We walked in and were surprised to see how busy it was for a Wednesday afternoon, which is always a great sign.We ordered: Carnitas,Tacos dorados and Horchata! Although primarily a Mexican-style breakfast and lunch joint, it's open late enough to catch a homey-feel early dinner! Don't let the strip mall environment get to you, it's really worth the visit. This resto has been around for a long, long time, and it's no wonder, it's very, very good - it beats Filiberto's, Eriberto's, Federico's... and least of all Taco Bells or Del Tacos, or any fast-food Mex Resto that you can think of, hands down. It's homemade! From their Mexican breakfast specialties like Green or Red Chile, Chorizo (homemade) con Huevos, Machaca con Huevos, Steak Ranchero or to lunch or dinner goodies like Red and Green Chile Pork, Carnitas, Pollo Asado, or Flautas, they're magnificent in comparison - and the prices are incredibly reasonable too! This place is located on the NE corner of Central and Baseline. Plenty of parking. Check the hours, they open at 9am and close a bit early. In 2022 they said it is related to staffing issues. They seem to be a problem in all industries. Anyway the food here is outstanding, as you can see in the photos there are people lining up outside at opening and the place was packed during the weekday. Chorizo con huevo and Chorizo burritos are two of my favorites here but all the food is great. The staff is super friendly, prices reasonable, everything is great. Well I been here few times. The only reason I comeback here is because of the crunchy beef tacos. Anyway today I stopped for lunch and we ask our server if she can split it for us. Also, been trying to keep track of which time during the year they're closed- sometimes it's in July and others it's in August- but usually it's for a week or 2. Totally get it! I moved away about a year ago from this area so I went on a Wednesday morning for breakfast with my daughter and son in law bragged how good this neighborhood Mexican owned restaurant would be .. the playlist and decor was good ( that's my 1star) but it was a shocker to see soggy chilaquiles in orange sauce instead of red Chile and in the cheese enchiladas same orange sauce and the machaca was dry ! Nothing Fancy Just Good Food I was searching for a new Mexican Food restaurant when I came across El Mesquite Cocina Mexicana. I have to admit, I was very pleasantly surprised. The service was great, and the food was delicious. As we entered the restaurant we are greeted and seated immediately. Soon after a hot basket of chips, salsa, and soft drinks arrived. The chips were great, light, salty, and crisp. The salsa also had a good flavor with just enough spice. The portions at El Mesquite are large, enought for two. On this visit I had the chicken chimichanga with rice and beans. The chicken chimichanga was fantastic. The chicken was moist, the tortilla fresh, and the sauce and guacamole were flavorful. The rice and beans were also both excellent. The service at El Mesquite is great. Our server was helpful and attentive and made sure we were enjoying our meal. If you're ever in the area and have a craving great Mexican food, at reasonable prices, give El Mesquite a try, you wont be disappointed. read more

I relied on Yelp reviews to talk my parents into trying this place. It is very close to their home, and we just wanted to get a quick breakfast and get them back home. My 89 yr old father guffly said "I don't want to go there" "there is always a line" LOL I quicky told him that was a good thing. We get there and since it was early, we were seated quickly. We all noticed how clean it was. My parents and I all ordered the white menudo, my husband ordered the carnitas. We all started munching on the thin crispy chips and SPICY hot sauce, then quickly moved onto the entrees. My parents and I gasped when we saw the menudo. The broth was clear and greaseless. It took me back to when my dad and nana used to make it. My husband's carnitas was CHUNKS of pork, not just shredded. It was juicy looking and came with fluffy rice, amazing beans and homemade tortillas. TIP: When refried beans are light in color, it means they took the time to really wash the beans. Green. Chili. It's all about the green chili here! This restaurant definitely serves more like 'arizona' Mexican food, but most of the customers were speaking Spanish, so that's always a good sign. Their salsa they bring out first is super spicy, and I like spicy. The green chili burro was large and delicious. The husband got enchiladas.... They were.... OK.
