Stopped here with a few friends for lunch one weekend. Wasn't really sure what to expect because my friend mentioned that it's a "Latino Sushi" spot. Ordered their Pacifico Pasta. Disgusting. Lacked flavor, shrimp was dirty and the sauce was watery. I told the waitress to please take it back. She said, "That's what you ordered. You're still going to pay for it." I replied, "Yes, but I'd like for you to take it back. I didn't like it. She was like, "I can box it for you." Lady, seriously? Imagine this: You're at the corner of Bellaire @ Renwick. To your left you see a taco stand. To your right, you see a sushi restaurant. Wait, what? No, you're not confused or lost. The owners of Miyako created El Pacifico, a sushi / Asian cuisine restaurant catered towards a Latin audience. This is probably the only place you can say "yo quiero sashimi" and people will know what you're talking about. It's hard to describe what this place is. I think Mr. Miyako would call it a fusion of Asian and Latin cuisine, but I would consider it more a sushi restaurant that has other Asian foods with a small hint of Latin influence. They have the typical things you'd see on Miyako's menu; in fact, they use the same sushi menu as Miyako. But then they also have non sushi items, like Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi), hamburgers, and fried rice. The sushi is decent at best. It's definitely much better at Miyako. They also put too much sauce on the rolls, making it a too salty for my taste. The waitstaff also leaves a lot to be desired. Spanish is definitely the preferred language here so I think a lot gets lost in translation when you're ordering. If you have a big group, they don't remember who ordered what and just wait for you to identify your dish when they bring it out. They do have a few pros though. This restaurant is pretty big, and the furniture is nice. They have tables that can be combined for large groups and also U-shaped booths. There's also a massive projector screen (I'm talking 100+ inches) that's broadcasting soccer games and some lounge seating around it. They also have smaller flat screen TVs all around the restaurant. The best thing about this place is the live music that they have on weekends. TropiCrew plays here on Friday nights, and if you're not familiar with them, their lead singer is the former lead singer from Salmerum (Houston's most well known salsa band). There's plenty of space to dance too! But once the music starts playing, it's really hard to have a conversation because it's so loud. Would I come here specifically for sushi? No. I'd come here for a night of drinks and dancing when I want to eat something other than Tex-Mex or Latin food (in comparison to say, Mi Luna or Taco Milagro). read more

This restaurant has been open for about three weeks now. It's the second restaurant I have found recently that fuses Hispanic and Asian cuisine. The owner of El Pacifico also owns Miyako. Interior. It's my favorite part of the restaurant experience. The restaurant features a beautiful color combination of teal and brown. On the right, there are round tables with straw chairs. Around the perimeter there are booths that seat 4-6 people. This place scores 5 stars in my book for ambiance. I regret not having my digital camera with me! Service. It was a strange coincidence to learn that the hostess had my first name. And that the restaurant manager had my last name. What are the odds? ;o) Our waitress was very attentive. She was willing to answer menu questions. Believe me, I had many. She also helped me eat my meal with chopsticks, a first. I was so proud of myself. The busgirl was a bit too eager; she would stop by the table a bit too often to ask if we were done with the food. I didn't like the frequency or tone of voice. I felt I was being rushed to finish my course. Food. The food was presented beautifully. I swear I saw a sashimi where the it looked like roses. The well presented entrees deserve 5 stars. I like how the sauces were served in cute rectangular vessell. I'll summarize my impression of the food flavors. Chino Burrito-- a little too much hosin sauce overpowered other flavors and made overall burrito salty. Gyoza-- savory appetizer that tasted good with ponzu sauce Vegetable Soup-- very tasty, reminded me of something I'd make at home House Salad--- I liked the fresh veggies and the dressing Salmon Platter--- it tasted great with the sauce; the name of the sauce wasn't listed on the menu. Chocolate Shot-- was bitter; that dark chocolate mousse tasted funny Banana Tempura--- not sweet enough, ice cream/chocolate/nuts good Value. In the end, we paid $40 for two people; considering we received two beverages, two appetizers, two entrees, and two desserts it was a great deal. Most entrees are under $15. Mother Bear's Opinion. My mother was really displeased with the food and service. Thank goodness she isn't a yelper. Her entree was cold, a pet peeve. She thought that they didn't have many customers that evening to justify cold food. Warning: the heat lamp must not be working yet. The overly crunchy fried shrimp led to a startling conclusion. And the fried shrimp weren't peeled before being fried. She found her fried rice to be bland. Then again, she is probably used to fried rice having the ideal amount of soy sauce in advance. The salad dressing too sweet for her liking. She did enjoy the soccer game that was being played against the TV. The TV was more like a projector screen 10 feet wide by 6 high. The other patrons seemed to enjoy the game as well. Final Verdict. The ambiance and reasonable prices make El Pacifico a winner. Good place to have friends and family over. It gets very crowded during night so make sure you come early. Never been late enough where the live band has played but I heard they are very good. This place has potential. I drove past it a week back, and just so happened to in the mood for trying a new restaurant later that day. Pacifico offers an interesting blend of entrees and style. The interior, was spacious and the night we went a live band was just setting up. As for food, we had the dinner for two. The fish and fried rice were good but our miso soup was warm, as opposed to hot. So they lost points there, because it was not crowded. As for the staff, the managers and waitresses seemed very nice, I do have an issue with the fact that I asked my waitresses how long the restruants been open and she said, "3" I'm not from Houston, so unfortunally had to guess if that was 3 days/weeks/years? I've worked in the industry before so I have faith that her English conversation skills will improve with some time. But again, kind of killing the mood of asking any other questions. I lived in Hawaii before moving here so I've experienced fusion done well, and this isn't it. But Pacifico, does have promise and I just hope it's just going through it's growing pains. read more

Went here to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary only to end up being disappointed. A group of us decided to try this place out. Without saying too much, we had experts on both sushi and Mexican seafood present. Some of the dishes were pretty good. The Vietnamese sandwiches were good, and the bread supposedly comes from the French Riviera bakery on Chimney Rock. I got the ceviche tostada, I think it was called the Tostada Samba or something like that, and it was good. Most of the food, however, was fairly average. The sashimi was just ok. The rolls were ok. It was sort of like what you get at Miyako's but not quite as good. The manager told us that there will be another chef there next week that will do a better job, but I think I'll give it a little more time before I go back. The absolute worst thing about this place is the service. Since they are so new, they screwed up several orders, most of which were fixed quickly, but a few things were not satisfactory at all. One gentleman in our group didn't get his food until everyone else was finished eating (sorry, we're not a polite bunch, but we can't let our raw meat sit for too long.) They also gave us the wrong checks at the end. The other major problem is that they didn't give enough of the little plates for putting the soy sauce and other stuff in for dipping the sushi into. Overall I will give this place at least one more try, but it will be after at least one month of a wait. I was called after placing the order and told that soup is not included for dine out, just dine in. Okay. So why was it necessary to select a soup in order to order online? When the food was delivered it was missing 3 of the side dishes. The request for crema was ignored. As I'm reviewing the menu, I'm like ok there's several things that will satisfy my taste buds and I was pretty darn excited! I ordered the combination nice and spicy boiled shrimp (my favorite). I was very excited to try this place out, mainly because I needed to have one of those super cute piña coladas all my friend's had been raving about...I must say it was a neat experience drinking straight from a pineapple, it was good, but I wouldn't order it again, it was very runny, I prefer a thicker consistency on frozen coladas. Moving on to the food, we ordered a fried fish taco, the Toreado Sushi plate, and the Fried Catfish combination platter. The food was decent, just felt like we needed to add a little lime juice to kick-up the flavors. We were impressed by the sushi rolls, but we didn't get the tampico sauce that it comes with; we requested the mayo and hot sauce instead. The only thing that would keep me from going back is their service, it's not a cheap place so you'd expect better service. Yesterday my friends and I decided to go out for dinner and drinks at Pacifico. I was quite excited as It was going to be my first time there. We sat down and it took the server 10 minutes to get to us. She seemed busy and it is crazy because 3 servers were just standing there by the POS not helping out. We got our drinks and then our other friends arrived around 9. We ordered more drinks and dinner and were having a good time. Then around 10:15 the server says my friend had to go put on a shirt or leave, he was wearing a muscle shirt. We asked to speak to the manager because it just seem crazy the restaurant did not have a sign about a dress code and my friend was not told anything when he came in. Uriel came and apologized but said it is a rule we have. Also, there was 3 servers just standing there pointing at us and laughing. Which I found extremely rude. Uriel let us stay so we continued to have drinks and around 11:15 Uriel came to the table again and told my friend that he needed to put a shirt on or leave. I work in the food and beverage industry as well and don't appreciate the way this situation was handled nor the rudeness of the servers which we did get their names (Magally, Marlene, Lina) If your gonna have a dress code you need to tell people before the sit down and spend almost $200. Unless you're a plutocrat with a desire to spend money on crappy food, don't waste your time. The quality does not match the prices charged, nor does the menu flex any creativity. Mexican/latin cuisine is still prepared in the same manner and the asian menu items are still asian. There's no creativity. El Pacifico. This is a Japanese/Latin fusion restaurant located in a very hispanic/asian part of town so as far as the location, it's brilliant. Its attached to other stores and restaurants so it's not the easiest place to spot. First impression walking in is wow this is a neat hole in the wall restaurant. The atmosphere and the decor isn't very fancy but definitely different. I got good service from the server and was recommended to try the Chilango roll. The food is spot on with the Chilango rocking snow crab and shrimp, jalapeno, thinly sliced strawberries, covered with fried onions, and drizzled with a spicy mayo like sauce. The result is like a party in your mouth and everyone is dancing to salsa music. That being said my biggest complaint would be the pricing on some of the more expensive plates and how difficult it is to match spending so much in a very modest looking establishment. Even the menu design isn't very appealing. A great restaurant should not hold back even in the smallest details.
