The food was not the most amazing Mexican that I've ever had, but the staff were incredibly nice and friendly, the Margaritas were excellent, and the menu is different from most other Mexican you can get in the area, which was refreshing. They have some nice seating outside and then indoor seating that is more like a bar set up, with a takeout section to the side. It is great for a quick bite to eat and a few drinks. We had the chilies Toreados, which were ridiculously spicy. Delicious, but super spicy even for spice lovers. We also had the Shrimp Mollete and the Chorizo Quesadillas. Both were good, pleasing but not exceptional-- the bread could have been softer and fresher on the Mollete and the quesadillas were pretty small (again, good for a snack). I love this place because of the bread and their assortment of sandwiches. Their guacamole is also worth a shot. My favorite menu item is the lamb sandwich. Lamb is the king of meats; it is the meat that sires other meats...and they pay him proper tribute. I think this is because they cook it with beer and are liberal with the cilantro. At night, this place lights up to be a rather romantic affair, perfectly acceptable first date fare and ambience. Also more power to them for the fact that they don't sell soda. read more

The service is quick and good. The guac and beef tacos are good, chicken tacos were very dry. I like the interior. A little pricey for the food, but it's UWS. I honestly rather go to Queens to get slightly better and authentic Mexican for cheaper. Not bad place though. read more

The decor is really cute, but the seating is awkward/kind of uncomfortable. We came for a fast dinner. The food was ok, the tacos were just ok. I ordered a sandwich and it was good. We ordered the corn appetizer and that was really good! The drinks looked fabulous - we weren't looking to drink at the time but from what we saw, we should have drank! What a joke! It's ok for a cheap burrito but man they were idiots tonight. Walked up at 9:35 tonight (they close at 10) for two people going to get drinks and appetizers. The waiter said you can't seat if you don't order a main course. (Never heard of that before). Plus You are a taco shop, everything you have is a freaking appetizer portion anyway. Stopped by for Friday lunch, the place was pretty busy! We ordered salsa & chips, steak tacos, and a burrito! The salsa was great, chips were a bit salty but flavorful. This place was so horrible as soon as we got there the host elias or whatever his name was made us feel very uncomfortable. I had my service dog a 6lb maltese sitting with us outside and he made a big deal about it . My dog was very quiet but he kept looking over at our table. I had gone there to see if my company could have thanksgiving dinner the but with the host being such and asshole and forgetting hes mexican i can take my company and bussiness elsewhere. I had the pleasure of stumbling upon this place today... It was cold, I was hungry and what is this an authentic Mexican place on the UWS??!! GASP! I walked in and fell in love.. the decor was right up my alley. All the wonderful kitchiness of Mexico, awesome music that made me feel like I was back in Mexico City. The staff was nice and since I sat at the counter I was able to talk to them very easily. They made me feel super comfortable and seemed really genuine. Now the food... YUM YUM YUM! I had pozole and a mollete de chorizo. YUM! To say that i felt like i was back in Mexico is a supreme understatement. The mollete, which is half a loaf of crusty bread, with re-fried bean spread +topping of choice(mine was chorizo) + topped with crumbled cheese. YUM! I guess you could say it's the Mexican version of bruschetta....but sooo much better! The pozole broth was tasty and the hominy grains were huge! It really was the best meal for such a cold day. I also had their agua de limon (fresh lemonade with chia seeds and fresh lime)... it brought back memories of ... yup, being back in Mexico. Will definitely be back for sure! Mediocre food but relatively cheap. Meat was kinda hard. Also they use weird plastic plates that make it awkward to cut your food. The food here is pretty great. I've Been here a bunch of times and I've never had an issue with the quality of the food. It's a great spot for happy hour and a quick bite. The portions aren't huge so I really like that. The service on the other hand is AWEFUL and everyone has an attitude. The first time I ever went, everything went fine, every time after that there's always been an issue. The 2nd time I was with my brother in law and Mother in law and we got seated, ordered our food and about 5 minutes later someone came out with a thing of Guacamole and chips and placed it right in front of us and told us to enjoy. So we kind of look around for like 5 minutes and then decide "well it was put in front of us, it must be for us complementary" we start eating and our waitress runs over and asks us that she doesn't remember us ordering Guacamole... so we told her we didn't and that we thought it was just being brought out, she then tells us it was supposed to be for the table behind us. Since we started eating, we said we would have no problem adding this to our bill but she insists that she takes it away. We tell her it's not a problem since we started eating and that they're probably going to throw it out in the back anyway, she then just reaches over us grabs chips and guacamole and walks away and simply says "you didn't order this." The next time I went, my fiancé and I took a couple friends here, they insisted on seating us outside but I said that it looked like it's going to rain, so they pulled out the awning... it started to rain but it wasn't that bad since we were covered. We had 3 servers that night for some reason the first two just kept coming over to us and giving us water when finally who I think was the manager came by and said he'll take our order. I order the same thing every time, so we all tell him our order he doesn't write a thing down, repeats it back to us perfectly. The food comes out and I was served chorizo tacos not the little quesadillas I always get, my friend got the shrimp burrito not the bowl but didn't want to correct him because he was hungry, I tell him my order is wrong he tells me it's not and we have a little back and fourth, finally he takes the order back and now I'm left at the table to just watch my friends eat. My order comes out just as the rest of my table is done so now it's this awkward wait for me to eat while they're all done. Time after that my fiancé and I tried to get in a quick happy hour margarita and we still had 15 minutes until it was over so we figured we made the cut they tried to tell us it was full price but I told them it's not over yet. The most recent time I tried to get take out since I had a rehearsal near by, I go in ask 3 people where I can order take out they keep pointing to the back, there were two girls standing by the register I ask one if I can order and she just walks away and says she has tables, there was another girl hiding and I saw her and asked her if I can order take out and she doesn't say a word and starts pointing around the restaurant and pointing up and behind her. So I stand there waiting for 10 minutes and no one acknowledges me so I leave. I ended up getting a crepe across the street which was delicious. I recommend going there for the food and the quick bite/drinks but service sucks, they're all rude and ready to argue with you on anything ALSO if you sit outside (which they insist everyone do) the happy hour doesn't apply. It's the strangest thing. Especially since it's so crowded inside you have no choice by to remain outside once you're seated. read more

I am very disappointed. I've been going to this restaurant for three years and this evening I had a margarita on the rocks with salt that was 3/4 of a glass full of ice, not even that strong and then while I was waiting for my take-out order, I ordered salsa and chips and I was charged. I understand that restaurants have to make money but it would've been appreciated if they could have told me that there would be a charge for salsa and chips. I go to many restaurants in the city that are Mexican and usually salsa and chips are free. This has left a really bad taste in my mouth and I won't be going there again. I told the manager on duty how I felt and he basically told me that the salsa and chips are on the menu and that because the salsa is made on the premises that's why there was a cost. Again, I don't mind paying for things but I just think it would've been a nice courtesy if they told me there was a cost. read more

El Mitote is as close as you can get to a chill, affordable neighborhood restaurant in this area. The staff and management are consistently kind people who seem to really enjoy their jobs, and it's contagious. The food is great, especially for where it is (and how its priced), and their drinks are excellent. I'm far from an expert on Mexican food but their tortas and tacos are excellent, their guacamole is top-notch, and Micheladas are amazing. Went there for the happy hour and to scope out the taco options. The HH only happens at the bar, which is a free-for-all. The host had given up trying to control it, so we literally saw people pushing each other out of seat (and also using some epic side-eyes, which may in fact be the power source for all the frozen drinks). Had the frozen margaritas, very strong and very reminiscent of slushee flavoring. After 45 minutes, the waiter told us that "our time on the seats was up," and then he stepped back to let another seat brawl commence. I came where with my sister and we had a great time. The food was delicious and we got there in time for happy hour. We shared guacamole and chips which were good. I had the shrimp gotta ahogadas tapatias. The menu warns you it is messy- headed the message. If you don't like soggy sandwiches you may not enjoy this. I don't enjoy soggy sandwiches, but I just ate fast so it wasn't super soggy. My sister got a salad (la mitotera)that she said was good.This place is small and there are not a lot seats. You basically will sit at a table with strangers if you come with two people because it's communal seating. The drinks were nice and I got a good buzz! As a regular customer one can expect a reasonable level of service and recognition. Here you can forget that. As a single diner I've been asked to move in an empty restaurant and regularly positioned in overcrowded spots to "make room". They stack the bar with large parties with multiple children when there are plenty of tables. I think this is a ploy as happy hour is limited to inside seats and the bar. There's no order and no clear management. Food is seriously over-priced and not worth the aggravation of the increasingly poor service and lack of comfort,, Ingredients are poor and going further downhill. They lost a regular customer tonight (4 times a week) and I would encourage all to think twice about spending their money at an establishment that shows no care for repeat customers. read more
