I am very disappointed at todays service. I went to order the Thanksgiving dinner as I have in previous years, this year no one spoke English!!! I was trying to ask questions such as what is in the dinner package, what time is pick up...... No one could communicate with me. I even said "let me help you practice English". Finally, I had to put in my order in Spanish, which at that point they were astonished I spoke Spanish. The point is - lets employ bi-lingual folks who have daily customer contact. Review for the Taqueria only: We like to shop here because they have the best store made chorizo around. We got hungry having to wait in the huge line, so we went to their Taqueria, another long line, but this was on a Sunday so...yeah don't go on Sundays. Anyway, I tried to order some crispy tacos, and the lady had a hard time understanding me. She said all we have is chicken..ok, that's fine. She grabs 3 taquitos. I am not going to argue with her as she already has an attitude. My son ordered an al pastor super taco with no onions or cilantro, and she only gave him meat, that's it. When I got my plate, the taquitos were cold and stale, not crunchy. We keep hoping this would be a good place for a fast lunch, but it is not. They now also have a tamale bar, which we didn't try, but they were a reasonable price. We'll come back to try that. read more

Parking lot is always busy and you have to be careful who you park next to. Careful of people not damaging your car. People will ask you for money or if you want to buy their products. Inside the store: produce area is horrendous. Cramped with people and seldom will someone say excuse me. Customers have no manners. Or basic common courtesy. Also, heads up you have to bag your own groceries! Crazy! Even if you have a lot of items the checker just watches you bag and will look impatient if you're taking "long" because she can't scan the next customer in line. Here's an idea girl, help. With 4 or 5 larger Hispanic markets in Salinas El Super is the ugly stepsister. Sitting in the far Northside of town. I'm an older white dude, living in Salinas for 30 yrs. moving freely to any side without worry. Mostly Hispanic clientele (95%) at least and that's never a problem. Service and smiles were mixed, got some half grins and a solid eye roll from one lady customer. It's clean enough but not spotless. Produce looked fresh and stacked up high. My wife and I grab some grub on the way out. One carne asada burrito and one chicken. Both were terrible. The carne asada was tuff and chewy. The chicken was dry and melee, ended up in the garbage. I actually came to buy Pan Dulce. Their Panderia is excellent and prices were surprisingly great. But what caught my attention was the Produce Dept. They had Asian pears and a very fully stocked section. The prices were very good.For under $3 , I was able to buy 3 Asian Pears, 3 Manila Mangos & 5 Kiwi . You can't get that any at any other store !! I did not feel out of place at all as El Super is a Latino themed store. I noticed that I was not the only Asian customer shopping at that time. My roommate went grocery shopping this morning and when she came home she brought a roasted chicken and when she took a bite she noticed it was rotten so she told me taste it and I smelled it and had a foul odor and I said that's rotten. I told her to take it back to the store and get her money back and the lady told her a lot of people has been returning them like that. The lady was nice and helped her out however the store manager or managers need to be more cautious with what the store is selling and if it's not a problem they can fix they need to bring it up to whom needs to fix the issue specially when they know it's not the first time this happens! read more

The butcher area is a joke. You have to take a number to receive service. As I took a numbered ticket I counted the waiting customers- 14. Only 2 butchers were attending us. 23 minutes later our number was called, finally. We ordered our meat from a slow-moving, surly young man who probably felt he was doing us a favor by simply taking our request. Absolutely the WORST counter service of any store I've visited. In the produce section I asked a store employee where I could find fresh herbs. He pretended to not understand the question (I had asked in English) - I then switched to impeccable Spanish). It surprises me that people have the patience for this. They need better management to know when to call all available checkers to the front during known busy times. I been a customer of El Super for quite sometime now I buy Vegetables in boxes and all good . I buy meat and the line is terrible the number there calling is 48 and im 69 and only 3 people helping customers and one of them is the manager. So finally it's my turn after waiting for a long time. I'm buying Chicken and Pork ribs , the ribs i always have it cut 4slice cause it's too big and the manager which is helping out in the front keep on shaking her her saying no and the person helping me out is so confused, they know me as there regular buying the meat almost every week and all of a sudden the way they cut the meat it's changed cause the manager keep on shaking her head and speaking Spanish which I don't understand what is she telling her worker and i keep on saying I'm here all the time and now you change it! She called the store manager and she came and wow i never do like her at all nothing she can do she said well i waited too long as it is and I don't want to argue. It was my first time at this location and I was so disappointed with the meat that I bought, I had to return it back right away. It was a packaged steak, looked really fresh and red from the outside, however, when I got home getting ready to marinate it, it was dark gray on the inside. I took it back and decided maybe I got a bad package so I looked at the rest of them and they were all about to expire the next day. I had to talk to the manager as the cashiers won't let me return the opened package, the manager said "It's not spoiled, it's supposed to be like that!" This place has some incredible deals on produce every week... So good, in fact, that my mom will insist that I take her here all the way from Gilroy just to take advantage of them. The produce at El Super is most frequently incredibly fresh and tasty, especially the ones advertised, which is almost counterintuitive in our society because the bad stuff is usually what is sold at discounted prices. Not here! Wed/Thurs are their produce special days, but there are also week-long deals. Not sure where else you can find cucumber (7lb/$1), pineapple and cantaloupe (3lb/$1), carrots (5lb/$1), tomatoes (3lb/$1), cilantro (7bunches/$1), tomatillos (3lbs/$1), avocado (2/$1), jicama (3lbs/$1)... Pretty dang cheap! They're well-staffed so there's always people out with their carts restocking everything. The shittiest thing about it is that they sometimes do run out of produce, especially if you don't get a chance to shop until later in the evening. Rain checks are offered ONLY if it's they're out and it's the LAST day of the sale. They also offer the usual other items you'd find at a Latino supermarket, including a deli, bakery, and a large carnicería/pescadería. On busy days, you have to grab a number and wait. The meat seems fine, although the deals aren't nearly as mind-blowing as the produce, and the fish area kinda reeks of Air Wick-masked fishiness, but the guys working behind the counter are friendly. It's a huge, huge, clean store... Not sure about the lack of variety as mentioned by another reviewer since they seem to have every possible thing you'd need to whip up a nice Mexican/Latin American meal. El super is one of the best supermarket in town. They have a delicious deli with alot of authentic Mexican food like carnitas and Chile Verde. They also have a tortilla that makes fresh tortillas daily. They have a produce sale on Wednesdays Wich makes the store really crowded. The parking by lot is also small so be aware if you don't like crowds. Overall highly recommended though read more

I love the bakery! That's mostly what I always come in for is to go straight to get me some tres leches cake or some flan. So good! I would have love to give it more stars but the customer service isn't good even in the food department area, they aren't friendly, sometimes they don't even talk or answer you when you ask something. But today I went in and the cashier section was sticky and not that clean and the cashier, Elsy, was handling money and putting on lids with no gloves. And for all of you complaining about long lines: guess what? there's a reason for that, a lot of people like the prices here! Hey, if you like short lines head a mile away to Walmart where they have watermelons for $4.98 each (Oh, El Super is usually 5 lbs for 99 cents). Where Walmart or Safeway have little bins of produce, El Super brings it out on pallets. A lot of turnover, so very fresh.
