First time trying this place. It's a little cozy Mexican restaurant. The place looked clean and plenty of seating. I was very pleased when the waitress came over to take our order. I feel good customer service is rare now a days. Our waitress had a smile on her face seemed happy to be there and just had an overall good vibe. I'm big on customer service so this means a lot.I really didn't know what to order everything sounded delicious she gave me her opinion on some dishes and I ended up going for the enchiladas Michoacánas and my mom ordered their molcajete. Highly recommend El Michoacano for authentic Mexican food in Salinas. Have tried their pastor and chicken tacos and they are delicious! Tacos come with a homemade tortilla, chopped onion, cilantro, homemade salsa, and perfectly marinated meat. Staff is very friendly. Definitely a new favorite in town. read more

This restaurant has changed hands again and is now El Michoacano Restaurante. It is primarily a seafood restaurant but has a few other things as well. This review is only on their caldo de Res. It Was very good with rich beef broth, veggies and tender beef brisket. They serve it with home made corn tortillas and a side of rice which was very delicious and rich in flavor. Meh is a good word for this establishment. The food was just OK. I had the burrito (carnitas) lunch plate ($7.99). The burrito was about 5" and the carnitas were in little pieces (mostly). So, it wasn't real tasty. The pieces were way too small to enjoy because they were almost tasteless. The beans were a bit too watery, even though they did have some taste. The rice was awful. I mixed it with the RF beans but it did not have any taste. I had to load all this food with lots of habanero hot sauce to spice it up, to make it palatable Portion size was barely acceptable. I had a "salad" w/guac. but both were almost invisable. The scoop of guac was about 1/4" round and the salad was about 2x that. A little less than I am used to for a lunch plate. The ice tea was from a vending machine,it was passable. The service was meh, too. The nice (looking) young lady was pretty but she spent most (almost all) her time behind the counter flirting with the help (males). I had to walk up to the counter to get a re-fill of my iced tea. Not good. I gave her a 20% tip that was more than I should have. I thought about not giving her a tip. There are no less than 50-Mexican restaurants in the Salinas area. I will visit the others before I ever go back to this one. read more

Well I was hoping... I keep searching to find that one great Mexican restaurant on the central coast that serves authentic food that is worthy of a repeat visit, but I've yet to find it. The restaurant was clean but the service was only ok. With only a few others in the restaurant, we had to walk up to the counter just to get the bill while the waitress walked by us numerous times without so much as a glance our way. The food was mediocre. I ordered a carne asada tostada. The meat was tiny pieces with very little flavor. I was looking for at least a 1/2' piece of meat in there to get a taste of the flavor, but was unable to locate any. It was like I got the bottom of the pot with only the crumbs left. My hubby ordered a shrimp dish that was presented well, but the shrimp was cooked in the shell and being a bit overcooked was very difficult to retrieve. The garlic as others touted was definitely a plus for the dish. But the beans as someone else also mentioned were a bit watery. Another reviewer said the tortillas were cooked onsite, but either they ran out or I don't know my fresh tortillas because ours looked packaged and were dried out. Toasting them is a plus, but not when you serve them in paper so they dry out before you get them. Oh well, they have potential and maybe other items are better, but for me - the search continues. read more

I was in town visiting my lovely Caroline and passed by this place. The fact that it was packed with our own peoples got my attention, so I decided to stop by. OMG so good. I ordered the michalada and it was beautiful! Garnished with shrimp, celery and yummy spices. Had to have one while I was waiting for my food. All around me were delicious plates being served. They had this family size plate in a mocahete filled with surf and turf. I ordered the mojado burrito to go with the rice and beans and it was awesome. Homemade chips and salsa! One of the better Mexican Food places in Salinas, it's small on space so can look a bit messy at times but just after a rush. Yes, limited English, but very friendly and Polite Employees! Service at this restaurant is excelent and the food tastes great. I have often bought their food for take-out, but eating there is great. I enjoy their burritos and tacos de pescado. The salsas are great and the fresh cucumber with the tacos de pescado is probably my favorite. Music videos are always playing at a low and very acceptable level. Check it out! read more

very poor service, went in with my family of six for father's day breakfast. they forgot to make my plate. everyone in the family was pretty much done with theirs. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. First, we arrived a few minutes past 10. The sign said they were open at 10, the doors were locked. We saw the waitress still taking down the chairs. She saw us and continued to take down the chairs. We thought that maybe the other door was unlocked; however, it was also locked. I tapped on the door to see if she could open it since it was already 10:12. She saw me and continued to walk away towards the counter and proceed on with her duties, still ignoring us. Once we began to walk away she opened the door. We walked in and she didn't greet us or speak to us at all. We walked up to the counter to get the menu, then she asked if we wanted to order to go. I said no, we didn't know if it was self seating or if we had to wait for her to sit us. We finally sat down and ordered. We ordered two carne asada burritos. The meat was extremely dry and oily. We ordered two micheladas; my boyfriend ordered a carne asana super burrito and I ordered a carne asada plate with rice, beans, salad, and fries. I work in Salinas and eat here regularly for lunch. It is literally some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. I haven't ever had one bad item on the menu. I usually order two tacos with a side of beans and rice. DO NOT listen to the comments below, their rice and beans are truly amazing and taste authentically homemade. Their designation as being "$$$$" is incorrect. A meal for one will run around $10-15 on average. Right off the highway and definitely worth a stop. read more
