My husband and I have lived around the corner of this place for years. We saw it, and there were always cars coming and going in the parking lot, but we never heard anyone talk about it so we never stopped in. Almost two years ago, we decided we'd give it a try and we were not disappointed. We typically order out as service is slower if you choose to eat in. I'm pretty certain it's a family owned business and the owner is the one taking care of everything; From taking orders to cooking and serving. So yes, service is slower, but food quality is not sacrificed. The day we ate at the restaurant, it got busy and seemed like some other family members were called in to help out. Though it was slower until more help came, we still loved our food. Now on to the food, we haven't had a bad meal from here! We love their rice! I always order their chile rellenos with cheese (highly recommend) and my husband loves their burritos. As other reviews say, the red salsa is HOT, so be prepared. But their green salsa is the perfect mix of flavor and heat. The guacamole is to die for! It doesn't get any fresher than El Molcajete's and contains all fresh ingredients. This place is the real deal Mexican place run by a wonderful family that makes delicious food with love. The chips and salsa are all homemade. Guacamole was made fresh with the perfect amount of cilantro. Both the green and red salsas had a kick for the kids but I loved them. The lamb burrito with red sauce was delicious and filled with pulled lamb that had been slowly cooked for hours. Full of flavor and oh so tender. Kids liked their steak tacos and quesadillas. Especially the one that came with fries. Enchiladas were delicious but the red sauce had too much heat for my wife. I think the mole sauce would have been a milder option. This place is BYOB and is perfect for a group of 6-10 people as well. Went on a Saturday night and it wasn't too busy as most of the orders were to go. Love this spot and hope to be back soon. From Texas end excited about the laid-back food here. Went a couple of times and the food was a bit inconsistent. Nothing bad but nothing to get worked up about. And it seems there is one person serving the entire dining room and one person doing all the cooking. The water tastes funny and the dining room is not very clean or comfortable (no air conditioning, at least when we went). One time I got a torta and it was awful, along with the fries that came with it. That is what I get for going away from the traditional orders I usually get. El Molcajete is a new Mexican restaurant in the former location of Etzel's and, more recently, Back Road BBQ. We happened upon the restaurant when passing by last week and decided to give it a try. Firstly, this is NOT a Tex-Mex or any other kind of "fusion" restaurant. El Molcajete serves traditional Mexican food, and it's pretty darn good. The restaurant is bare bones. When you walk in you immediately get the feeling of what you are in for, a no-frills experience and authentic food. Perfect. We tried all four varieties of tacos as well as the chicken burrito and chicken enchiladas verdes. The tacos were great. They were on good tortillas and served with plenty of lime, cilantro and radishes. The fillings were a bit dry in my opinion, but the flavor was great. I would expect the fillings to improve over the next weeks as the restaurant starts to get a feeling for its expected daily crowds and popular dishes. The chicken was excellent, in both the burrito and the enchiladas verdes. The verde sauce was also great, and I asked for a dish to have with the tacos. The sauce was a bit spicier than other verde sauces that I have tasted ... fine with me! The flavor was excellent. I plan to be back for sure. read more

I was disappointed. First the place does not looking appealing from the outside but don't judge a book by its cover. It is much nicer inside,.festive and clean. The problem I had is the service. Seems like a husband wife operation. He cooks she serves but when you have a few tables going forget it. We had long wait to get the menu, place the order, delivered and wait more the the check. On the plus side the prices are very reasonable. I had the chicken burrito which was good but it didn't have much chicken in it. I asked to put onions in it but they did not. The red sauce is very hot and if you want water they charge you a dollar for it. After my experience here it was just okay but I can not see myself coming back. read more

Do not judge the book by its cover. When we parked outside, it didn't look very inviting but once we got inside, we felt welcome and happy to have chosen this restaurant to have dinner. Have been driving past this place for two years and finally decided to stop in and give it a try. Honestly, it was some of the best Mexican food I've ever had! We tried the chicken enchiladas with mike and the goat with salsa verde. (Be warned: the goat is on the spicier side). Both were delicious! My fiancé got a horchata which was also excellent. I saw some complaints about the service but we did not experience any issues with that. The food came out super quick, we were given fresh chips and salsa, and the waitress checked in several times. Might have good food, if you could ever get any service! We came in on a Thursday evening at 7 pm. All of the front booths had dirty dishes on them, it looked as though there was only a single person working there. We were told to seat ourselves, then 2 menus were dropped off without a word spoken. We then waited another 10 min, no one brought water or came to our table to take an order. There were 2 other groups dining and no one came to their tables either. After close to 20 min total sitting listening to pots and pans banging in the kitchen and no one taking our order, we got up and left. Tip: Good food is only good if there is any service. read more

Authentic, handmade homemade food. As mentioned in a previous review, this place is no frills. It's home-y and simple with Mexican decor. The menus even look home made. In fact, the menus would be easier to read if printed on white paper with black text. You get to seat your self, but that might have been because the place was pretty empty. Food prices are on par for meal sizes for the most part, and water is $1 (per bottle). Guacamole & chips felt a little overpriced ($6.50). Seems there is no soda machine, so even seltzer ($2/bottle) and soda is charged by the unit (no free refills). The place was pretty empty on a Sunday with a total of 4 people, 2 of which had left 1/2 way through our meal. Between 12 and 1:30p there was a fairly large take out order. The phone rang a few times for other take out orders, so business seemed slow but not dead. The family seems really nice and friendly. The mom was doing the cooking by herself, so although waiting for meals seemed long (especially when you are really hungry) it's completely understandable. You can taste the reason for the wait! It seemed her sons were helping out, and they were friendly and pretty timely with presenting the (handwritten) check and accommodating requests. Chips and salsa (green and red) are complimentary once you are seated. Guacamole was delicious and incredibly fresh. The green salsa was so fresh and flavorful it was as if you were eating straight from the garden. The red salsa was fresh and flavorful too. Both had some kick (for ppl who prefer mild), but could have been spicier (coming from a fan of habeneros) and just as delicious. Enchiladas were great, though drizzled with sour cream (not a fan). Oddly, the chicken and vegetarian were priced the same ($9.99) but that also could have been a minor mistake. There were no sides, but there were 5 or 6 enchiladas on the plate topped with lettuce. Oh, and the handmade chips are fabulous...a nice break from the stuff you buy at stores. I agree this place deserves a lot of more business, and am happy to have found it a year later since it's opening. Hopefully word spreads around and business picks up because I'd hate to see a good non-chain eatery close down. This place definitely does some dishes better than others. For awesome tacos that are not overpriced there is no other place I would go in Hunterdon. Lengua tacos with extra lime is my usual order. To start I have lived in New Mexico with phenomenal Mexican food, so perhaps I am a bit biased when it comes to Mexican food. BYOB is a great plus for this place and definitely makes it worthwhile. Very inexpensive. I got he steak a la Mexicana and it was good. However, when we asked for water they brought out bottled water and then proceeded to charge us for it! Also, the chips did not seem like normal chips. They were stale, the salsa was nothing special, and overall it was not anything special like the reviews said. I tried to like the food because I wanted to like the place and give it a shot, but it was definitely not the best Mexican in the area. Truly surprising and well worth the trip. I've lived in the area nearly 30 years and recently returned on a visit, and happened to drive by El Molcajete. "Huh, a mexican restaurant" I thought ... and yes, I was intrigued. My wife was too. She moved to NJ recently from Utah and has been dying to find a great, authentic mexican restaurant. After we finished an errand, we came back and decided to try Molcajete for a late lunch. The atmosphere was fun and service was top notch. I was happily surprised to find they served Hecho en Mexico Coke, with real sugar instead of corn syrup. Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, but it was such a nice touch. Chips and salsa too -- these were a great starter for our meal. My wife ordered the chicken enchilada and I ordered a chicken burrito. We also got a beef quesadilla to share. Everything arrived in good time and boy, were we glad we stopped here! As other reviewers have said, this isn't the typical "tex mex" that is drowned in special sauces... the quesadilla was simply fantastic, tender, tasty steak and cheese with an amazing tortilla. The enchilada and burrito both had refried beans and rice (on the side or inside, respectively) and we both found the beans to be amazing. Creamy and delicious. Perfect. Not dry and pasty as some restaurants make them. By the end of our meal we were head over heels for El Molcajete and look forward to returning soon. Definitely check them out. You'll be surprised by the variety on the menu and the great taste, and fair prices. Don't just drive on by, and don't judge it by the exterior... this is a quaint, astounding little restaurant.
