These pupusas and fried plantains are amazing! I don't think I've had any this good since leaving South Florida 4 years ago. I was a little worried about the price, but you are definitely getting your money's worth. I ordered online, and when I got home, I saw I was missing an item. Unfortunately, they were about 30 mins to close, so I didn't have time to go back for the item, but when I called, I was able to come back the next day. Pretty good! I ordered the combination plate (D.) which is two pupusas with rice and beans. Pupusas were amazing! Rice and Beans are just okay. Beans were on the salty side and there was a burnt taste to them. I also ordered a horchata, which was good. Ordered to go and the food is made FRESH so it did take about 15-20 mins before I got the order. Please be aware that it does take sometime. It's very quite and calm inside. This is the kind of place you go when you HAVE TONS OF PATIENCE AND LOTS OF TIME TO WASTE. My son and I came in here for dinner and it took about15 minutes for anyone to even come to our booth to give us a menu. It took another 15 to get our order taken. We wanted chips and salsa and drinks before our meal but they came out with our drinks about 15 minutes later. I get that it is homemade food but 45 min to even get chips and drinks was a little rough, honestly. We had lots to catch up on so we dealt with it but it was cold inside (I kept my down jacket on during the entire meal) and kind of loud in there too with someone in the booth behind us playing music loudly from their phone. There are also kind of odd decorations ...streamers and decorations from the Car movie...kinda felt like I was at a kids bday party. It was on the hour mark that we finally got our food. Anyway, on to the food. It was outstanding. It was delicious and plentiful and my son and I both really enjoyed what we had. It's easy to pass but don't. I tried their pupusas a couple years ago, and wasn't impressed. I couldn't resist the craving anymore, so I reluctantly tried again and DAMN did they improve. We got pupusas revueltas (mixed), Jamaica, and tamarindo. Aguas frescas were a little sweet but flavor was there. The pupusas. My God. I'm glad that there was a pupuseria close to satisfy my cravings! I ordered a loroco pupusa and a spinach one, super fresh, buttery, and yummy. Rice and black beans were in big portions and perfect to take home for later snacks. The horchata was super creamy and fresh tasting as well. All the salsa and sauces were too spicy for me, but I'm a bit of a whimp. Fresh corn tortilla chips really hit the spot! The price was definitely right here! Food is with the wait! And you will wait a long time especially if ordering pupusas they are made fresh each time and it's quite a complicated process. It looks like these guys already have a couple highly rated locations in the Lakewood area. I did not know this. Anyway, it doesn't take a genius know when you are eating good food. Quality and flavor speak for themselves. El Pulgarcito II is a small, whole-in-the-wall establishment off of Lacey Blvd. It looks...okay, honestly, this place looks pretty crappy. I mean, the building itself is old and needs a good remodel and the interior isn't any better. But, I have learned that some of the worst-looking places serve some of the best food. If you don't believe me, go to Carolina's in Phoenix: http://www.yelp.com/biz/carolinas-mexican-food-phoenix When we walked in, there was a large party of about 12 Hispanics/Latinos all sitting at a big table in the middle of the place. Most of the booths were empty, but dirty. We managed to find one that had a few clean spots. I'm not sure how many people work here, because holy crap this place has SLOW service. Fortunately, they had a soccer game on, so I was mildly entertained. I don't really know how long it took, but I bet it was about 15-20 minutes until a girl came around to take our orders. I went with a pupusa combo and a side of platanos. I have had El Salvadoran food before at a place up in Seattle. It's good stuff, which is why I always look for these places. Everything at El Pulgarcito was great, but my one complaint is that I think the rice was a tad overcooked or something. Otherwise, my pupusas were excellent, along with the black beans, slaw, fried plantains, and corn tamale. The waitress forgot to bring us some water, but compensated this by offering us some free horchata which we gratefully accepted. So, yes, El Pulgarcito is pretty darn slow, but everyone there is very nice and can cook up some awesome El Salvadoran food. I highly recommend it. read more

Finding a Salvadoran restaurant is a nice change from regular Mexican food. Our favorite item is the pupusa. In this case, we were pleasantly surprised that they offered five varieties. We got the 3 pupusa combo with the standard cheese and pork, then tried the zucchini and cheese, and spinach and cheese. Combined with the rice and beans, the serving was definitely enough to feed two people. The staff was friendly and they own the grocery store right next store.
