I was in the area 'adulting' on my day off and was taking a leisurely walk between errands. I came across this food truck and decided to give it a try with a little quick bite of empanadas. Why not? For the right price, I tried 2 - one chicken and one cheese. They were big, plump, well filled. The chicken was savory and well spiced. A little more deeply fried and greasy than I would have liked, but I am sure other people are here for that. I saw a Yelp review for this place near my job talking about fantastic Mexican food from a food truck for $7 so I had to check it out. I guess I should have looked at the date cause it was now $11. I got the beef plater, it had lots of rice, a bit mushy, lite on the beans, some chopped lettuces and tomatoes, and the beef was cut into small cubes, which made it a bit chewy, I topped it off with some sour cream. It was ok but not great, I keep eating it until the meat and lettuce were all gone and all I had left from some rice. I will not be dreaming of coming back, that is for sure. read more

I'm a sucker for finding good street food carts. It's like knowing a small New York City secret. One of my coworkers was kind enough to let me in on this secret, and we planned a Friday lunch trip out there. The place was as indiscriminate as you'll find (or not), cast under the shadows of 60th street scaffolding. The only tell was the line of Spanish speaking workers lined up. I paid $9 for an order of steak flautas. They take a while to make because they have to fry the tortillas, so be prepared to wait about 10 minutes. The order comes with 3 flautas, covered in lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, and salsa, along with a side of rice and beans. After a 15 minute subway ride back to work, I got a chance to try them out. I must say, this place managed to live up to their name. The flautas were crispy, and the steak was well cooked. The toppings provided a nice balance to the savoriness of the flauta itself. My only issue was my side of black beans didn't actually have any beans, and was like the mush you find at the bottom of a can. My friend's order had actual black beans so maybe I was unlucky there. read more

I got a spicy pork taco for $2.50 from here today just to try the place out. The pork, while tasty, was a bit on the tough side. The cuts of meat are obviously not that great, but if it had been cooked better, it may not have been rubbery like it was today. The guacamole that they used was flavorless, too. One of my favorite places for lunch. Make sure you get here towards the earlier end of lunch as they will run out of things if you do go at 3PM or later (as I do...but I like later lunches as it makes the day go by faster). I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE their tortas. I normally get the chicken torta with everything on it. So good...a bit messy but so good. The tacos aren't bad either, but for $2.50, i'm not complaining. Pico de Gallo is always fresh and they LOVE cilantro here. Do be weary of the red / green sauce. It is HOT. And if they still have when you get there, get the chicken or pork pastelillo. While they are fried and will make the brown paper bag see through, for a $1.50 you cannot go wrong with the explosion of taste that will occur in your mouth. Just make sure that explosion isn't hot oil...cause that would be just painful. All in all, don't be afraid because this is mexican food from a cart. I love this cart! Any time there is a line of construction workers, cabbies and suits you know you've stumbled on quality. The quality is good, ingredients fresh, and price is right. The tamale's are great as are the taco's. The burrito is huge but not as exciting or cheap as the other items. The hot sauce is muy muy caliente! so be careful. The only negative is the wait. I've just returned from a trip to San Antonio / Austin and am not yet ready to come down from my taco binging high. El Rey del Sabor taco truck was the first thing that sprang to mind. I have frequented this location for a few years now and it has always been a go to taco truck. They can make things pretttttty spicy if you ask them to. Some things I order here: The Carne Asada taco, the Al Pastor, the Enchiladas (I just tell the guy to pick three kinds of meat, as they are usually out of something). The tacos are served with tons of white onion and cilantro on top, just the way I like it. They can be messy and fall apart, so be sure to ask for napkins!!! The enchiladas come with a nice white cheese on top and a small side of pinto beans and rice. I found the rice and beans to be pretty flavorless for a place that claims to be the king of flavor, but I will take naked beans over too salty or oily any day so just understand that's how they make 'em. Regulars know to ask what is sold out for the day, since they only have a limited amount of each kind of meat. The lingua was all out as well as the beef today, insert sadness. It is a taco truck after all so they dont have a huge kitchen, it happens. Also Im a bit dismayed that they keep raising the prices, while the meat quality remains the same! Food: 3 stars Experience: 4 stars Took a hop and a skip to 43rd & Broadway, across from my office. The line was 5 people deep at 1:30pm, with Obama supposedly making a visit later in the afternoon to Town Hall. The crush of people was not too bad. I ordered the Al Pastor Torta ($6.50) with everything - still not certain what "everything" is but there was a boatload of meat slathered in sauce, melty cheese, pineapple chunks, guacamole, jalapeno, tomato slices, red onion -- all in a roll. Upon eating, I literally stared for a good while, wondering how to tackle a monstrosity this big. The flavors weren't profound, everything was rather muted and nothing stood out - except for the fatty bits I had to spit out. The whole thing was supremely messy, and hard for a girl like myself to finish off in one sitting, but felt I had to or else the bread would be too disgusting. Overall, the food was a 3, but the service was neat and efficient, patient to help a newcomer. I must try the huaraches, tacos, and empanadas next; and hope they will provide a greater culinary experience. Overall location is great for me, people's friendly, food's good and priced well. Well, I love street carts as much as anyone else, but I was a little disappointed here. Disclaimer: I did NOT order the tacos, I ordered the spicy pork torta. It took awhile longer than I thought it would, but it was $6 for a ginormous sandwich. It was jam-packed of with fresh veggies: lettuce, tomato, onions, guac. It also had canned jalepenos that had a bit of heat (the other option was chipotle sauce). My problems were with the bread (hard, unappetizing even when soaked with the juices) and the pork itself. There was plenty of it, but the spices were just kind of off. Meh. I'd return for the tacos, but I'll try different fillings. I have the luxury of being a spoiled Southern Californian. We have taco trucks and Mexican street food as far as the eye can see. I visited the awesome city of New York, and have had the best opportunity to eat some of the best food the city has to offer. Sadly, El Rey was not one of them. 2 reasons had me going to this place. 1) I was somewhat homesick, and the street food had me craving for some good Mex. 2) A local asked, "Since you're from LA, is it true that your Mexican food is way better than ours?" With that question...I began to seek the best Mexican food that Yelp could help me find. Don't get me wrong. The food was not God awful. It simply wasn't impressive. I had high expectations for this place, and it fell short. I know what you're thinking...and yes. I am a spoiled and snobbish Los Angeleno...when it comes to Mexican food that is. The flavor of the Al Pastor was "meh" at best. I couldn't even finish it. I am not shy when it comes to devouring food. The Asada and chicken just wasn't as good as it LA counterparts...in terms of flavor and the quality of meat. The people serving us were cool, and the prices were very cheap, but the food just isn't impressive. Sorry. I must admit that I'm a huge snob when it comes to Mexican food. Growing up in NJ I always thought Mex was good. Then I moved to Austin, TX. And I thought Mex was still good - it was not until I returned to the Northeast that I realized what I had been missing and now crave from the state where everything is bigger. That is until I wandered across El Rey del Sabor food cart when perusing Yelp. I was innocently looking for a place to grab a quick lunch around the office - I was a little wary considering I've had a terrible and an alright Mexican meal in the past few weeks, but now the cravings were out of control! I strolled over and ordered a chicken and a steak taco and struck up friendly conversation with the guys working the grill. This gets plus points from me as they were willing to speak Spanish with me although its been years since I've spoken! The beef taco was absolutely amazing. Just enough spice that my mouth was sizzling but I could still finish the whole thing! The chicken taco had a nice light taste that really complimented the mounds of cilantro piled on top. YUM! I had to dock a star because the chicken was a little dry - but that could be because I went at 2, which is pretty late for the lunch rush. The prices are very reasonable: $2 Tacos, $5 Quesadillas with choice of meat, $7 Enchiladas (get the Mole Sause) and an unbelievable good salsa verde that you should get on everything! The salsa verde is tangy and lively and tastes completely home made as does the mole. For $6-7, I can get either a pile of Tacos, 3 enchiladas with rice and beans or a quesadilla and a tamale or empanada. Finding any decent lunch for that kind of money is super tough in midtown, but one this good?! Honestly, I shouldn't be telling more people....but if you are in the area I want these guys to have plenty of business so they don't disappear! Despite the price hike, $2 tacos to $2.5, this remains my favorite lunch spot, period. The tortillas are fresh, the sauce is tangy with a perfect amount of spice and flavor, the meat is juicy... all this from a damn street cart. But I swear, it is better AND more authentic than what $25 can get you at whatever mid-tier, Mexican, wish-they-were-as-good-as-El-Rey, restaurant. This cart is life changing. El Rey's is a typical food cart stationed quietly on the Upper East Side. When I got to the cart, there was no line which was a relief, as I was running late as a result to fuel myself with Mexican goodness. And I did. The tacos ($2.50) were very tasty. I had al pastor and chicken which were both slightly above average. The exact flavor and texture you want from a taco. The spicy sauce definitely added a lot in the flavor department. I will have to try more on the menu to give a richer review, but there is definitely a great lunch to be had at a very reasonable price at this cart! read more

Really wanted to like the tacos at El Rey del Sabor. Unfortunately, the tacos weren't special. The meat (i.e. beef and chicken) were all chopped on into tiny pieces and didn't seem marinated. They ran out of the spicy pork, tongue and steak so maybe those more popular items may taste better. The hot sauce was way too spicy I needed a cold drink (at ING Cafe down the street). This review gives extra props to its authentic TACOS: My coworker drops by here during her trips to Bed Bath & Beyond and picks us up $5 for 2 tacos (chicken, pork or beef). Favorite by far is the chicken & pork with green sauce (a bit of spice). Beef is a little chewy for me. Next time I gotta try it with red sauce! Only downside is that the burritos aren't comparable to Chipotle's fresh and flavorful ingredients. Rather the rice makes the burrito soggy. I have to admit that I don't do a lot of vendor chow. Is it that these "adventurous" type people are more willing to overlook things 'cause it comes out of a cart? Perhaps? While 2.50 for a steak taco (requested cilantro and tomatoes which was good) is an OK price but to add beans and rice (not refried rather standard pinto I suppose) was a further $4. WAY too much $ and rather bland rice with relatively meager bean supply. I'd skip this next time unless they could give me 1/4 the rice and same beans for $2. I threw out 3/4 of the rice which was steamed to clarity which makes it rather bland. This was only 1230 so shouldn't have been part of an "all day" effect. Some of the best food I've had has been from street carts but in south east Asia and India. I tend to avoid them in other countries but my boyfriend insisted we find this cart whilst visiting New York after reading reviews on yelp. We had tacos, one beef and one spicy pork (although I agreed to it being medium not hot as the lady gave me a look to say that I'd not manage the heat!). I could have had it spicier but it was tasty all the same. I preferred the pork whilst my boyfriend preferred the beef. They were much smaller than I imagined and $3 is more than you'd pay at other carts in New York but they were good and the staff were lovely and chatty. read more
