We were greeted warmly and weren't rushed into placing our order (you order at the counter here). Everything we had was delicious--the surtida taco was a standout flavor-wise, but the texture made it hard to eat as a taco. (Imagine a bolognese taco--delicious, but a logistical nightmare. But worth the mess.) it would make an awesome nacho topping or be great in a well-wrapped burrito, but it was so good that I can't complain. My friend's tres Marias tacos with queso fundido looked and smelled awesome. The place was clean, bright, and lively with a warm, familiar feeling. Wow! The most flavorful street tacos I have had in St Louis! A complementary sweet potato mini taco was served first with four little salsas, lime and onion/cilantro. Delicious! We then started with the appetizer of crispy tortillas and pork rinds served with guacamole. The guacamole was smooth and well seasoned. Tacos were the highlight - specifically the alambre taco and the chicken taco. Both were perfectly spiced and good quality cuts of meat. Our server was so helpful in telling us about the salsas, different tacos and generally the concept of the restaurant. A sweet horchata to drink was a nice accompaniment. Phenomenal tacos! Just like what I had in Mexico City, from the plates, meats and tortillas. The salsas here are also very good and spice levels for everyone. We had the longest week and wanted a little treat to celebrate the start of the weekend. We live so close to Mestiza and had been wanting to give it a try so this was the best excuse. We did stop by the giant chair and take a few pictures before heading inside. We were greeted by a staff member, who gave us a rundown of the menu. You order at the front and get a little Loteria card as your order "number". They bring the food to your table. We ordered 3 tacos de Carnitas, 3 tacos de Carne Asada,2 flautas de papa, 2 flautas de Tinga and ten guacamole with chicharrones and tostadas. They give you a complimentary potato taco to sampled all of their sauce and it was so good! We loved the sauce tray and each had a favorite. My partner loved the milder options and I love the spicier end of the sauce tray which worked out perfectly. We loved how fresh and crunchy the chicharrones and tostadas were and how nicely they paired with the guacamole. Both tacos and flautas were incredible but our favorites were the carne asada tacos and the flautas de papa. All the staff is extremely helpful and kind, the food comes out very quickly and hot. The dining room is super cute and they serve the water and drinks in the cutest little cups. I've gotten Alambre taco, chicken taco and chicken flauta, potato taco, Guacamole with chicharrones and they were all fantastic!!! Four o'clock on a Saturday, four diners in the restaurant, and we were very brusquely told they were not taking any orders for twenty minutes. We weren't even allowed to get drinks (not even water!) or chips and salsa. The owner or manager told us in a very unfriendly that they were busy with orders. I hope whatever issue they're facing is resolved, but as someone who had never stepped foot in Mestiza before, I have to say I felt very unwelcome. Great authentic food and wonderful hospitality. I usually judge a Mexican Restaurant by the salsas they serve. Most are still homemade but they can vary in taste and texture. At Mestizo they go above and beyond and are so proud of their 4 different homemade salsas they serve them with a free small sweet potato taco so you can sample them while you are waiting for your meal. Brilliant way to get your tastebuds wanting more and a great teaser for what was to come. We started with the guacamole and wow was it good. Tried 4 different tacos and need to go back and try more. I was so excited to try this place from the reviews but was left disappointed. The space is cute and clean and the staff were very friendly and attentive but that's really where the stars end. The guacamole appetizer was good; loved the chicharrones. The tacos were lacking flavor and were pretty dry. There was a nice variety of salsas but were very small portions and more is needed to flavor the tacos. The one taco that saved my tasting was the Flauta de Tinga. The street corn was good but could have been better. It needed more umph. Overall, I was not impressed but the margaritas were good, the atmosphere was pleasant and the staff were great. Went with two of my besties on Saturday night, and this place did not disappoint. They've updated the interior significantly, and the employees here are super customer service oriented; you can order at the counter, or they will take your order tableside. We ordered all sorts of tacos, and this restaurant concept is to emulate all the different styles of street tacos available in Mexico. We had the carne asada, longaniza (which was described as similar to chorizo and was delicious), el de tinga, and I had the mushroom (casi alucinógeno is what it is aptly named) in addition to the sweet potato taco they brought us with the house's compliments. All tacos are accompanied with four different styles of salsa, cilantro, onions, and plenty of limes. The beverages were equally tasty and served in the most beautiful ceramic mugs. You can imagine called cantaritos. I would have loved some chips and salsa to start, and I will say that the menu was quite confusing. Everything is in Spanish, and even for someone who speaks fluent Spanish, I really struggled to remember what all the different options were when it came time to order. This was despite the owner giving me an amazing education of the menu; I still found myself pretty perplexed. This restaurant is an amazing addition to the neighborhood, and once word gets out, I think it will be slammed every night, and for good reason. Their sister restaurant, Malinche, is an absolute gem, and this place is shaping up to follow in her footsteps. read more

I went with pork, chicken, and carne asada. Each one was absolutely delicious and full of flavor. I think my favorite (if I had to pick one) was the carne asada. It had a rich smoky flavor kinda like pot roast and gravy. There are a variety of sauces and toppings to make your taco to your liking. We did try a few cocktails as well. I'm a little more traditional with my margaritas. They were good, but definitely not your run of the mill margaritas. Please save room for dessert. Don't let the renovated pizza hut fool you, this is a really good Mexican restaurant in an area that already has a bunch of Mexican options. If Mestiza is always as good as they were today, they won't have any trouble competing. Everything was delicious, especially the carne asada. The staff was very attentive and generous.
