We were visiting the Salton Sea and Joshua tree national park. We were driving back and forth when we were hungry. We checked Google maps at saw Mexicali cafe. BEST SUGGESTION. It started with an excellent young man named cesar who suggested we get these shrimp filled pepper. Which we did do and only wished we ordered more. Then we each had our main dishes and left very satisfied. So satisfied that we returned the next day, out of our way and each ordered a shrimp pepper plate each along with an equally amazing guacamole sauce. I have been coming to this restaurant in this location for some time. The people who waited on me have always been great. Very attentive . The place is always very clean , the atmosphere is very welcoming. Now for the food, which I think is great! Is out in a timely manner. But you have to order the appetizers. They make table side guacamole which is the bomb and always fresh and another favorite is chilies with stuff shrimp. Which with a little mayo and soy sauce is omg good. I don't know why it goes together but it does and as I said it's the bomb. My favorite along with my son is the Carne Asada. My daughter's favorite is the chili verde. Ordered takeout. I understand that they were busy but there are ways to take care of customers in a polite way even when a restaurant is busy. Hostess was rude. Manager so aggressively rude. Usually my kids and I go and have a wonderful experience thanks to Armando a server there. I was very disappointed. I went in for dinner on 4th of July with my husband. We ordered happy hour Nachos, chilitos güeritos, campechana, Mexicali taquitos. I hate to give bad reviews but it is the honest truth. The food was poor. The chilitos gueros were no good; the shrimp was over cooked( hard) no cheese; no flavor, the nachos hardly had cheese and it had a spat of beans and a few pieces of meat. I understand it was happy hour but even for 6 bucks I get more out of del taco nachos for 3 dollars. The taquitos were tinny which was fine, they were over fried and you can taste it in the tortillas, the filling was dry and no flavor. We also had 2 chavelas. Those were good and cold. The campechana was flavorful with a kick. I've been to original Mexicali cafe and their food was on point. Same owners but different kitchens. This locations food and service really deserves 1 start and for the beer 2 Our server didn't really come back to check on us. I felt we over paid for the quality of food. I guess I have expectations and unfortunately they weren't met. I am not sure I'll be coming back or recommend. read more

We have come here ever since every trip we take going and coming back, they expanded to include a full bar and more area for tables. I Did not receive my money's worth in service and my shrimp cocktail was overpriced I ordered the large and there was very tiny shrimp in it and most of my cocktail was just liquid I've had far better shrimp cocktails with much larger shrimp and much more shrimp for cheaper prices at other restaurants in the valley. The restaurant took advantage of my family as well we came in a large group and instead of separating the checks like we had asked, they did not do so. I've been going to El Mexicali I and II for years. It's a perfect place to go if you want authentic Mexican food; it's the real deal! Try the cheese enchiladas, the pork with Nopales (my favorite), or the chile verde!!! Wow! The portions are generous, I usually take home a doggie bag and enjoy their food again at home! The restaurant is clean and the staff friendly. The Chivella's (sp?) are the best in the valley, although a little pricey. Over all, it's definitely worth a visit. read more

I live closer to la quinta but a good friend of mine recommended the Mexicali Cafe 2 on monroe in Indio and it was a great choice... I have been here twice and this place is great. I have been in the desert for 12 years and heard about their stuffed shrimp chiles for years. They are amazing and at a great price. The staff is attentive. Today I had a new dish which included Nopales which is prickly pear. I have never had it before the waiter suggested it. It was GREAT. Chips are great, salsa is OK. I ordered the huevoa con nopales (cactus, tomato, bell pepper, and onion with scrambled eggs). I upgraded the normal breakfast potatoes for papas con chorizo. The potatoes were ok but the beans (not pinto, they use Peruvian beans) were excellent & so were the eggs. We also ordered the chile guerritos (white chile stuffed with shrimp). They were delicious! The menudo was good too, Surprisingly. Its hard to find menudo thats not greasy and takes good. The flour tortillas were very tasty also. We will eat here every year since we come into Indio every Labor Day weekend. read more

We visited El Mexicali hoping to eat before a concert at the Fantasy Casino. We got our drinks in a timely fashion. We ordered our food at 06:45 pm but our food never came. At 07:30pm a different employee said our order was not submitted by our waiter. They said they would work on it. 15 minutes later the food was not ready yet. We decided to pay for our drinks so we would not miss the concert. I strongly suggest you avoid this business unless you have more than an hour to wait for your food. read more
