In it's five boroughs, so rife with Mexicans that Trump considered extending The Wall down 5th Ave, there has not been a place I could find a decent enchilada in 10 yrs. Have I been looking in all the wrong places? Probably. Am I too lazy to go hunt for the right places? 100%. So imagine my luck when I stumble into El Nopal in my newly adopted South Slope hood and ordered up the enchiladas. After 15 years of living in Southern California, I'm picky when it comes to Mexican but I loved the food and drinks here. Happy hour drinks are great- $6 margarita and $4 beers until 6pm everyday. I think I might have to make El Nopal my new post-Ikea lunch spot. The place was mostly empty at 230 on a Sunday--but it had good reviews, so we gave it a whirl. Out of everything, we agreed that the cheese empanadas were the best--but I'm told the huevos rancheros were good, too. My burrito was fine (they put onions inside, which kinda freaked me out) but it was flavorful. I did think the rice was overcooked, but that could be my preference. I tried green iguana upon one employee's suggestions (I always ask staff about their favorites wherever I go. The food: I had the quesadilla and I can honestly say it was fantastic; chicken was tender and bountiful, tortilla golden brown. The presentation looked beautiful and fresh--not greasy. This is an awesome addition to the neighborhood, and it has a really warm, welcoming interior. The food is of course terrific as well and in addition to the usual fare of burritos and tacos they have a huge selection of smoothies and juices on the menu. The waiters and the owners (who are often present) are attentive, personable and efficient. Now on to the food... Excellent and fresh! The tacos (especially Al Pastor and Bistec) are perfectly seasoned, portioned and satisfying! I went on a vegan bender for a bit and their menu had many options thankfully. We always order the guacamole spicy and it's delicious with their house tortilla chips. Their margaritas are strong and tasty too. Wilted salad in tacos, very little seasoning in the shrimp taco which tasted old. They can't even get their margaritas right - served luke-warm. Why is this place always empty!? It's SO good!! They have an extensive selection of fresh juices and smoothies. Their food, chips, salsa are always so fresh and delicious. Not to mention they have vegan/vegetarian options as well for all vegan Mexican food lovers. I personally love the Kale Burrito without any dairy, very flavorful. My friends and I frequent El Nopal. The food is good, service is great, it's quiet, and affordable. Definitely better when you go in then order. Their chips are too thick and overcooked though for my taste. HOWEVER, I REALLY wish this restaurant would switch to environmentally friendly takeout containers. They still use styrofoam and I just cannot support that. Worse yet they wrap it in plastic wrap. Please, please, please make the switch to something recyclable or biodegradable. I have only gotten take out from here, but I am always very satisfied. I usually pick up and the decor looks really cute ad authentic. The service is always friendly. They also seem to have a juice bar. I have had a few things on the menu but always go back for the vegetarian taco. It comes with the two soft corn tortilla shells filled with mushrooms and zuccini with cotija cheese and guacamole. The food is always fresh and I thik its quite affordable. We've been to El Nopal about 4 times over the last 2 months and have been really pleased. The chorizo nachos were a pleasant surprise - so many places just get this dish wrong. At El Nopal it was carefully made and nicely balanced. The chorizo tostadas were terrific - crispy and fully flavored. I've had the pernil twice and really enjoyed it. Again the flavors were well balanced - someone in the kitchen really knows what they're doing. The chicken chipotle was excellent as well and so were the chicken enchilladas. I almost forgot - I had the pork chops there as well and really liked them. My wife has had the roast chicken a number of times and has been really pleased with that. The menu here is extensive and I'm looking forward to trying more things. The cooking is done at a high level and I'm confident there are lots of other real gems on the menu. The atmosphere here is very pleasant - the lights are soft and the service is warm and attentive. The prices are very fair and the portions are generous. You won't walk away hungry. No a big deal. I didn't say anything. I ordered again, this time I called to make sure the chips come with the burrito bowl. Guess what? No chips. So now I call. The employee says to me "are you sure there are no chips in the bag? Because we will check the cameras!" Excuse me??! I ask to speak to owner "he's not here" they don't have his number.
