We really enjoy Sonora Grill Seafood Steak Bar & Grill, and Vallarta Mexican Seafood merits special attention as well. On our radar: La Poblanita Mexican Market and restaurant. A note on stars; Sonora Grille is on Burkhardt, and in a small strip mall; I am not inclined to award a strip mall restaurant 5 stars; however.... Tucked back in a strip mall is this hidden GEM!! Strip mall and seafood usually would not go together for me, but their food is SO GOOD!! Fresh, flavorful, not tour typical Mexican restaurant. They make their rocks margaritas by hand and customize how you'd like. Great service with a unique and fun atmosphere/decor. read more

I visited the newly opened Vallarta Mexican & Seafood tonight. The restaurant used to be an ElToro, which has now moved across the street. The restaurant is scaled back in size but had a cozy, inviting sea theme. The dome ceiling in the center was lighted to look like rippled water, which was a nice touch. The bar takes up the back of the space, and the side and center of the restaurant are the table seating. We were greeted by our waitress and given an interesting complimentary appetizer, instead of the traditional chips and salsa, which was round flat tostada shells and a cevichice dip. The menu was extensive and included many seafood and authentic Mexican dishes. I ordered the trio taco salad with shrimp, chicken, and beef. It was nicely seasoned and balanced. The ingredients were fresh, and the meal was hot. The waitress was attentive and came back several times to make sure I had what I needed. Overall, I would say the taco salad was a little over priced, compared to other similar meals I have gotten elsewhere. I definitely will be coming back to try some of their authentic Mexican dishes. The Pina Del Mar ( seafood stuffed pineapple) looked interesting and yummy. They also have some weekly specials, including a taco Tuesday, and I will be back to try. I went for lunch with two friends on Saturday. We all ordered the same dish, the parrilada. We each chose a different meat, one chicken, one shrimp and I had steak. We were all happy with what we chose. Although, I was jealous when I saw the size of the shrimp. But my reason for the review was that they went beyond what I expected. I didn't want sour cream, guacamole or beans. When they brought our food, they gave me extra pico and an extra bowl of rice to make up for what I didn't want. I thought about it, but did not ask for it nor expect it. They just anticipated it. They were wonderful. read more

The menu does not offer any gluten free items except a few Salads according to the waitress. Further, she told us that all sauces contain flour as well. Although in looking up some dishes and sauces on their menu they traditionally do not contain gluten (flour). So either the waitress doesn't know and wanted to not be bothered to check or they truly make everything with flour and use only flour tortillas as well. Very disappointing considering many are simple seafood dishes, that could easily skip flour. read more

We went to Vallarta for the first time yesterday. They have updated the restaurant with an ocean theme. Drinks were good . My gin and tonic was served in pretty barware. The chips came with a seafood salsa that was tasty, although you would need to like cilantro. There was also a traditional salsa.. my husband and I shared the whole red snapper. It was served with a slightly spicy red sauce that contained multiple large shrimp. It was accompanied by rice, French fries, and a small salad. The only thing I would change is to plate the french fries and salad separately as they became saturated with the red sauce. The service was quick and our waitress was knowledgeable in the restaurant specialties. Overall a great dining experience and we will be returning again. read more

I couldn't find anything wrong with this place! The flavors were terrific and the portions huge...usually it's one or the other, but seldom both. We ordered two appetizers for four people shrimp ceviche and some sort of fish strips.. Bothe were delicious and ample. The four of us split a sea food dish in a pineapple half and it was so good. Not your average Mexican food! This place is a gem!! When you get seated you get ceviche, corn tortilla and crackers. We had 9 people at our table and everyone loved their food. The pasta dishes were amazing! Yes PASTA . My friend got the tilapia platter and I tried it and it was amazing! They had lots of seafood selection including crab legs, octopus and whole snapper! I can't wait to go back and try other dishes. I had a hard time choosing! Definitely give this place a try! The service was amazing and so friendly! Restaurant is very clean and tidy. My wife and I ate at Vallarta last night for the 1st time. It was outstanding. The food was delicious, the service terrific, and the ambiance was great. My wife and I eat out often, and I would say that the meal we had last night is one of the best we have had in the Dayton area. We had the Pina Del Mar and the Coco Loco. The atmosphere was awesome. I loved the barrel ceiling and charming wait staff. We were surprised by the chips served with both salsa and ceviche which was delicious. We ordered the Coco Loco which was 5 stars, so rich in flavor and plenty of shrimp, bay scallops, crab meat and more. Great taste and perfect for those with the need for a more mild palate. We also ordered the Molcajete Del Mar. This is served boiling hot with heads on shrimp, mussels and 2 crab legs. This is the only reason I dropped the rating down to a 4 vs a 5. The picture on the menu showed at least 4 crab legs and although the dish was very tasty once it was cooled down enough to eat, for the price paid it should have had at least four or more crab legs. We saw a young girl served the same thing with 2 sections of crab legs with 4 legs each. We felt a little jipped. Maybe her parents paid for extra legs. Otherwise a nice dish with a nice amount of spice (with some after burn). Definitely will go back and try more. We took advantage of the Friday special of the tower of Margaritas. Vallarta was a refreshing dinner choice. The service was amazing. Our server went above and beyond and was kind. She suggested a slushy margarita so for my drink, I had a tasty mango margarita. As my appetizer, I had The Guacamole dip which was made to perfection, so creamy and rich! Finally, I ordered the Aguachile and it was very flavorful and had a nice spicy kick. As far as the ambiance, I danced in my seat during most of my visit, I was transported to a Mexican fiesta with their fun song selection. That and the under the sea decor makes you wish you could be in Puerto Vallarta drinking that mango margarita! read more

Wife and I decided to try Vallarta because we heard that it was co-owned by the family that runs El Toro. Place was much brighter and more inviting than the previous set-up and the decorations and lighting focus on an ocean theme. Ceiling lighting is cool because it gives the shimmering effect like you are under water. They have a lot of seafood dishes as well as some traditional Mexican non-seafood dishes. Food was excellent, wife had salmon and fettuccine, I had scallops, shrimp, and muscles with fettuccine. Keep in mind that some of the seafood is non American standard with octopus and prawns. Plenty to eat if you don't like either. Service was excellent although not very crowded yet as we ate before dinner rush. read more

Vallarta is really a great addition to the Mexican restaurants in the area. They concentrate on seafood dishes from the coastal areas of Mexico but there are plenty of options for anyone who doesn't like seafood. We were a party of six and everyone ordered something different . My son ordered a chiorzo queso appetizer to share with the table and everyone there (and they know queso) said this was the best they ever had. He ordered the Berrio Tacos and loved them. I had fish tacos for a main which had several tasty ingredients to go with the fish (pictured). The fish was heavily breaded; I would prefer less breading but it was good. Service was excellent and the atmosphere was pretty cool with a ceiling in the bar area that looked like a tropical sea. The only downer was there were few diners on the night we went--hopefully it was because it was the day after Thanksgiving and not typical. This place deserves a full house. read more
