The Acapulco is ok. The taco filling was really tasty (mine is better but hey, I have my own fan club with a grand total of 4 including the hubs, dog, cat and myself, of course). I really wish Tulsa would stop using chili that tastes like it came straight out of a Texas Pete hot dog chili can. (Don't get me started on Ron's Hamburgers' nasty chili). The enchilada was good and sloppy - nothing uniform about that puppy! The refried beans were good and had an extra seasoning to them that I can't put my finger on but I liked it. The rice? meh chips/salsa was ordinary. I make my own chips and again, the Fan of Me uses sea salt which tastes better to me than ordinary table salt. My wife and I have been going to Rancho Grande for many years and we always felt it was one of the best Mexican spots in town. But because we live quite a bit away from Tulsa it has been about a year or so since we have been there. Yesterday I took my wife there and was surprised at how much they changed the place. They added a cantina upstairs, remodeled the lower floor and expanded considerably. What used to be a nice little spot is no more. Totally different setting and atmosphere. We thought that being around 4:30 there would be some specials... which there were .. but we were informed you could only take advantage of them if you went upstairs to the cantina which as far as we could tell was only accessible by some steep stairs.. which my wife is unable to use. So no specials were offered to us in the downstairs dining area. When i looked at the menu I couldn't believe how much higher the prices were and how few options or combination dinners were on it... the menu was night and day from before. $8 for a margarita is pretty high! Then the food came and that was enough for us... pretty lousy and not real appetizing. The waiter did try to make my wife happy and offered her a different plate..and the service was friendly.. but on receiving a lunch bill for 2 of $50 was too much to appreciate. WISH YELP ALLOWED FOR ZERO STARS!!! I planned my husband's 50th birthday celebration weeks ago for Saturday, August 31 at El Rancho Grande, because it holds great memories for us. After settling the details of the party with an assistant manager, I sent out invites and was excited to be celebrating such a special event in our home town. Fast forward a few weeks, I only received the outgoing message stating hours of operation every time I tried to confirm my reservation with the restaurant. We made the trip from Texas for the party and determined we should drop by to speak to a human rather than try calling again. Much to my utter shock, a sign was posted on the door saying that they were CLOSED for Labor Day weekend!! After discovering a car parked in the back, we figured that an employee must be working and we were correct. We were greeted by a lady who informed us they were closed, but quickly realized that she was dealing with a disgruntled customer. Ultimately, it was determined that there was NO record of my reservation, but that there was another party booked for the SAME date and time. Once again, I was shocked to learn that due to no response from that customer regarding a confirmation email, management made the choice to close the whole weekend anyway. So not only was my party ruined, it is possible that another party was ruined as well. The lack of communication and attention to detail is absolutely non-existent and I HIGHLY recommend to anyone considering El Rancho Grande for a nostalgic get together should save themselves a lot of frustration and disappointment by going somewhere else!!!!! read more

THIS place is DELICIOUS! And it's funny that not many seem to know about it. They have an "all you can eat", weekdays at noon, consisting of beef and chicken tacos, "sides", and enchiladas to KILL for - unlike the rip-off "flour tortilla and lettuce" joints so easily found in this city. Their enchiladas are topped with a thick, righteous, traditional chili - not the thin, red ketchup OTHER places call "Chili SAUCE". The waiters and waitresses don't write down anything when you order and then forget to bring whatever you need to the table. It was frustrating and we finally decided to quit going. I have lived in Tulsa my entire life and tonight was my first visit to this legendary Tulsa tex-mex restaurant. I regret doing so. As I sit here I can't help being mystified by all the good reviews of this place. It is a favorite among many locals, and I am wondering why. Upon arriving my buddy and myself were promptly seated and our waiter Jesus came to the table and took our drink orders. My friend ordered a tea and I ordered a Dos Equis Amber. Jesus brought us chips and salsa and our drinks arrived immediately after. The salsa was really flavorful with a nice amount of heat. I mentioned to my friend that some if not most Tex-mex restaurants have a hotter salsa if you ask for it and I usually like to try it out. At this point I excuse myself to use the restroom and while in the facilities my friend asks Jesus if they have a hotter salsa and Jesus informs him that they do not. So my friend asks for a second bowl of the salsa so we can both have one to dip from. Keep in mind we asked for the hotter salsa because we just wanted to try it if they had it, not because the house salsa wasn't to our liking. Jesus then brings out a second bowl of salsa and my buddy starts to dip from that one and I start to dip from the first bowl. My buddy tells me that his is really hot so I take a big scoop from his bowl and I can immediately tell that it tastes quite different. Someone had taken some type of really hot sauce and spiked the salsa with it. This resulted in making the salsa inedible because the unbearable heat. When Jesus arrives back at the table with our food my friend informs him that the salsa is too hot and could he bring us another of the original salsa. When Jesus arrives back at the table he sets down the third bowl of salsa and it clearly is a different color and texture than the other two salsas. With raised eyebrows I decided to try this third version of salsa and it basically was tomato sauce from a can poured into a bowl. So in short the salsa was really good, then too hot, then canned tomato sauce in a bowl. Moving on to our entrees, my buddy ordered the Acapulco combo which is a beef taco and a cheese and onion enchilada covered in chili con carne with rice and refried beans. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with sour cream sauce. I ordered rice and charro beans which are my preference when I dine at this type of place. My friend's plate looked good and he ate it all except for the rice and beans. My plate looked good as well but it unfortunately didn't taste good at all. The enchiladas had really dry and bland chicken and were covered with sour cream sauce which looks like queso but tastes like spoiled sour cream. My charro beans were some of the worst I have tried and the Mexican rice was an absolute abomination. The rice was dry and had a weird smoky flavor unlike any Mexican rice I have ever tried. My friend described it as a weird chinese food flavor. After suffering through this meal, it was time for Jesus to bring our checks. Upon reviewing my ticket I noticed I had been charged $2.00 for an iced tea that I didn't order. Maybe an honest mistake but after the salsa fiasco I can't help but to be left wondering. BUYER BEWARE!!! My family came to ERG yesterday for my grandma's birthday. We have been coming here for years and have a special place on our hearts for this restaurant because my great grandma used to take my grandma here when she was a kid. Everything was great as far as service goes, but when we got our bill we found out that A PITCHER OF HOUSE MARGARITAS IS $35. I've been to Mexican restaurants all over Tulsa and I've never paid more than $16-$24 for a pitcher. We were given glasses with no ice and we were able to fill 4 glasses with the pitcher before it was empty. The house margaritas are $8 each. $8x4=$32. Why would we pay more for a pitcher instead of buying individual glasses!? When you buy a pitcher, you're supposed to be getting a discount, otherwise it doesn't make sense to buy one. We ended up getting 4 of them with our party of 8. So, we ended up paying $140 for margaritas when if we would have ordered individual margaritas we would have paid $128. We expressed our concern to our waiter so he got the manager involved. She came over to tell us that they just redid their menus a couple of weeks ago and that the prices went up because they got a new tequila, Sauza Blue. Still a basic tequila, nothing special. The pitcher prices are not posted anywhere on the menu or on the little signs on the table. She also argued with me about how she wasn't sure how much ice was in the pitcher and that a pitcher will get you more than 4 glasses. THE VOLUME OF THE PITCHER DOESN'T CHANGE BASED OFF OF HOW MUCH ICE VS LIQUID IS IN IT. IF THERE'S ONLY LIQUID, IT'S STILL 48 OZ BECAUSE IT'S A 48 OZ CONTAINER. It was an ignorant argument and we were done with the conversation. We just paid and got out of there. On my ticket, I paid for a burrito (which doesn't come with rice or beans with it) and a pitcher of margaritas and my tab was over $56. After tip I paid $68. That's crazy to me. Anyway, I won't be back to overpay for mediocre food and margaritas. I want to reiterate, though, that our server was outstanding! read more

A Tulsa tradition in Mexican...not completely authentic Mexican but I don't necessarily want true authentic every Mexican meal...sometimes I need a little on the Tex Mex side and this is my go-to spot for it! If you love enchiladas you won't be disappointed! The fresh every time salsa comes with some heat, and the chips are unique, never stale, and the corny flavor pairs well with salsa, quad, and queso. Been eating here for 20 years and last night, Sep 26th, was my first time back since April and everything changed for the worse. New menu that either doesn't reflect what they bring you or the kitchen just makes whatever. Ordered tostadas which came with a side of guacamole and sour cream per the menu, got three different tostadas one with beans, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream, one with guacamole, lettuce, and tomato, and one with just queso. Our waiter was short on explanations insisting that's the way it comes. They've slashed the number of combo dinners in half while charging a ridiculous $5.99 per extra item. Gone is the pick three, say hello to ordering something close and paying through the nose for what you used to get. The worst was they've added a very confusing receipt format and started tacking on an 18% gratuity for parties 4 and larger. Yes, you heard me 4 and larger. A "party" of my wife and I, our 2yo daughter and her maternal grandparents, or 5 total if you count a 2yo as an adult, triggered an 18% gratuity. The check made it worse listing tax and gratuity separately without a subtotal only a grand total. Under new management? Trying to pay for unneeded renovations? I wouldn't be surprised if they closed soon with these shenanigans. I will not be back unless I hear things have changed. read more

I've driven by this Mexican restaurant many times over the last 20+ years that I've lived in Tulsa. I had read about how it had been in business since the 1950s and the food was great. So last week my husband & I decided to try it out. It was on a weeknight, got there about 7:30 so we missed any crowds. Love the interior, lovely and tasteful. Our waiter (unfortunately I didn't get his name), was very professional and efficient. We placed our order and the food was delivered in a timely manner, giving us time to enjoy the spicy salsa and crisp tortilla chips. My husband ordered the Chicken Fajita salad. He was very pleased and said the chicken was delicious and everything tasted fresh. I ordered the cheese enchiladas with beans and rice. It was all mouthwatering! Delicious cheese (no cheese soup junk that I hate), refried beans were seasoned perfectly and mashed some but leaving some beans whole just like I like it. The seasoned rice was very good. Upon recommendation of our waiter we ordered sophillas. Sprinkled lightly with sugar and cinnamon, those light warm pastries were wonderful with a drizzle of honey, they were a great ending to a delicious meal! We will definitely be back to try some of the other dishes on the menu. read more

Honestly my husband insisted i make this online review because it could help anybody whos hesitant about visiting a mexican restaurant. Our food was incredible here it was truly another realm of delicious. Our server John (said he was new at the end of our meal yet honestly i would have believed he helped open the restaurant 50 years ago with his knowledge and super specific also satisfying recommendations) was so catering to our needs and even walked us to the exit and held the door open as we left despite it being a Saturday night and im sure he was weeded, as the pro servers put it. I told John he's incredible at what he does and believe in my heart he could sell snow to an eskimo. I was in awe at how well he was able to not just ask us what we wanted but he asked us what we like and gave us recommendations based on that and incorporated his own personal twist on the menu . We had came in with the intention of trying just the chile relleno platter because that is our goto but John (BLESS HIS INCREDIBLE HEART) recommended their world famous Nighthawk and informed us we could for just 5-6$ more add our favorite mexican dish on the side. He also recommended we try the sour cream sauce on top of our peppers and WOW was he right. The sour cream sauce at this restaurant has the potential to create world peace and I was even fortunate enough to get to take some of that liquid gold home .The salsa was fantastic and right on the spectrum line of too hot but we made it through no problems and were able to take some of it home and enjoyed as a late night snack.
