When I ordered directly off the menu a salad with 3 ingredients listed on me i they adlibbed and added beans and pico- my allergens to it without it being listed in menu. Claimed it came that way. Then delivered it again without dressing 20 minutes later. Awful horrible service. No apology, no credit, nothing. Took 20 minutes to get a drink. Save your time, don't go. This restaurant needs to be put out of business. I never write bad reviews only positive ones. So it took a lot to get me here. The best and hardworking person in there was the hostess. Hands-down my favorite Sunday brunch and Taco Tuesday spot in town. El Paseo is a nostalgic SB fixture. It's really one-of-a-kind in a historic plaza with what I guess you'd call a large atrium of a venue. Santa Barbara's mild climate allows this place to host their outside dining year round. This place, while a bit pricy, is a cut above the competition. It's authentic and romantic, all while maintaining a casual vibe. The food is made with pride and care, and it's no wonder why the spot is always jamming. The buffets this place hosts are the best in Santa Barbara. I've never seen one cleaner and more carefully operated than El Paseo. The food appears and tastes fresh, and there is a good abundance. A far cry from what one would envision buffet fare as. For $8.95, you can't go wrong with the all-you-can-eat style of Taco Tuesday. The cocktails are good but VERY expensive. During the week, a happy hour runs until 6pm. Ate everything and used the fondue fountain as well as got two of my favorite creme brulee for dessert. The restaurant is located in one humongous dining room with an incredibly high ceiling. It is obviously located in a historic building of some type and there are architectural touches throughout which are gorgeous. The Bad (and there's plenty of Bad): The service. Well, if we had actually received some service, I might be able to comment more. They weren't that busy yet our waiter disappeared for 10-15 minutes at a time. Also, I'd like to thank him for the basket of chips for the 4 of us here except do you think we could have more than half a basket next time? Did you grab the basket from someone else's table? Napkins would be nice, too, in the future. He also never brought us the food we actually did order so I can't review it. At least, we weren't charged for the food which never came. Very disappointing. I would give the place another chance but not with that particular server. The margaritas were decent. That's the best I can say. read more

After reading the Yelp reviews which are all over the map, I was anxious to give this place a go again after visiting a couple of years ago. Our friends have been coming here for years, and like to arrive early at 4 when happy hour starts and grab one of the booths that overlook the beautiful indoor/outdoor patio, and enjoy Taco Tuesday. By the time we left, there were dozens of people waiting and the large bar area was packed. Our friends and hubby started with happy hour margaritas and I had a vodka cranberry that had a hint of pink to the ample vodka. They hand mix their margarita ingredients, no store bought mix here. Chips are light and crisp, salsas are okay. When I asked for something hotter, our friendly waitress brought me some flavorful Hot stuff. It always pays to ask. The appetizers are half price on happy hour, so we shared some nachos with good guacamole. My husband and friend wandered over to check out the taco bar at $10 all you can eat, and came back to the table with loaded plates. I opted for another appetizer-strips of pasilla chiles in a nice sauce with delicious handmade corn tortillas. The flour tortillas were quite good too. You can watch them being made in the corner booth. The other appetizer we shared was the shrimp diablo over mashed potatoes which was very flavorful and nicely prepared. Gave one star, only because I had to. This place has the potential to thrive, but until they get a new chef, new management, and new workers, it won't. The food is not good quality...nothing better than what you can get in the frozen food section of your local market. The majority of the food is not warm, as the heating cans have run out of fuel. The entrees are not labeled, so you have no idea what some of the dishes are. The lids are not closed after customers leave them open. The serving utensils are sticky and caked with food... they should periodically be replaced with clean utensils. The homemade tortillas are thick, cold and the serving container was mostly empty. The omelet bar was headed up by a young girl that completely cooked the egg, then merely tossed the cold ingredients on top of it, then flipped half of the egg on top of that! This is not the way to prepare an omelet. The fresh fruit/dessert bar is a joke. Most of the trays are empty, and the cheesecake items (the majority of choices) have been out of refrigeration for so long and with the open ceiling allowing the sun to pour directly on them, they are a mushy mess. We waited 35 minutes for the manager to have the fruit and desserts replenished....guess what...it didn't happen. If you opt for the endless mimosas, be prepared to ask for refills, they won't do it on their own. Any refills for that matter. There is no air conditioning, and there are no fans to circulate the air...very uncomfortable in the summer! Don't bother bringing any deficiencies to the attention of the manager...she doesn't care...save your money and chose a different restaurant...any restaurant!! read more

I just had my wedding Reception at El Paseo on May 25th and I had the best day of my life. Paul, Victor, Tyer, and Chef Alex made our dream wedding a reality. Paul (the owner) worked with us every step of the way and gave us so many great suggestions which made the day awesome! We chose a delicious Mexican buffet and Chef Alex customized everything to our specific taste and preferences (carnitas enchiladas, chicken chimichangas, steak medallions, chile rellenos, and lots of other items). I am still getting emails and calls about how AMAZING the food was and how BEAUTIFUL the venue was. El Paseo helped decorate and break everything down. The staff was attentive and they took care of my guests. The bartenders were awesome and they kept the drinks flowing and the party moving. I wish I could do it all over again. El Paseo will always be my special place now. On a side note, I have been to El Paseo several times for dinner and drinks. The food is great and the ambiance is relaxing and fun. We had our wedding here in early June. The place was stunning, the food was wonderful, and from what we were told the drinks were strong. Please see my photos for the food set up, gorgeous! Tyr was AMAZING to work with!! He was so respectful and helpful with us not knowing what the heck we were doing. Always prompt to reply to my hysterical emails. Only downside was that I had spoken to Tyr about doing drink vouchers and we brought them into the venue on the day of the wedding and the bartender through a fit about it. Not accepting them until my groom went up to them and sternly told them to take it. Other than that it went well. I say get a day of coordinator to pre-set the venue with your decorations before hand and not leave it up to the restaurant staff. Oooh they also had kid menus for events so no need to spend $45 for a kids meal. read more

El Paseo in Santa Barbara is the absolute best place to have your wedding reception. First of all, it was in close proximity to El Presidio Chapel where our ceremony was held. It has an indoor with an outdoor feel. The restaurant's architecture is to die for and it is one of the historic buildings in SB. We can't say enough about the wonderful staff Chef Alex, Victor, Tyr, and the owner Paul! They went above and beyond. They have weddings very organized and their wait staff is very kind to all the guests. We had 133 guests and everyone had an amazing time. My guests raved about the o'dourves (shrimp a la diabla, mole skewers, stuffed mushrooms with chorizo). We opted for buffet style and my guests were able to try everything. We had Rib Eye steak, Salmon, Chile Rellenos, and Pipian as our main dishes (with two salads). The food doesn't taste like typical wedding hotel food, it has great flavor and carefully prepared. Since the venue was reasonable, we were even able to have open bar. The guests also mentioned that the drinks were very good and the bartenders were efficient. El Paseo makes accommodations for your photo booth, DJ, and photographers. I feel that our wedding was successful because of the El Paseo Staff. They KNOW what they are doing. We had our wedding reception at El Paseo on November 9, 2013 after getting married at the SB Courthouse. Wow, we could not have hoped for a better experience! Paul and Tyr were both great with planning everything- it's true, if you have their help you really don't need a wedding planner at all. We got a great deal on a lunchtime reception for 60 guests; we started planning our wedding in August and El Paseo worked wonderfully with our fast timeline! Our wedding was on the smaller side but even with only 60 people it didn't seem like the place was empty; this place can accommodate a LOT of people but also works well if your party isn't huge. Our guests loved the outdoor space, which looked beautiful with our flowers and the architecture of this old building. We had a lot of family who had never been to California before and this was a really unique experience for them. My husband and I had the semi-dramatic entrance to music down the cute stairs and our photographer got some beautiful shots at the party. The dance floor was perfect and our friends were easily able to DJ our party with an ipod, Spotify, youtube, etc; they had everything set up for us and we brought our own devices. Everything we did was pretty DIY and I have to say I experienced zero stress on our wedding day. The cake, cupcakes, and flowers were all easily dropped off. Our guests were comfortable and happy even before we arrived. Food was absolutely delicious- Chef Alex is amazing. Our vegan guests were the most vocal about the food; a lot of friends said they had never had a vegan option at a wedding before that they absolutely loved. Appetizers were so good and they put each kind of appetizer on a special plate so my husband and I could also try them after taking pictures with our family. Mic worked great for speeches and announcements. Cake was cut perfectly after we got cut the first slice. Everything went so smoothly. If you have your wedding reception here (especially off season.. November was great!) you will get an amazing deal. We had an open bar the entire time and every guest left happy. Even though we had the party from 11 am - 4 pm our guests danced a bunch and partied pretty hard. We didn't have to worry about dealing with cruddy rental companies or cleaning up everything afterwards. Tyr checked in on us the entire day.. Taco Tuesday is a good deal, at around 9 dollars you get an all you can eat protein. Great if you're trying to bulk up or just eat a ton of average food. But the service here was infuriating, it took about 10 minutes each time we tried to get drinks. It was also our friend's birthday when we came, we told them multiple times and they never came to do a birthday surprise for him. Maybe this restaurant doesn't do bday surprises, but lo and behold a table nearby had the Bday sung twice and got a cake from the servers. I had half a mind to give 0% tip. read more

I attended a wedding recently and the food and service were amazing. We started off with plenty of appetizers and the salad was delicious. Lots of avocado and very filling. The main dish was salmon, steak or chicken. I had the salmon and it was thick and cooked just right. My husband had the steak and it was a good size rib eye. He said it was delicious. Plenty of vegetables and meats, enough to satisfy both veggies and meateaters. Decent place for larger parties/banquets, not sure for standard sit-down dinners. Servers are really friendly, everyone else so-so. Food was either really salty (mostly the meats) or really bland. The bathrooms are dark and creepy (and possibly dirty? Not sure, couldn't see), and seating around the corners felt a little left out. Thia review is for happy hour only, which I think is Monday - Friday until 6:00 pm. I would not go to this restaurant outside of happy hour because the prices would be way too expensive. The $4.95 margaritas, which felt stronger than average, in a large water glass is a great deal. All the appetizers are also half off, mostly ending up around $5 each. The only thing I would warn is that the nachos have salsa, sour cream, and guacamole on them, which wasn't mentioned on the menu. The location is great, right off downtown State St. The building is really beautiful with the large, open atrium. I'd definitely be back for happy hour. read more

This is an absolutely lovely tucked away location. It's a beautiful open air setting with a fountain and lights and tables with tablecloths & cloth napkins. The chips are good with the 3?salsas. I ordered a margarita on the rocks. It was quite the potent margarita. I had a combo platter with the carne asada taco with a chicken tamale and rice & black beans. The tamale was the best thing I had. Next time I would get two chicken tamales they were that good. They came with a red sauce which was really good. The rice was good and made right. The black beans were flavorful and topped with cotija cheese. The carne asada taco was a bit greasy abut it came with guacamole and a spritz of lime really brightened up. Ask for limes. read more

Came here after stepping into Los Agaves Restaurant around 8pm & standing in a line that hardly moved for 10 minutes, stressing that it would be a challenge to seat a party of 8 in its crowded seating area. We remembered having a wonderful experience @ a different Mexican restaurant in Santa Barbara but couldn't remember the name. Yelp to the rescue! Ta-Daa! We did an about-face and headed straight to El Paseo Restaurant. Valet parking was $6, guys there were friendly & helpful. I had guests who never had stepped foot on U.S. soil & never had Mexican food before so I welcomed the change in aesthetics from Los Agaves to El Paseo. Gone was the stuffy, crowded "you're in my space" kind of feeling to a spacious, high ceiling, festive vibe. Mariachi music was playing in the background. Love the feeling that you have just escaped into a huge Hispanic courtyard filled with tall trees, all adorned with Christmas lighting (all white lights). There is an actual tent that serves as the ceiling but appropriately positioned heating lamps kept us warm during our visit. We were seated promptly and had ample room without hitting someone else's chair. My guests said as we sat down, "Oh, this is so much better." Nice first impression. Staff was pleasant and attentive. Prices were no different than Los Agaves. Chips & salsa came to the table as we chose a few items from the menu... GUACAMOLE (from the bocadillos/appetizers): AMAZING!!!! Never have had someone come to your table and prepare FRESH guacamole in front of you. You can choose mild or spicy. It was absolutely delicious! That disappeared quickly. There was enough for our party of 8 to enjoy without losing one's appetite. Oh, my first timers loved this! TAQUITOS (from the bocadillos/appetizers): Chicken or beef options, we chose chicken. 2 pieces per order. Average size. Good taste, good crunch, not greasy at all. ALAMBRES DE CAMARON (from Mariscos): adobo glazed grilled shrimp, chorizo mashed potatoes, sauteed veggies. This was enjoyed. Wonderful taste to shrimp, not overcooked at all. Chorizo mash was different and tasted quite good. Veggies were still crisp (i like that) and definitely flavorful. RIBEYE CON CHAMPINONES (from Carne Y Pollo): Ribeye steak, grilled baby mushrooms, veggies & pasilla chile potato puree. Devoured by my 10 y/o son. Asked for it to be cooked "medium" and that's what we got... love when that happens. Ribeye was tasty, not chewy at all, easy to eat & enjoy. Rest of the plate disappeared before I could try it. Yeah, he kinda liked it, huh! COMBINACIONES WITH TACO DE CARNE ASADA & CHICKEN TAMALE: Comes with spanish rice and black beans, both tasty. Chicken tamale was average size with good taste. Carne Asada taco was in a somewhat thick corn tortilla, but asada was tender and flavorful. Nothing to complain about here. POLLO CON MOLE POBLANO (from Carne Y Pollo): Sauteed fresh chicken breast in the original mole poblano, with rice & beans. Chicken was tender and moist, not chewy at all. Spanish rice and black beans. That was enjoyed. KIDS CHICKEN TACO: Shredded chicken in a tasty marinade in a somewhat thick corn tortilla. Came with spanish rice & black beans. The kids ate only half of it because they were full from the initial chips & guacamole. They both said they liked it, though. I think that their taco corn tortilla may be too thick for a kids mouth. I've come here for the taco Tuesday special which is an unlimited taco bar for $6.95 [with tax $7.51]. It is pretty bomb and you will leave stuffed and unable to do anything for a good 4 hours later. You can get flour, corn or hard-shell tacos and fill it with your choice of: rice, beans, 3 types of meat, onions, lettuce, cheese, pico de gallo, and sauce. You are served chips at your table with different salsa options. You help yourself to the taco buffet. One time I went the waiter was very good about the chips and refilling drinks the second time not so much. read more

If they'd been short staffed or super busy I could have forgiven them, but our server was looking at photos one someone else's phone, and all the other staff were clearing and laying tables. I suggest advertising correct business hours and expecting costumer dissatisfaction when not seated during restaurant hours. In addition when we expressed confusion we were helped by one of the rudest hostesses I have come across (being a hostess myself) . Insanely unprofessional. This restaurant was so great, from ambiance to food to staff and cleanliness are all excellent. We had brunch for my sons birthday with few of his friends and I was really impressed. I've been so many Mexican restaurants and this by far the best I always love ambiance and the food was really amazing so many choices on the buffet and all of them we're good. Two {dos} words: Taco Tuesday! They have a very reasonably priced all-you-can-eat taco bar and it is one of the best things to have ever happened to SB (not at all exaggerating)! The food was not of the highest quality but also not bad and that is totally justifiable by the cost. We got there shortly after they opened at 4 PM and the place was almost empty and super clean. By 5:15 PM most of the tables were filled up, so they do get a bit busy. Also the taco bar can get a bit dirty but that is normal and they do try and keep it clean. Also their house margarita was great! Not my fave but I enjoyed it. The facilities are beautiful, a large Spanish courtyard with a fountain right in the middle. Def will try to make a habit of stopping by here on Tuesdays! read more

Very disappointing came to Santa Barbara twice to go to this restaurant. Tried calling to make reservations phone number said it was disconnected. Both occasions came here just to find that it's closed for a private party for a wedding should be posted on their website so people don't waste their time and energy trying to come here. But I guess that's not a priority for them just selling out their business and getting their money. Will definitely never come to this place again just simply ridiculous. If you've ever seen the movie trolls the employees look as if they're from Bergen Town. I don't think anyone there likes there job. The children's menu is minimal and they have no plastic cups with lids for kids which left mommy covered in water. The waitress seemed annoyed that we even asked for a child's cup. The high chair looked like it has never been cleaned and I had to wipe it down with several wipes. The restroom was another thing that looked like it hadn't been cleaned. The food is ok but I was disappointed a Mexican restaurant only has black beans. I'm giving 1 star cause the salsa was actually tasty and probably the best thing we were served at the restaurant. The worse dining experience ever. From start to finish not good. We had a group of 14 and everyone reported that the food was below average. I ordered the steak fajitas. And after a couple of bites I was unimpressed. The waitress approached the table and asked me how was everything. I let her know that unfortunately the steak was bland and tasteless. Not good at all. She went to the manager Victor Hernandez who approached us and apologizes, he grabs the plate and takes it to the back. Within seconds he returns and proceeds to tell me that he had tried it and it tasted fine to him. I was mortified !! For starters, I couldn't believe that he would taste it from my plate and then he had no shame to tell me his opinion on it. I responded "Well, I'm the customer paying for it and I disagree." He brings the plate back with a little cup of seasoning salt on the side and walks away. Needless to say, by this time I had already loss my appetite and left the restaurant without consuming the rest of it. My family are natives of Santa Barbara and going forward this experience will be passed on to our friends and family. Oh, I almost forgot the birthday cake was amazing and delicious !!
