This special restaurant is not on the main streets of San Mateo. A bit hidden behind Safeway off El Camino, you'll find this gem. It's a neighborhood "go to" for authentic Mexican food, fun vibe, great margaritas (a bit pricey but worth it!) and great service! I didn't get it today, but my favorite dish to order and share is the ceviche. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have a nice bar, indoor seating and outdoor seating as well![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Kid friendly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Try this place out. They won't disappoint!

Not bad. I had carne asada, pollo, and el pastor. My favorite probably the el pastor. It was crispy.

First time coming here and had no expectations but I was happily surprised. Every dish was packed with flavor just how I like it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It got pretty busy I kept seeing people coming in and the vibe and energy was fun.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was good, workers seemed happy got checked in on a few times. Definitely want to try their other dishes once my lent is over.

We gathered here last night to celebrate our friends birthday and the margaritas were free flowing and the food was absolutely yummy! My first time there and brought my tacos home my son ate them up and said they were the best he's had in forever! So I will bring my family over soon! Also, the service we had was amazing. I can't remember his name, but he was on point with everything.

I had a bad impression of the burrito. The tortilla was wrapped extremely loose, which made the burrito basically fall apart half way through. The flavor of the meat was good and the beans were good as well but looseness of the tortilla made it difficult to grab hold of without breaking apart. I may try again down the road and hopefully it'll be better.

I want recognize Julio, for his great service and great food here. The presentation here are awesome and over the top. Highly recommend this place. Look for Julio!

Big gaps between rounds made me feel like I wasted a lot of time for the AYCE price. (-1) Their appetizers and "from the wok" section was not impressive. We tried their calamari and their onion rings and both were over-fried. We also tried their garlic noodles and their crab fried rice. The garlic noodles were super watery. My partner did enjoy the crab fried rice and could taste the crab. For the main entrees, we ordered shrimp, snow crabs, and clams, all perfectly cooked! Plump and flavorful. The sauce was pretty thick and garlicky-- 10/10 sauce lol it was almost creamy? Their service was fine. The staff were pretty attentive and they were always asking if we needed anything outside of rounds. (-1) You do have to finish every single piece of seafood in your round before you can request more, and it takes a long time for the next round to arrive. I felt like I waited 10 minutes between each round. If you're the kind of person that likes to maximize your eating time, you might find this super frustrating. This was really my only issue but wouldn't stop me from visiting again and considering à la carte only vs AYCE.

We ordered the ceviche ($21), papas bravas ($11), kale salad ($17), salmon ($35), and seafood pasta ($34). The ceviche was fresh and I really liked the citrusy notes (it was quite tropical and I thought it was possibly passionfruit?). The papas bravas was a decent sized serving and came with an addictive sauce. The kale salad came with a piece of fried feta and the only fault I found with it... was that I wanted more fried feta bits! Salmon was cooked well, and I liked the accompanying veggies - seemed like a very healthy Mediterranean dish. The seafood pasta was also very good. Husband said the fish in his dish was cooked even better than mine. Lastly, they offered us a whole complimentary dessert. We were already beyond stuffed at that point, but who are we to turn down a coconut creme brulee? Another review said they couldn't taste the coconut, but it's definitely there. I would get it again, but if I wanted a paella, I wouldn't come here. But if I was here, I would try the paella. The rice wasn't that flavorful, and I wish there was more meat and not just seafood in the paella. The salmon was a little strange, and they had very large chunks of salmon in there. I didn't think it really fit the vibe of the paella. Also, it was really wet of a paella. The patatas bravas left more to be desired. I thought they were cut too large, so I felt like I was eating potatoes and not patatas bravas. I didn't get the Greek fries, but the waiter walked past with some, and those looked better, so I would probably recommend that instead. It was pretty empty. I came on Friday, July 3rd, holiday day, for dinner, and was able to get seating no problem. They had a few TVs where they were playing the World Cup.

The restaurant was a little more than half full when we had dinner there on a Friday night and the ambiance is lively but not loud. We ordered a variety of dishes and everything was delicious, with very generous portion sizes that left us so full (with leftovers to spare). The ceviches were bright, limey, and tart in the best way, the chicken wings were crispy and juicy, the papa rellena was especially interesting (almost like an inside-out, deep-fried baked potato) with olives and raisins that were a pleasant surprise, and the lomo saltado was as comforting and dependable as it usually is. To top it all off, they even offer Peruvian beers, which was the perfect way to wash everything down. The location is a little bit odd but easy enough to find and park (there is plenty of parking across the main street in front of the BevMo if there isn't any directly in front of the restaurant).

Water poured and menus handed out. A basket of bread to the table. The staff was very patient with us as we had one person who was running late. Pros: * while we waited we started with calamari and yuca fries. * I had a great pisco sour cocktail. * my friends decided to do family style dining - they ordered three items. * I decided to order my own dish as it was my birthday, and didn't feel like sharing. The seafood stew tomato based was excellent. So much seafood - mussels, clams, shrimp, prawns, squid, and a crab leg. Cons: * my friends also ordered the seafood stew tomato based. After a while they asked about it. Lost in translation. Their order never placed with the kitchen. For dessert we got the alfajores. A sandwich cookie with a layer of dulce de leche. It was very sweet. Would have been better with a strong cup of coffee. I also received a complimentary scoop of ice cream in honor of my birthday. There are some parking spaces in front of the restaurant. We circled around the block. Ended up on the same side of the street but about one long block away. The five of us said the food was delicious and we'd like to return.

Always love the option to join the online waitlist ahead of time when reservations aren't available. Favorite dishes of the night were: -Gnocchi Fritto appetizer: Never had fried gnocchi before, had a great puffy texture. Truffle taste in the truffle cream sauce wasn't very strong. -Zucchine e Maiz lasagna: Pesto was a great sauce choice and paired well with the zucchini and corn. -Squid Ink Seafood Pasta (special): Generous seafood portions and the dish was flavorful. -Complimentary focaccia: Fluffy and yummy with olive oil. Other dishes: The Italian Sausage lasagna was fine. I personally love crispy lasagna edges, but some people found it too crisp and too dry. The salad (Insalata di Rucola) wasn't mind blowing, but I'm glad we ordered a veg to cut through the richness and heaviness of three carb-heavy entrees. The restaurant itself is smaller than expected, so I would avoid coming here with large parties. It also felt really hot and stuffy inside, which I anticipate getting worse as summer progresses. The interior is cutely decorated. Service was initially attentive. We did have to flag down our waitress multiple times to order and get the check. Seafood Linguni Special (5/5): If the waiter tells you this is the special today, this is a MUST ORDER! We substituted the squid ink spaghetti with linguini, and it perfectly soaked up the DECADENT SAUCE. Not too salty and perfectly balanced. Complimented the seafood incredibly. I will come back and eat this EVERY TIME. Pesto Gnocchi (4/5): They cook the gnocchi really tender and soft, so don't expect really chewy potato dumplings. I personally like the texture and it absorbed the pesto really well. This had no frills and was simple. Could use some more salt and cheese, but still easily yummy. -1 star because we did find a little piece of white plastic in our Lasagna Bolognese (pictured in this review). I think there were communication issues. there was some mix up with the tables and throughout the night after that our orders kept getting mixed up with not just one but two other tables. So we would see our food from afar being held in front of a group of servers where they would have a conversation over our plates of food for a few minutes then go to other tables, and try to give it to other tables before it finally got to us. The staff explained there was a mixup and due to that all the orders continued getting mixed up during our meal, but there was no acknowledgment otherwise or an attempt to make things right. I think because the group tip is already mandatory, there was no incentive on their end, perhaps. The bus staff are pretty available and responsive but limited in what they were allowed to assist with and the server was hard to flag down. Anyway onto the food. The clams linguine was flavorful. The crab Alfredo pasta had a lot of crab which was a pleasant surprise but a little lacking in flavor and a little on the sweet side with cream and crab notes. Cioppino was better than expected. Oysters were good and an okay price. Key lime pie was decent. I think 3.5-4 stars for the food (probably 4 at the happy hour rates!), 2 for service. Ambiance is a bit weird. Like somewhat upscale with some decor and high ceilings but not in others. Worthwhile to return for happy hour and may update review then!
