano over the chicken in my opinion, has the perfect balance between sweet and spicy. Our server we had had a bad attitude from the moment we sat down. We were a group of five, myself and another ordered the same salad, The Fiesta, and we were given the wrong salad. He acted like it was our fault. No apology and didn't ask if he could correct it, just assumed we would deal with it. My friend said we would but asked for some extra dressing when we got the bill there was a charge of $1 for one little cup of dressing. Kind of lousy when it was the wrong salad to begin with. We lived nearby for 25 years and often frequented Mi Lupita. We have moved across town but find we can't replace the salsa, selection of food and friendly service. I often got the spinach enchilada and my family has their favorite of burrito supreme and anything with pork is a winner. My daughters took boyfriends to Mi Lupita to share their favorite restaurant and the tacos always seal the deal of agreement. Our family has used them to cater and have enjoyed the tomales that are packed for a holiday treat. We now drive back often to get our fix of good Mexican food. read more

I used Yelp to find a Mexican restaurant after my dentist appointment in Ellisville. When I clicked on Mi Lupita and saw that 3 of my Yelp friends had given them 5 Stars. Immediately, I knew, I was going to have a great lunch. So, a big thanks to; Ben, Jon and Gloria for guiding me here. Mi Lupita is kind of hidden in a strip center, but it is worth the find. I arrived right at lunchtime and was surprised how full the restaurant already was at noon. Another good sign, that this is a good place. A young gentleman greeted me and lead me to a booth. He told me about the special on their House Margarita, so I went with one and an order of Cheese Dip with Chorizo. He recommended that I get a small since I was dining alone. I didn't know it came in sizes, so that is impressive customer service. My server returned with chips and salsa and my Margarita. Shortly thereafter, he returned with the Cheese Dip. He was so right, the small was perfect for me dining alone. The did had just enough Chorizo, to spice up the cheesy dip. I found a picture on Yelp that wasn't labeled, so I showed it to him. It was something that I may have been interested in and wanted to know what it was. That's when I found out he was the son of the owners. I showed him a couple more pictures and after his comments and recommendations, I went with the Pollo Asado. He told me it use to be a special periodically and everyone loved it so much, they added it to the menu. Pollo Asado is two grilled chicken breast topped with a spicy tomatillo salsa and melted cheese. It's served with three warm tortillas. I told him I liked spice and heat, so he recommended I try the mole poblano on top. As a side I could choose between; black beans or refried beans. I'm a fan of Black Beans, but David recommended the refried. He said, he grew up with them and loves them. Once again, David steered me in the right selection. Both the Mole Poblano and Refried Beans were delicious. I needed a second Margarita to go with my entree. The second go around, I choose the Cadillac version. Oh, YES! The Cadillac hit the spot. I saved room for dessert, because I saw Flan on the menu. Best Flan I have ever had. Service was of course great, I was being served by the owners son. It was our first time in and oddly enough we landed there on their very last day of business at their current location. They are moving in just a couple of weeks to a new larger location and will be a regular customer for them in the future. So impressed with the staff because they were incredibly busy on their last day at the location and still managed to serve an incredible meal with top-notch service. As you might guess from check-ins, we are regulars at Lupita's and have been for 15 years. Our dining here predates our participation in Yelp by a number of years. Originally owned by Jose "Pepe" Campos, it was subsequently taken over by his sister, Lety Sanchez in 2013. Lety has made a good thing even better. She improved the consistency and added a few items. The old favorites remain. Lupita's is not a cookie cutter Mexican place. It is family operated with 99.9% of the items made in house, bringing the food of Zacatecas to St Louis. It is filled with die-hard regulars like us, but everyone will be made to feel welcome. Ask your server for recommendations if you are a newb. I am impressed by how many sauces they make. They make excellent salsa for your totopos to start the meal, not overloaded with onion. It has a little pleasant heat and always has good balance. This salsa is used on some hot dishes, like chilaquiles or huevos rancheros. They make an excellent red enchilada sauce, almost pure chile. They offer a green enchilada sauce that is thick and rich with chile jalapeno flavor. My favorite is the spicy tomatillo sauce which is red in color from the chile de arbol. It comes on the Bistec Zacatecano but I like it on everything from chilaquiles to enchiladas to huevos rancheros and pollo asado. I think they still make a tart green tomatillo sauce for tacos. They have a sweet, dark mole poblano for the Chicken Mole and of course will be glad to provide you with Pico de Gallo. My single favorite thing is Guisado de Puerco which is deliciously flavored pork stew. Get it in green enchiladas or just get a plate of it with the green enchilada sauce on top and eat it with soft corn tortillas. I like to add a fried egg on top for Sunday lunch. Ms T orders it in burritos. I frequently have an order, a la carte, as a side with my huevos rancheros or chilaquiles. We both love the chilaquiles, Ms T prefers the mild tomato sauce version while I go for the spicy tomatillo sauce. Bistek Zacatecano is a favorite of our son and for me as well. As mentioned, it has the spicy tomatillo sauce and comprises sliced beef and onions cooked therein. The heat can vary with the chiles used, but sometimes it will set you on fire. Ms T and I both love the Pollo Loco which is called Arroz con Pollo in some restaurants. It is peppery, grilled chicken on rice with queso over the top. It is a guilty pleasure. After the Guisado, I probably order more Huevos con Chorizo and Huevos Rancheros than anything. When I order other dishes, I frequently have them add an egg on top. Eggs just go so well with chile and the well cooked meats. They will saute some fresh chiles jalapenos in the huevos con chorizo if you ask, and I usually do. They also offer an excellent version with nopales. The chorizo is housemade and is as good as any I have had anywhere. Delicious shredded chicken is offered and one of Ms T's favorites is a Quesadilla with this chicken. Also recommended are shredded chicken enchiladas, either red or green sauce. They also do very good pollo asado which I order with chorizo on top and of course, the spicy tomatillo sauce. Or try Pepe's Tacos with chopped steak and chorizo. For enchiladas, besides the pork, I also order Enchiladas Banderas, a nice assortment in the colors of the Mexican flag or shrimp and sour cream which are rich and delicious, or just chorizo with red sauce. You can make your enchiladas a combination of your favorite meat and sauce Frequently on the blackboard they have posole and carnitas tacos. We first came here because someone we knew mentioned the tamales. I rarely order them, but they are good. I like to have a side order of guisado de Puerco with them or a little bowl of sauce of my choosing to accompany them. Chiles rellenos are made from chiles poblanos and served with the tomato sauce over the top. They have been offering frijoles negroes de la olla for several years now if you don't want their delicious, lardy home cooked pintos refritos. Sometimes in the summer when I want something cooler, I enjoy shrimp ceviche, but it has onions so only get it when they are not busy and I can get them to make it for me without. Light lunches for me are often fish or shrimp tacos. They offer several housemade desserts including very good flan and sometimes Torta Tres Leches is listed on the board. Sometimes people just go to Mexican restaurants for margaritas. It is not what we look for. For us the food comes first. Lupita's certainly offers margaritas and will gladly make them for you in several sizes with your choice of tequilla. Here's what Mi Lupita is not. It is not a "another burrito joint". Yes they have them, but as I have said before, you can get burritos at Qdoba. You won't eat burritos when you can have profoundly delicious Zacatecan comida casera here and there is much more good stuff than I have described. read more

Very close local competitive Mexican restaurants (which we've been to 2-3 times weekly for 15+ years) charge 9 & 11.00 respectively. Vallarta's and El Meguey blow this place away. Servers are friendly and efficient, chips are plentiful and the salsa is really great. They have amazing margaritas - one of us goes for on the rocks and the other goes frozen - they are both great. The food is amazing too, the fajitas are good, carne asada is great, shrimp tacos are fresh and tasty.
