Yes, cash only, and to whoever said they don't have tables, well, they do. I love the tortillas because they taste fresh and aren't salty like those at Golden Pride, Frontier, and Garcia's. The chile relleno burritos are delicious, as are the lengua, barbacoa, and carne asada tacos. Didn't try the drinks, but the water was icy cold. All the tables needed a good wipe down, but they put out paper towels and that was easy enough to take care of. The music was really loud, so we sat indoors. Recommend the food. I'd order takeaway next time.

We read about this place somewhere on the internet, where it was described as one of the best inexpensive restaurants in the country. And we had been driving past it five times a week, 10 times if you count both directions. So we thought we would stop in for lunch. It's plain, the decor is nothing special, but you won't care. The food is amazing! Very Mexican, not at all New Mexican. My wife had the avocado torta, and the bread was amazing. I had a carnitas burrito, which was the best burrito I've had in a long, long time. We will be back.

I stopped in and ordered two tacos, a mole burrito, and an horchata. Sadly, nothing stood out in fact, it was a letdown. The al pastor taco was flavorless and didn't resemble any authentic pastor I've had before. The carne asada taco also lacked seasoning and had a strange aftertaste I couldn't place. Both tacos came with only one tortilla (which I found odd, but surprisingly didn't miss). I asked to try all their salsas, since salsa can make or break a taco but they only gave me two and mentioned there was a charge for more. The avocado salsa was bland, and I couldn't even taste avocado. The red salsa lacked any depth or spice. The mole burrito was literally just chicken and mole inside a tortilla no rice, no toppings, nothing. I expected a bit more balance or creativity. Service was average not rude, but not particularly welcoming either. The space itself was neutral and didn't add much ambiance to the meal. Overall, there's potential here, but they need to step up their flavor game, improve hospitality, and refine their menu to match expectations.

Their gorditas are absolutely to die for! Specifically our favorites are their Desherbada en Rojo (red chile , potatoes, shredded beef) and their Frijol con Queso. The ambience is what you'd expect from a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant but the food but it does certainly highlight the community and history of the South Valley

I don't know where to start!!! This is the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been. We got burrito, tacos and Gordita! Nothing had disappointed at all. The con was only cash but hey just go to the ATM and get some $$$.

True Mexican culinary heaven! I am thrilled to stumble across El Paisa. This is truly a hole-in-the-wall that takes care of every detail in preparing Mexican food. I had a bit of trouble ordering food. Thankfully, one of the staffs was able to help with translation. I was recommended to try their shrimp soup, as their menudo (i.e. tripe soup) was out. That didn't disappoint! The soup has delicious shrimp flavors, with plenty of shrimps, carrots and celery. It comes with delicious crispy bread. The ambience is casual. Most of its customers are Mexicans. It really speaks to the authenticity of their food. I can't wait to come back to try other items on the menu when I am in the area!

The tacos are amazing!!!! It's cash only, so make sure you have some cash with you to enjoy the great food. The price is very cheap tho, $2.5 for a taco. Their lengua is very tender and juicy, the buche is absolutely flavorful!! The sauce was also very good. They have a large indoor seating area and the wait is short on Saturday evening.

El paisa isn't the same compared to 20 years ago; carne asada and el pastor was super tough and dry. Price definitely has gone wayyy up; but the quality of the food has gone wayyy down. Service was acceptable; nothing to brag about. No ambiance at all, so don't take your date there. Better place down the street, I hate to see a old stable like el paisa ending up like this. read more

My friend Yvette and I love a good taco. We happened to find a list of the Best Tacos in every state. El Paisa won for New Mexico. The food here is authentic, real, tacos. I tried two types barbacoa and asada, both were very good, but I think I preferred the barbacoa. I had a cup of horchata, which was also full of flavor and very large. They have a small salsa bar with various types, I tried each of the three that were out that day, but like the verde sauce best. The prices are low, they are cash only. Make sure you park in their fenced in parking lot. It's not the best part of town. My friend and I did not park in their lot and were greeted by a man shooting up who then followed us into El Paisa. It didn't change my opinion of the tacos, just being more cognizant of where I park. read more

As you can see the difference. Everybody hyped up this place for tacos and people are crazy. I had real good tacos in Mexico and California. I come here and it's like going from a Samsung tv to a onn tv those cheap TVs from Walmart. Pictures speak for its self read more

Wow! The food here is amazing! We've ordered a few things in the past, but I keep coming back to the chicken molé burrito. Hard to find molé, much less fantastic molé. The burritos here are filling and delicious. The staff are nice and very appreciative of compliments. We will continue to stop whenever we are in Albuquerque. If I knew it would freeze well I'd bring some home with us. read more

Best tacos I've EVER HAD. By far. ( I'm sorry, my beloved Buford Highway in Atlanta, you have good tacos, but El Paisa has you beat. I'm sorry Austin, you have excellent tacos too, but El Paisa has you beat too.) Carne Asada and Carnitas all the way. And the people running the place are super cheerful and friendly. We liked it so much on our way into Santa Fe (driving from Albuquerque), we stopped again on our way back to the airport on our way out. Also delicious agua frescas. Don't miss this gem. read more

Tacos were good but this seems like a place for locals. We had the street tacos, just meat and tortilla unless you get the raw onion and cilantro mix added. The salsa is served in tiny plastic bags that are hand knotted at the top, they didn't have Mexican coke, which I like, and the coke they do serve was in the plastic bottle, which I do not like. The ladies at the windows where you order and pickup were somewhat abrupt, just no nonsense kind of gals, not rude but curt, all business! Prices were absolutely reasonable, which is why there were so many local workmen, single diners and some small children. read more

Best taco spot in town by far can't get any better. They females are amazing helpful bilingual not pricey well worth the pay if anything. The meat in so juicy especially Wednesdays and Thursday 110% recommended coming from a regular. read more

Iv'e been coming to Paisas for over 20 years. Never had a bad experience. But Valentines day the food was not what I've ever experienced. The Pavo in the torta tasted like it had been sitting in stale oil. The barbacoa tacos were so oily the tortilla was mushy, and falling apart. The Carne asada was crispy crumbles of meat. The lengua was also oily and mushy tortilla.We didn't mind the hour wait,because we know the food is phenomenal.But it turned out to be a bust. I do have the give them props for the salsa.Thats always on point. I won't write it off ,I'll try again. Maybe they're having a bad night. I do have to say ,I'd really wish they'd correct their sewage drain inside the building. The smell can be unpleasant. read more

This place is legit Mexican food. No added fluff. No filler just pure burritos and tacos. I don't even eat cow tongue (lengua) always hated it but I tried one just to say I took a bit of one and holy moly it was amazing. The carne asada is amazing and so is the chicharrón burro. Wow! Was passing through town and it was looking for something good and quick because we still had 2 more hours of driving. Wife found this and had good reviews and can't say enough about how good it was. Wife was concerned when she saw reviews saying workers spoke mostly Spanish, but it wasn't a problem. Many of the workers and clientele don't speak English, but the lady taking orders did. Everyone was very nice and the food was fantastic and dirt cheap! Got five tacos, Al pastor and barbacoa (both great!), plus a chile relleno burrito and two agua frescas for $18.50! Plus threw a couple singles in the tip jar. Food came out hot, salsas are all great with nice spice, red was very spicy, my fave. I can't say enough good about it. It's family-owned, nice people, great food. It's not fine dining and I wouldn't suggest wearing a white shirt, but otherwise, totally worth it. I can't get out of a chain fast food place for less than $20, and here is got fresh food that never saw a microwave! Just remember to bring cash$$ read more

Very good taqueria. Stopped by for a few tacos before a United game. Carne asada and carnitas tacos were really good, as was the chile relleno gordita with the corn masa. The salsas were also on point. Great tacos for a great price. read more

I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said. Great, great, great, food, and cheap. I got 4 tacos: carnitas, pastor, asada, and barbacoa, and a medium horchata. $7. Thankful I don't live in Albuquerque or they'd never be able to get me to leave. As others have mentioned, but it bears emphasizing, the place is cash only so show up with greenbacks. That being said, it'd be pretty hard for one person to spend more than $10 here for themselves. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. Ordered a few tacos and a torta and it took almost 30 min to come out. Food wasn't even hot or edible. The carne asada tacos had massive tough chunks of meat with fat still on them. Pretty sure it wasn't beef either. More like road kill. Torta bread was disintegrating from how old and stale it was. Plain bland low quality food. On the way out we saw a cucaracha by the door. Run far away! read more

The building doesn't give it justice but in a way it feels homey and authentic. Almost feel transported to a place in latin America. Food was amazing for a very affordable price. Staff is super friendly as well. The only 2 things to be aware is cash only and the street is on can be a little loud but i could care less because the food and price are not gonna be beat anywhere. Absolutely making this place one to come back a regular basis. Food was so good i didnt even snap a picture. We got a steak torta and carnitas tacos. read more

We went there on our road trip across country when stopped in for some lunch. Due to covid the inside was closed for dine in and they had set up a line for social distancing and didn't allow many people in at the same time. Which was great. It is a whole in the wall gem of a place. We got all the tacos as they were only a $1.50 cents and got a asada gordita. Pros: simple menu, great prices, immense flavor (highly recommend pastor, asada, barbacoa), great portion size, authentic street style, have great juices as well, fast service, and good portion size. Cons: packing could have been a little better as my tacos were smashed together where some tortillas split but it still tasted amazing. Please do stop by to try this place. If I travel there again I will definitely stop by again. Love love loved it there. read more

This was real Mexican food! El Paisa is in the heart of the historic Barelas neighborhood, just down the street from the Hispanic Cultural Center. The parking was a little tight, on the east side of the building. They had indoor and outdoor seating and the ambiance was extremely casual with pictures and posters of Mexico on the wall. The cashier spoke both English and Spanish and the wall menu was very easy to read. I ordered a liter of Coke, which came in a real glass bottle. I have always argued this is the ONLY way to enjoy Coca-Cola. I also ordered a Relleno burrito, tostada de ceviche, and a bean burrito. I found out the entrées are very generous and I could barely walk out after downing this much food. The burritos came wrapped in foil on top of paper plates, which made the dining experience more authentic for me. The bean burrito was average, but the ceviche tostada was light, refreshing, and flavorful and I would highly recommend it. I also enjoyed the green chile Relleno, which had just the right amount of heat and stuffed with a generous amount of cheese. My buddy ordered the Horchata, which he couldn't stop talking about. He also ate a barbacoa torta and a bean burrito. He loved the torta and said one could have probably filled him up. The salsa bar was definitely worth visiting. It had a selection of four, including a wonderful green salsa. These salsas are very flavorful, without being overly hot. The only reason I gave four instead of five stars was because the parking was so close. read more

Was driving through NM and stopped to eat. the other place down the road gave us the creeps and we gave this place a try. It's definitely very authentic mexican food, had barbacoa and chicharones gorditas, asada burito and tostada ceviche and they were all delicious. the only down side was the fact that they take cash only and that is a major issue for me because I do not carry cash most of the time. otherwise the food was great, the place was unique and people were ok read more

This little place is an absolute gem. They have the most authentic tacos and Mexican street fare I've ever had in the US. I will say as a monolingual white person I was a little intimidated the first time as the staff speaks predomintely spanish and most of the customers do as well. With that said I've never had a problem ordering and everyone has always been nice when I'm there. They are cash only but I'm sure that is why they can have such fantastic prices. My go to is the asada tacos and my boyfriend is in love with the lengua tacos. Their horchata is also great. I will say there burritos are not my favorite but that is due to preference of what goes in my burritos more than anything. It can get pretty busy at peak lunch and dinner time but the food is worth the wait. Would recommend to everyone ! read more

Went here per reviews and was disappointed. Since we were in NM and they're famous for their Mexican food I was really excited for authentic Mexican tacos. I got one Asada Taco and one Barbacoa Taco. The meat was really fatty and pretty hard. I purchased bean and rice as a side, not bad. But I also got chips and they were extremely stale and hard. Not the worst mexican I've ever had, just had really high expectations and it did not come close to meeting them. They were takeout only because of COVID. Their restrooms were closed to the public and they were CASH ONLY ( but that wasn't a problem for us). Limited parking out front on the road, so you can park in back. read more

Guess you have to be Hispanic in order to get good food and be able to make good reviews. We had two separate orders. My order was two carne asada burritos. I asked what comes in the burrito. One was supposed to be all the way, add cheese. Other is supposed to been everything with no cilantro and onions. I thought tacos come with onions and cilantro they do every where else. I received two plain burritos and two tacos with just meat and cheese. What's the point of saying the order back if you just going to make it like you want it. Then they bagged all our food together but we didn't order together. When I told them that one burrito was just supposed to not have onions and cilantro I'm told I have to pay a dollar more. Then after biting my burrito I had to go back in. I very calmly said my burrito was supposed to have everything on it. I'm then asked what do I want. I calmly said I just wanted a burrito the way you said it came. Nowhere in my order did I say plain anything. After she took my burrito after handling money and no hands washed I politely asked for my money back. Guess I was asking too much to get the food I seen on Yelp. I had heard this place was the best Mexican food in Albuquerque and it really didn't disappoint. I've actually found it pretty difficult to find an authentic good taqueria in Albuquerque - until I went to El Paisa. I ordered 2 Barbacoa Tacos and their Asada Burrito. They came incredible quickly and they didn't fall short of my expectations. The Barbacoa was as tender as any I've ever had and the Asada in the burrito had a beautiful smoky char that's often missing from an Asada burrito. This place is fantastic, if you've not been I would highly recommend you go. read more

Worst place to even think of eating. Went in ordered my food sat down opened my chicharron gordita. Stay away if you don't like squishy slimmy chicharrones. I took one bit nearly puked. Asked for a refund or an exchange for something else. Guess what they said. They don't do stand by there work. So no refunds or exchanges. The end bye El Paisa.
