This is a place Food Network's Guy Fieri needs to visit. Small, family run place making some delicious and off the hook street tacos, fresh made to order guacamole and a few other authentic Mexican dishes. This is primarily a carry out but there are a few counters you can stand at to eat. We were welcomed with smiles from the staff behind the counter as they went about answering the phone or prepping orders. The tacos were just delicious, each served with fresh ingredients, wedge of lime, and 2 types of spicy sauces on the side. Portions are generous, including the fresh made to order guacamole. Needed to try this place as it is local and I had read good reviews. I decided to go all out once and try all the staples that I would be ordering at once to decide if I'd return or not. The tacos were proper and pretty good, chorizo meat filling could have been a little more greasy for my liking. The burrito was just ok, lopsidedly filled so one half has meat and the other has vegetables and such, it sucked. The enchiladas were awful, simply corn tortillas filled with meat, which was ok, but it was just folded in half and not rolled like it should have been. The biggest mistake was the choice of mole sauce on these enchiladas, WAY too much chocolate flavor, it was like eating a pork candy bar, I didn't even get three bites into this. I might go back if just for the tacos, and maybe they have a cheese offering for the enchiladas that hopefully will be better. But for now this is a no-go. read more

I've tried almost everything on the menu and it's all good. I have a large family and when we order we get one of everything and family dine. Hot sauce and salsa is made fresh daily. This was our second time getting carryout from El Pilar and we love it!! The food is fresh and flavorful. Everything is great but the nachos are by far the best thing on their menu. They're generous with the cheese, piled high with toppings, and the chips are homemade. Our daughter requested platanos for dinner tonight so we decided to order take out. I was so glad that my impression of this place did not change! I'm SoCal born and bred so my expectations of Mexican food is quite high. Don't be deterred by its limited menu and its unexpected curb appeal. This place will not disappoint. My husband placed an order for rice, beans, platanos, and guacamole. Everything was made to order and they prepared the guacamole and fried the chips right in front of him. The guacamole was a good, hefty portion in that one of those small, square take out boxes was stuffed full of it. It was beautifully seasoned and the chips were perfect. My daughter couldn't get enough of the platanos and the rice and beans were great. Let's just say there were no leftovers! My only regret was that I wasn't hungry enough to actually indulge in a burrito or torta. They place is very small so take out was a great option for us. They have a counter eating space but if you have little ones it's best just to order for carry out. I will definitely be returning to fulfill my Mexican food craving whenever I don't feel like driving out to Severna Park's El Poblano (another great place!). read more

I went there this past weekend and was so excited when I saw they had menudo on the menu. I ordered a large menudo and a spicy pork torta. They have a pretty small menu, but its perfect. They serve breakfast all day, offering huevos rancheros. Seriously, their food is amazing and so legit. LOVE THEM. El Pilar is my new favorite restaurant! They have a small dine-in area if you want to eat your food there. I ordered it for carry out. Their service is awesome and they are very kind. I had never eaten menudo before and the cashier asked me if I wanted tortillas or tortilla chips, so I asked which one was better. She and one of the cooks looked at each other and both agreed the tortillas were better so I went with those. When I got home I unwrapped everything and saw that the tortillas were homemade corn tortillas I kind of flipped out. DELICIOUS. Best Mexican food around hands down. Thank goodness north Pasadena finally got a legit, fresh, authentic, cultured Mexican restaurant. I can only speak to carry out service but the friendly, prompt, service is always right on (every single order has been exactly on point). I've tried the burrito, tacos, nachos (a complete meal for two!), sopes, enchiladas and tamales (when they have them). The daily soups are always fantastic. Personally I'm happy to see a smaller menu circulating various items in an effort to keep everything fresh and homemade. Tip: check their Facebook for daily specials. So this place just opened. It used to be a abandoned wing place but yesterday I noticed a open sign on inside. So I decided to stop in and give it a try. I'm very glad I did. The place is carry out only and is very small. I got a Carne asada burrito as well as my wife and it was made super fast. I was born and raised in So. Cal. And have some definite thoughts of what good Mexican food is, especially breakfast. I came to El Pilar looking for the ideal breakfast burrito. The burrito I got was not ideal. Let me explain I like a good steak and egg burrito but that is not a menu option. My other choice is eggs, bacon, sausage, and ham. Also not a menu option. They might make one on request but their sausage is chorizo and I am not a big fan. Having said that I did try a dish with chorizo and theirs is quite good. Now let me address some comments made by others. The store is quite close to the street and has a prominent orange awning making it easy to spot. I've not been here during rush hour so I can't comment about parking other than to say it's never been a problem. As far as customer service is concerned you order your food at a walk up counter, they call you when its ready. I don't know what more you could want. This place is a hole in the wall. If you are looking for a nice sit down dinning experience this is not the place. My biggest complaint is that they do not have fountain drinks. Now it's time to get to the diamond of this place. They have a menu item call sincronizadas el Pilar. This thing is to die for. I have them make mine with bacon and it can't get enough. Breakfast, lunch or dinner sincroniizadas are amazing! read more
