The food was all genuine Mexican food. It is not blah at all. It's very good. The vibe in here is very good and the music and comfortable seats and everything is great. Food is good, servers are friendly enough. However, I'll never understand why it takes so long to bring guacamole to a table. Twice now it seems like they forgot about it, then bring it out right before the food. I also asked for chicken instead of ground beef in the el Norte taco salad, and got ground beef. After our server dropped off our food, that was the last time she spoke to us before giving us the check and abruptly walking away. Being from Texas I have high expectations.....probably too high but still....I saw all the Mexican restaurants here are all rated about 3 stars. Some post very positive comments...others very negative. This El Norte Mexican Restaurant: The food was OK. Wasn't too bad at all! They could really improve on the bland salsa. It wouldn't take much to turn it into something special. My server was very nice. Overall I was going to rate my experience a very strong 3 leading to a 4 until.....I saw the few jalapeño slices I asked for to give the food a little more flavor came with a charge on my ticket! Most Mexican restaurants have a bowl or jar already at the table a lot of times...but they are charging me for a few slices??? They royally blew it in my book! Very very disappointing! Being from San Diego (very close to the MX border) I wasn't expecting much from this area. Although this doesn't compare to authentic Mexican food in SD, this place was better than I expected! All servers have been attentive and service has been quick. We've ordered chicken, steak and veggie fajitas, and the quesadilla supreme so far on our visits. Red salsa is a little bland and not very spicy, but you can request a green one that's much hotter and has a great flavor to it! When you're on the road from New Orleans to Birmingham and you hit Meridian, MS at lunchtime, options seem bleak. After 20minutes on yelp, our goal had lowered from "something interesting to eat" to "can we please find a drink". When we pulled up to El Norte's strip mall storefront, the sign that said "cantina" convinced us to go inside. If a beer and "at least it's not a buffet" was the best we could do, then so be it. Well, turns out we made a good choice. El Norte's interior features typical flair of a Mexican restaurant: banners with the Mexican flag and wooden tables and booths. We were greeted and sat, with our server immediately bringing complementary chips and salsa and taking our drink orders. The beers were cool and refreshing and served with frosted mugs, a nice touch. The frozen margarita (which comes in three sizes) was whipped by the drink machine to a frothy consistency (good) and was a bright radioactive green (bad). It proved to be more than a tad too sweet. We ordered queso and guacamole with our chips, as we were famished from the long journey. The queso was the tasty white cheese variety, though a little runny. The guacamole was competent and fresh. The restaurant was about half full at lunch and our entrees came out fairly quickly. Chicken fajitas, steak fajitas, quesadilla supreme, and a taco salad. Our server addressed several special side requests adroitly, and while one companion claimed his side of cheese didn't arrive, we were all quite sure he didn't order it. Regardless, it was quickly brought to the table. All of the entrees were competently prepared and fresh. The fajitas arrived on sizzling skillets that stayed hot through the meal. While I don't think anyone is going annoint Meridian, MS as the new little Mexico, we really enjoyed everything we had. Cold beers, fresh food, and friendly service, and we weren't at a buffet or fast food! There was a brief delay to get our check and pay - almost as if they didn't want our money, but that was quickly sorted out. All in all a good meal for a very reasonable price. You could do much worse than stopping at El Norte if you're passing through Meridian. read more

Growing up in Meridian in the 2000s, this place was undeniably a staple of the weekend restaurant scene. Good service and great prices made it a place that was very popular for people to go to with friends and family, and it was always the standard to go to after big events, such as prom or a show. While the food was decent and the atmosphere was lacking, I have always enjoyed it (although, not the best Mexican in the city), and I would recommend to anyone looking for a decently priced place to eat some tacos. read more

Good Mexican place for a southern town. Coming from California this is what you would get at a normal local Mexican restaurant. Service is great and the staff is very friendly. Great drink specials and a happy hour that runs from 1-7pm most days. The fajitas, authentic steak tacos, and the Carne Asada are good and the portions are large. My family of four stopped here on our way home from the beach. My four year old daughter LOVES chips and dip, and my two year old daughter could practically drink the cheese dip. We were seated immediately by a polite young server wearing a mask. Less than 2 minutes later we were given chips and dip with our drink orders being taken. Being from SOCAL it is hard to give a four star rating on Mexican restaurant when you are used to eating super delic hand made tortillas, salsa etc everyday, but El Norte Mexican Restaurant was a pleasant surprise. Despite the unfortunate lack of mahi mahi for my Fish Taco Tuesday tradition, they do have some really cheap margaritas served in little cactus glasses (and the bartender is not stingy on the tequila!). coming from Socal, it is horrible, the food was the whitest Mexican food you could find, the tamales were hard and bland and don't even get me started on the employees there only seemed to be two working out front and they basically lived on their phones and I worked years in the restaurant industry and I know it's a big no-no to have your phone out in front of guests and the margaritas were so watered down it was like drinking juice, I will never go back or recconmend it to anyone read more

This is typical SoCalMex. A lot of people in the south just don't appreciate the greasiness of it. Being as Mississippi is the most obese state in the union the logic behind this is quite the mystery to me. However, it you are used to or craving Mexican in the style traditionally found west of the Colorado river, give this place a try. I eat here once a month (actually I get carry out). Its pretty good. The fajitas are pretty good, though you only get 3 small tortillas so I always have to use one of my own. The nachos norteno is good too. The queso dip is VERY good, but the servers forget to put it in the bag EVERY SINGLE TIME so I've gotten good at opening the double-knotted plastic bag to check. I always tip a dollar but it never gets me more than a small queso dip in return. Oh well, maybe I should save my dollar since they're going to screw up the order anyway! Ordered my favorite; chicken enchilada's. The sauce on top tasted burned. So I ordered a chicken quesadilla even though I had my heart set on the enchiladas. I was charged the difference of the quesadilla and the enchilada.
