Visited 26 JUL 24 When you are in a town where your spouse previously lived, you can stumble onto a place that she has been to. In fact she wasn't even aware this was a chain. We were in town visiting family. We were in between "events" and had time to have lunch by ourselves. We were both in the mood for something a little different than the other one the road meals we had been having. A bit of Tex-Mex sounded like the right thing as we were driving around and she was showing me old haunts. This is a decent place, it is exactly what you expect in terms of decor, music, aroma. It all well sets the mood for a pleasant border run experience. The furniture is substantial, dark, leather{ette}. Our server Maria, was engaging, effective and paid just enough attention to us on a weekday afternoon that we didn't feel quite neglected. There were a few occupied tables, including some ladies outdoors having mid-day margaritas. I suspect this location does well on the weekends and evenings, there is a good bit of housing around. Where it didn't quite come through for me was the food. It was adequate. My wife said it was what she remembered, solid and consistent. She had a beef burrito combo and I had chicken burrito combo. We both ate the entire serving (it was filling without being too much). My chicken was a bit "soggy" and the flavor was not committed to either Texas or Mexico. If we lived here, would likely come back and try some other things. Maybe have a drink or two- that might bring some additional flavor. I imagine they have mild-i-fied everything for a mid western audience. I suspect ordering in Spanish might get you the good stuff. read more

I think this is one of the worst Mexican restaurants I've been to. I would have rather went to Taco Bell. The experience would have been better and I would have paid less money. For starters, the waiter was not aware of menu items. We were unsure of a menu and asked the waiter to explain it to us. We ordered the item and it was not what the waiter explained to us. The waiter said he really didn't know what the item was and I wish he would have said that when we ordered it. Also, the waiter dropped our to go containers and attempted to give them to us off the floor. We had to tell him that was unacceptable and had to request new containers. This restaurant is close to our home and thought this be a nice night out, I was wrong. Save yourself a headache. Don't go!!! read more

sunday the 14th we dined in as a party of 6 2 children we were sat close to the door, one of the children started throwing up so as we were jumping up grabbing bags and napkins in the same minute one of our kids , aged 3 took off alone passed the hostess that was standing at the door and out the entrance door into the parking lot THANK GOD we noticed immediately and got to her as she was reaching the parking lot. Obviously our children are our responsibility and within that distracted minute that was our fault! Food is consistently great, and we never have complaints. The servers are always friendly as well. Among all the Mexican cuisine chain restaurants in the area, every El Rancho Grande location is consistent. The only issue is the margaritas; they seem to have declined in quality. Chips Chips... Along with Salsa and Queso.. I wasn't in the mood for mexican but this hit the spot pretty well! I had a couple chicken tacos with rice and beans.. The beans were anything special, but the rice and tacos were good. The chicken in the taco was well flavored and cooked well. They kept our chips and salsa filled and allowed me to eat too much. Many of you know my recently developed aversion to Mexican food, partially because of eating it like 3 times per week when I lived in Pilsen, and partially because so many (non-authentic) Mexican restaurants throw fake cheese, ground beef, and a hint of iceberg lettuce on a taco shell and say "voila"! El Rancho Grande was somewhere in the middle of the dichotomy between authentic and fake Mexican food, but whatever it was, it was still tasty. I had 2 chicken tacos and an enchillada, and was satisfied with it.. My boyfriend had a vegetarian burrito that he enjoyed.. While they offered a part of the menu to vegetarian items, there wasn't a whole lot of choice. (He didn't care, because he wanted the burrito regardless, but I've been attempting to reduce my meat consumption, and there was just nothing really appealing on the list. Give me some avocado-topped choices, please!) Important note: you must go between 3-6pm Monday-Thursday to take advantage of their happy hour! 1/2 price off all drinks? Si, gracias! If you're a seasoned Mexican food veteran who is comfortable ordering carryout orders without a menu, be really careful with El Rancho Grande. The restaurant's offerings aren't categorized in usual ways. When I tried to order a burrito suizo, I was given a chorizo burrito. Easy mistake. Other complaints include a bland queso dip and no greens or rice unless you order them. Basically, if you ask for a burrito, you get a burrito and nothing else. The restaurant was very kind, allowing a phone order just 10 minutes before closing. If you choose to eat at the restaurant, it has plenty of seating. read more

I'm not a huge Mexican food fan but this place was great. I had the Moctezuma Molcajete and it was fantastic. If you are not familiar with dish, El Rancho's version features chicken, steak, chorizo and shrimp with cheese and spicy green sauce served bubbling in a stone molcajete. The dish was incredible as was the service. I highly recommend El Rancho Grande and hope to return next time I'm in Dayton. read more

I always come to this location. Good food. We always get fajitas for 2 because they do allow the $7 off coupon to be used when getting the double fajitas. The main reason I choose El Rancho is because of the coupon. The only issue is when you check out there is no code for the coupon so the waitress never knows what to do with the coupon which sucks because check out takes forever read more

The food seems to have changed over the years. I went there often a few years ago and I always thought it was tops. This time around the cheese/onion enchiladas seemed more like cheese and onion ravioli to me and the salsa topping tasted to me more like a piquant tomato sauce than anything else. If I could give a negative rating I would. We had my grandparents 55th wedding anniversary here and the service and management was some of the worst I have ever experienced. It took an hour and a half for my appetizers. That came out frozen and cold. The manager Victor was sitting down on his phone and was asked to come to the table 3 times and still did not come. The server was almost in tears that everything was so messed up and I know it's not all on her. I went to pay and Victor who was still sitting down on his phone got up and did not even say anything to me. When I asked him about it he could only say it's Sunday no one wants to work on Sunday so it's the normal.... really not even sorry for this experience. And so excuse about how he needed to be on break he had been here since open, but in the 2 hours we were there he was sitting down the whole time. Victor also stated that he did everything he could with a 15% discount because I did not want a gift card to come back as I live over 3 hours away. He said 15% is what he could do and still did not apologize for a damn thing. This is the worst experience and I will not be come back here and plan to call the GM because even on a Sunday the party of 50 of us did get any type of service or even care we were dinning here. read more

We have always enjoyed eating here. Their chori cheese with the tortilla chips are the best. However, we had a bad experience last Saturday evening. We won 2- $10.00 gift certificates while attending a local charitable event. When I presented the certificates to the cashier I was told we could only use one as this was considered the same as a coupon. Not wanting to argue with her I paid my bill and left. After thought.....I would have had them present us with 2 checks and used both certificates. Will consider going there again, but will not use gift certificates. read more

i like to try new Mexican places and this is one of the ones that wasn't the greatest experience. the service was OK, i always had a refill and chips and salsa available. i would say the chips and salsa were an OK 6 on a 10 point scale and the salsa is more tomatoey than i like. the food was not my favorite Mexican, the chicken was a little tough instead of being tender and juicy. the flavor to me was more on the bland side, except for the rice. it was pretty point on. it wasn't cheap either, more pricey than most places and not worth what it was. on my second trip here i had the queso dip which was pretty bland too and the food was still a meh and i was ready to leave. don't think i will need to hit this joint up on the rest of the trip or when i come back in town read more
