The place is cute, cozy and lively. Drinks are decent however the food is horrible. It's Americanized mexican bar food. None of the meat was seasoned well, and the tostada sandwich is the worst I have ever had. It's on a toasted bread, that is very dry and isn't very authentic. Honestly, I love this place. The food is amazing, I seriously crave the chorizo tacos. The margaritas are excellent (and I'm a super picky margarita drinker). The service has always been friendly and fast and the ambiance is casual, lively and fun. The only reason it gets three stars is because we realized after being here a few times that we were paying $6 for a can of Tecate! We never noticed because the food is so reasonably priced, and while the margaritas are a touch pricey for a taco joint, they're well worth it. But $6 for a can of beer?? Maybe the extra $1 or so is for the lime they give you with the beer, which is great, but not enough to justify the price. Frozen margaritas are excellent!!!! Super cold and tasty! However the shrimp Tortas was pretty much flavorless. All I tasted was arugula and bread, ok a touch of onion and cilantro, and the texture of the shrimp was very shrimpy but the so called garlic lime marinade was absent completely. read more

Save your money, move on. My girlfriend and I live around the corner so we decided to try this place. We ordered the carnitas tacos and the chorizo quesadillas. The tacos came with nothing but the "carnitas" (more just cubed fatty pieces of meat, not carnitas at all) and onions. The quesadilla was soaked in oil, so much so that the third one was inedible by the time I got to it. Two stars, one for the sweet corn appetizer, and another for the fact that the food came out hot. Not that it made it taste any better. We got the sad excuses for food as well as 2 beers and the bill ran us $50. For lunch. Chipotle would have been a much better option. Loved this place but haven't been in 6 mos or more. Man, the service was horrible last night. The staff seemed totally engrossed with each other; laughing, shouting across bar to each other, being affectionate. I wanna be in a place with happy staff but this was over the top. RUDE WAITRESS- after ordering a meal and drinks in the outdoor patio area, my friend walked next door to grab something from magnolia bakery. I was still finishing my meal and she went to taste what she had just purchased next door (a small cup of pudding)- a rude waitress came up to her and asked her to leave - stating no outside food was allowed in the patio. We've been there few times, they were nice, but the last time when we wanted to change our table( because we were freezing outside) with another one inside, they didn't care at all, saying that there is a reservation for other tables. When I saw that Rigoletto pizza closed I was annoyed b/c it was the best slice in the neighborhood (which isn't saying very much regardless). Either way I figured I would give this place a shot and really happy that I did. I'm not Mexican and I'm born and raised in NY so people will say I have no idea what good Mexican food is, etc, etc. Fine... However I know good food when I eat it and this "number 6 slow - cooked pork carnitas " was delicious. Again I can't attest to it's authenticity but it was very good, moist and tender pork on a torta that can be described as one of the better pieces of bread I've eaten. The food was alright. The problem came with the bill. Not only were we not goven separate checks as we had asked, but once we did get the check we discovered they had already included a 20% gratuity (for 12% service) AND included the chips that we were given that we specifically said we did not want. They offered a discount for any future purchases which I would have taken if I had any part of me that wanted to return. Also everything was blamed on new management. We went here after catching a movie at the local AMC theater. The margaritas are good and strong as others have mentioned. The staff was nice and kept checking on us throughout our dinner. Great spot for simple, affordable no frills Mexican food. The menu is small, lacking some favorites such as fajitas and burritos, but direct you to their specialty, the tortas and of course tacos. The braised beef short rib torta I ordered was unbelievable. I also ordered shrimp tacos which were very good as well, but the tortas are the real standout here. I also liked that this restaurant does not serve soda. Try the tamarind juice. I had never had it before and loved it. I really like this place for what it is a no frills simple clean Mexican food place. The meat is all cooked really simply. The cheese gets a bit tough if you do take out just throw it in the oven for a few minuets. I always get the carnitas taco, generally my favourite Mexican dish when going for tacos, there are there hefty tacos in doubled up corn tortillas, a lime, and some salsa verde. The pork is really great and gets them the 4th start. The guacamole and chips are pretty good but nothing rave about. The only thing I have ever been disappointed by were the beans which tasted really salty. If you get delivery the staff have always been nice and the salad is packed in different parts so it's not a soggy mess when it arrives. read more

Very flavorful and fresh enough...shrimp tacos and barbacoa lamp tacos were delicious. That being said, service here is quite poor and consistently ranges from forgetful, at best, to downright inattentive. I like to sit at the bar during lunchtime. Should I really have to ask if someone can take my order every time I take a seat? Should I really have to ask for more water? Should I really have to practically beg to get my check and then plead for someone to take my card? Definitely not. What's coming out of the kitchen is excellent, but this place needs to get their front of house in order. Is El Mitote still worth visiting? Been to El Mitote several times before writing this review. I recommend it without reservation. The only thing I cannot speak for are the items with shrimp since I am allergic but on one occasion I had one of my Latino friends try the shrimp dish and he gave a two-thumbs up. I tend to be picky but am a foodie nonetheless. Pleasant service, welcoming ambience, and really, really good food. Portions are well sized and you leave feeling well-fed and not stuffed to the gills although that can easily be done as well. Lastly, authentic Habanero hot sauce...need I say more? read more
