Although cheese was lathered all over my tamales. Which I've never had it that way. I could tell it was mexican cheese however, which was a plus. El Real has been open less than two months. Though I've been there three times, I have only eaten there twice. The first visit was on their soft opening day. We walked in and it was packed. A family was leaving and told us to turn around and leave. The restaurant had run out of food and they had spent three hours just trying to get any meal from the restaurant. Trying to be a fair judge, we walked to the hostess. She confirmed that the restaurant did run out of some key meats and ingredients, but still had the ability to make some dishes. We asked what they were and how long the wait would be. She said there was one meat option left and it would take about 45 minutes to get our meal. I appreciated her honesty but we left immediately for another restaurant. We returned a few days later (still during their soft opening) and had a 15 minute wait. I think because of the weather and our proximity to the patio door, we shared our indoor table with a lot of flies. Per the recommendation of our waitress, I ordered the Molcajete with beef and my boyfriend got the fajitas. The Molcajete is a head-turner with its bubbling stone pot. The rice, beans and chorizo came in small cups on the same plate which was so small that the cups slid under the stone pot. I burned myself multiple times trying to pull the cups out. You eat the Molcajete like fajitas. The beef was cut into large strips and were very chewy. It made me have to do the ugly bite-down-and-pull-and-tear move in order to eat it. We were brought six tortillas for us to share. We were never offered more tortillas and when I asked for some to go with my leftovers, we were charged a dollar for three small tortillas. Had I known that, I would have walked over to Publix and bought triple the amount for the same money since the tortillas weren't better than any store brand. The third visit was after the official opening. We went with two other couples. We were recommended a Spanish Margarita. Apparently, this is a margarita with wine poured on the top. I didn't care for it. Per the recommendation of our waitress, we ordered the Queso Real for an appetizer. This was literally a block of cheese on sauce, topped with different items. The taste wasn't bad. What is bad is the fact that you're eating a block of cheese. With the appetizer we were given three tortillas and no plates. Eventually we got a couple of plates, but with a party of six, that doesn't really help. I ordered the Tacos de Arrachera. They provide a substantial portion of beef in the tacos, but like the Molcajete they were chopped so big and were so chewy that I had to employ the pull-and-tear move again. Not good. For dessert, we shared the churros. The churros were nice and warm and came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Unfortunately, that's all they came out with. No spoon or anything. So I had to reuse the last churro to scoop up the remaining ice cream. Compared with the surrounding area, the restaurant is decent and the location is prime (easy access, easy parking), but it's pricey for the quality of food you get. read more

Pleased to see a minimal amount of the paraphernalia, road signs and the tacky wall art (sic) that typically is found in this type of establishment. Menu was overwhelming and too many choices left much room for disappointment. Of course, what my dining partner ordered was great, the beef in the steak quesadilla was perfectly cooked, mine not so much. A molcate pot should be a little more generous with more than the 2 shrimp and few pieces of chicken; which left me hungry as well. The margarita was however plenty big and delicious. read more

I'm not sure what restaurant the other reviewers went to, but after two visits, this is the best Mexican food I've ever had. And I've had more than enough in five decades. Other Mexican restaurants tend to serve homogenized, lumpy bean mush flavored only by jalapenos. But, El Real is something different. The menu (http://www.elrealmexgrill.com/PageLayout/menu/ElReal_Menu.pdf) is filled with dishes from Mexico; not the bastardized American platters. The food is fresh and flavorful. Order guacamole, and it is made fresh to order at your table. The Queso Real is a cheesy, gooey mess of yumminess; a thin slab of Panela cheese topped with rajas, mushrooms and the best chorizo I've tasted. My wife Allyson and I had the Santos Parrillada for two on our first visit. Imagine fajitas, but better. Steak, shrimp, panela cheese strips, chicken and chorizo, onions, bell peppers and tomatos in an adobo sauce and served with tortillas. Molcajetes on our second visit: Steak chicken, shrimp, panela cheese, green onions and cactus leaves in a delicious tomatillo sauce, with chorizo and tortillas on the side. Our service on both visits was very good. The bartender even came over to make sure we were pleased with our margaritas. Which were, by the way, delicious. Two visits in the course of a week's time may not be a very big sample size, but it was enough to secure El Real as one of my favorites. I would highly recommend it. read more

Consistently excellent. We've been dining here about twice a month since May 2013 (6 months now). Service is most important to us. Even if the food is delicious, poor service would prevent us from returning to a restaurant. That is not the case at El Real. Service is always excellent - even on busy Friday and Saturday nights. It is obvious everyone, including management, is involved and works together to make sure you have a great dining experience. Food is fantastic for Americanized Mexican. We do not order the regular tacos, fajitas, nacho dishes and chimichangas like many people. We try a different item from their specialty section each time and have been pleased with every dish. read more

We've been to this restaurant about a half dozen times. Our first couple of visits were good enough to warrant us returning. They had absolutely delicious calamari, that we ordered every time. The last two trips......it's like it was a different restaurant. The menu has been redone and to our disappointment, they no longer offer the calamari. The guacamole has changed from very tasty to stale and bland. The entrées have become quite ordinary, as well. But what made me drop to a two star rating, was the HORRIBLE service. There were four or five servers, sitting a table right next to us, laughing and joking while verrrry slowly folding napkins. The cleaning lady noticed our empty water glasses and refilled them for us, while our server sat, watched the football game and occasionally folded a napkin.......in between bursts of laughter. Mexican food is not my first choice when looking for a place to dine out. My wife and I went out to watch a movie and on the way home she decided she wasn't in the mood to make dinner as it was late. We saw El Real Mexican Grill on the side of the road and decided to give it a shot. The atmosphere was very nice, well decorated and clean. Everything about the dining room was comforting and pleasant. The menu had some excellent choices with beautiful pictures of the food. It was not an overwhelming menu either. I tried something I can't pronounce but the pictures on the menu made it look good, and the description was very detailed, so although I couldn't pronounce the name, I knew what I was getting, unlike most Mexican restaurants I have been to in the past. The food took about 25 minutes to get to the table, which it said was the case on the menu, all of their food is prepared fresh so it takes a little longer to prepare instead of coming out of a frozen bag and into a microwave. It was worth the wait! The food looked exactly like the picture on the menu and the flavors were outstanding! I have a new favorite Mexican grill only 5 minutes from the house! I highly recommend this facility to anyone looking for amazing Mexican cuisine! read more

This is our go to Mexican restaurant. They have both text max and authentic options. In particular we like several of the soups. There is a great lunch special Monday through Friday during lunch that we recommend. The prices are reasonable and they also have drink specials often. They even have options for delivery through choices to you. The service is quick, and seating is generally comfortable. The place can be fairly noisy, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights. read more

I'm not from Winder/Bethlehem but met my girlfriend at El Real for dinner. We had tried a different Mexican restaurant in Winder that was TERRIBLE. With that experience in mind I was kind of skeptical about El Real. When I got there the place was clean and had a nice atmosphere and decor. Service was prompt and good. A few small errors that were promptly corrected. Nothing big enough to deduct a star for it. I generally play it safe on my first visit to any Mexican restaurant and use the chips, salsa and tacos as a barometer. The chips and salsa were good. The salsa was very fresh with just the right amount for fresh cilantro and onion. The chips were crispy and didn't taste like the just came out of a bag. I got 3 different tacos, a grilled steak (carne asada), arrachera (steak in adobo) and just a regular crispy/hard corn shell beef taco. In the order that I ate them I started with the basic taco. This literally might be the best taco I've ever had. The shell was light and crispy and had a larger than normal curve at the bottom. This allowed the taco to be stuffed with fillings including a LOT of very well seasoned ground beef, lettuce and cheese and I added salsa. DELICIOUS!!! The next one was the arrachera. It was served with a side of spicy salsa. I have a pretty good tolerance for spicy so I just dumped a good helping on one side and thinned it out towards the other end. I guess the adobo had some spice and combined with the salsa I got a blast of heat, in a good way. I couldn't eat the entire taco that way so I'm glad I thinned it out but again excellent flavor. The last one was the grilled steak (is the name on the menu but it's carne asada). Again, very good. I've always had this served with tomatillo sauce and lime. They do not serve it with it so you have to request it. I asked for tomatillo salsa and forgot to ask for the lime. This is the ONLY thing I was disappointed in. They need to tweak their recipe on this. It is a very flat tasting salsa. It almost seems like it is just tomatillos and some salt. It needs some acid (lime juice), onions and perhaps some green chilies or diced fresh jalapenos. It also definitely needs some fresh cilantro. It almost tasted canned which is actually fine if you add some fresh ingredients to it to brighten it up and give it some depth in flavor. All in all El Real was excellent and I will definitely return (probably several times). I'm glad my girlfriend picked this place over Applebee's as my apprehension of good Mexican food in the Winder area has been alleviated. This place might just be my new favorite Mexican restaurant. I want to go back to try the fresh tableside guacamole next time. That is my next step in my process of deciding just how good a Mexican restaurant is but El Real has already won me over. Now I just want to try different menu items. Well done El Real. And I really like the hand blown glass lighting. See you next time. read more

I'm really not sure what other reviewers here were expecting, but the place is obviously not trying to be a five star restaurant. What it is trying to do is just serve cheap, good Mexican food, and it does a great job at that. Food: It's your standard Mexican food- fajitas, enchiladas, tacos, etc. The taste was pretty good. The margaritas were a bit on the weak side, though. Cost: Most dishes are $10 and under. I consider that more than fair for a place like this. Service: Excellent. The servers were attentive and friendly. I would definitely return. If you're looking for a five star restaurant, as it seems some of these other reviewers were, you may want to look else where. read more

Chips are good. Waiter was awesome. The food was ok I had grilled chicken which was great. My kids on the other hand had shredded chicken it was seasoned good but they stuffed too much in the quesadillas. Rice was also good.
