I'll be the first to admit I love a hole in the wall El Rey del taco really live up to its name. I first ordered flautas [crispy corn tortilla rolled and deep fried tacos] and then an Al Pastor taco because I mean, why not. The tacos, wow, I could've probably eaten six more if you put them in front of me. I like that the meat is chopped in small pieces and grilled to perfect without being sloppy yet full. It looks like they make their tortillas fresh in house which you can taste the authenticity and they did something interesting with the onions where they weren't chopped rather sliced and slightly grilled. In addition, the flautas were a little questionable at a glance if your visual eater because the lettuce did have carrots, the cream had a bit of a pink tint, and the chicken wasn't grilled rather finally shredded. Nonetheless, the flavor did not disappoint the flat sauce also came on the bed of lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes, a bit of cheese, and of course, avocado. I ended up ordering an order to go and a Fanta strawberry in a glass bottle. One thing that I can't say is the staff was super friendly and helpful. I had a few questions in the way that they prepared the food and the back staff quickly stepped in to answer all of them and price wise. It's a little pricier, but what restaurant isn't two orders and an extra taco with a drink cost about $40 which consider considering the quality freshness and location. read more

Decided to give this place a chance when I had a chicken enchilada craving. As soon as I walked in, it felt very homey and I could tell it would be authentic Mexican food. The lady was very nice and brought out silverware (which is not typical for most eating establishments in the area). We ordered chorizo & potato flautas, chicken tacos and chicken breast burrito via Grubhub. Delivery was fast and food was fresh. They confirmed our order changes to make sure food was made with any changes we requested. Food was okay. I'm not a fan of the refríes beans and coleslaw kind of salad on top of the flautas. Avocado and coquita cheese was yummy. Pico de gallo was delicious! And elote corn was delicious as well. The food at El Rey del Taco is good when you eat in but every time I get it delivered or I go pick it up, they always mess up the order, they forget to put something on the food that I requested and I make sure and repeat myself 2-3 times just to get me order correct and I do speak Spanish so they can't say they don't understand what I said, don't know who's fault it is, the one taking the order or the one making it and to top it off, besides being charged for the food they add some other bs on your bill, like "Open Food $2.00" what in the hell is open food that costs an extra $2.00? Yes, the spot is a great place to have Mexican food in Union City, NJ. I am not a meat-eater, however, this place has enough on their menu to whip a hearty veggie dish. There are two sides to this location. One side is the order, pick up, and go area. The other side is the dining part. The spot seems a little gritty in the kitchen area but, you can tell they have been there for years. The staff mainly speak Spanish and they have a little trouble with the English language however, they will understand what you want after a few series of questioning. Besides that part, what I will say is if you order to go the portion and food is not the same experience. When you sit down, extra garnishes and appetizers like snacks come to your table, like tortillas and a few different sauces. The portion of the meals is much bigger when you dine in. You have much more food than ordering takeout. Either way, the food is very good here. I have ordered there before I transitioned into a vegetarian and many of the dishes there. It is all very good. Was craving tacos the other night and did a quick yelp search for recommendations which landed me here. Ordered via the yelp app, most of the tacos are about 8.50 for 4, so the prices are reasonable. My pick up order was ready in about 15 minutes. The tacos itself were great, Andrea and I shared the barbacoa and al pastor. The pork meat in both were super tender, and the garnishes of cilantro, onion and lime just made it so much better. The tortillas were very durable and tasty. Really loved the al pastor, sweet and savory with every bite because of the pineapple pieces in it. So good. Be warned the sauces that come along with your orders are very spicy, and I LOVE spicy so it didn't bother me but just a heads up. read more

Solid tacos. I got an order of tacos and they were nice enough to do it half pork half beef. I don't know if that's poor taco etiquette but I wanted to try all the different meats. I thought the pork was better than the beef in case anyone was wondering. The food and the value of your meal are Outstanding. I feel that all the young kids made Tacos mad popular and now you can't get well priced tacos. You can at this place though so keep the place low key. The service could have been better but who cares the food was delicious. There was a certain freshness to my food and it's hard to explain that feeling but it made for a very enjoyable experience. Nothing fancy just tables and chairs. They bring out what I think is home made tortilla chips along with 4 different hot sauces. Ranging from hot to really hot to super hot to hell hot . These may be the best tacos I've had on the east coast. This place is the epitome of "hole in the wall," but what a hidden gem. I've only ordered the al pastor when I've been here and probably will stick to that because it is so good. ~$9 for 4 good sized tacos (I always take home leftovers). Delicious grilled cactus and scallions are served on the side. Before your food comes out they bring out a basket of tortilla chips and the best salsas ever. There are 4 of them and they are all spicy. The mango one is my favorite. There's also a cilantro one, a very thick dark one with a nutty flavor and one that is just fresh chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro and LOTS of hot peppers and seeds. Don't eat these if you can't handle spicy. I've never had a hard time getting a seat on the restaurant side. No alcohol here but you could probably BYOB. Lots of sodas and juices to choose from. Awesome job. Love the use of fresh, simple ingredients at this hole-in-the wall Mexican spot. The four sauces with tortilla chips at the beginning add a nice touch. One of the sauces is guac and they don't charge you extra for it. Surprising--since it's guac. They have a busy of homemade flavored waters which seem interesting, although I've yet to try any. Nice and good local lunch spot. My opinion bring cash to avoid any credit card issues. I would eat here again and would also recommend people to give it a try if you are in the area. I had three flautas which is like a taco with meat inside then fried. I also had a cold Coca Cola to wash it down. There is metered parking so bring quarters (25 cents for 30 minutes). They also give salsa and chip while you wait for your food. There are two sides a sit down and a take out.
